Racist depictions of black women have always depicted them as masculine compared to “pure and delicate” white women. Arguments like Mitchell’s were made against de-segregating sports decades ago, and black female athletes face so much disproportionate scrutiny over whether or not they’re really women to this day. Not even just athletes, plenty of conservative types believe Michelle Obama is trans. This issue definitely sits at the intersection of racism and transphobia.
