ADRIEL.
Past Thread Starter for @veraflorosâ
Though swimming had never been one of Adrielâs hobbies, he woke up determined to make it one. He was still quite new to Kaos, and by what he heard and saw from the tourists walking around, the ocean seemed to be the leading site for fun.
Fun was precisely what Adriel needed. It had been years since he had felt as if he could breathe freely, and after having managed to escape to an island where he found a menial job that sustained yet allowed him to remain unseen, life that had always appeared cloudy and grey was beginning to see streams of sunlight and color.
An hour later, he was sitting on a friendly old fishermanâs wooden boat, nervously staring at the bright blue water surrounding him. âYou sure this is safe? No sharks?â
âNothing, nothing!â the fisherman croaked, remaining focused on his rod. Adriel watched the old man reel in his line, disbelief still blatantly written over his face even at the sight of the empty fishing hook. âNothing!â At the old manâs insistence and his personal determination, albeit hesitant, the male stood up and took a deep breath, carefully jumping out into the water.
The moment his body left the boat, every muscle in him froze, and Adriel found himself being greeted with a very salty french-kiss from the ocean. Like a wet cat, he reached up and gripped the side of the boat, desperately clinging on before getting back into the boat without, fortunately, flipping it over.
As usual, Adrielâs mind was running through the most recent traumatic memory he had gone through while he sat at one of Floros Soiâs empty outdoor tables. Though in the process of drying from his âdipâ in the ocean, small puddles of salt water were being formed around him.
âHi,â he said, talking to the young lady who had approached him. It seemed like she worked there. âDo you happen to have anything that gets the taste of salt water out of the mouth?â
AFTER a year in athens, vera easily returned to her routine in kaos. coming back was unlike any other, the warmth of her home and the restaurant being her steady ground. years later, this would be exactly how sheâd feel coming back the second time. and perhaps after even more time, sheâd realize exactly what coming home meant. but in the meantime, she had brought her lessons from athens to the restaurant, delighting herself to create better concoctions for everyone who walked through the doors.Â
and that one particular afternoon, a man had stumbled outside the restaurant soaking to the bone. with her parents in the kitchen, vera had taken the floor to help with the orders when she noticed him. acting in quick alarm, she grabbed a nearby towel before approaching him. âhello.â the smile on her face was of polite warmth. it wasnât her place to question his decisions, and she had lived in kaos long enough to know the beach is one of their most popular spots. in addition, some others preferred to dry themselves with the natural sun. still she had to offer, âwould you like a towel? itâs rather nice out, but it does take some time to dry out in the sun.â it then occurred to her that perhaps he did not enjoy the salt water as much as her other customers did and she added onto her offer. âcould I also get you a cup of tea? coffee, perhaps?âÂ
âhmm...â she pondered over the rather odd, although fairly reasonable, question that he posed. ânot salt water, per se. however to reduce the taste of salt, I would normally add a little acid, or sugar, or dairy. we could get you a dish with that. perhaps a dessert or some soup. maybe even a dip, like tzatziki, which is a.. cucumber yogurt dip and it tastes good with some warm pita.â something vera had had not quite learned yet, and probably wonât for a rather long time, was that she could go on and on about these dishes. part of it was, of course, to help the customer as much as she could. âwe have really good desserts as well, though. baklava, revani, rizogalo, milopita, portokalia me meli... all of these are sweet ones.â
BEAU.â
âWhat do you mean?â Beau asked, still slightly hesitant to dig deeper into what had been going on with Vera. It wasnât like him to pry when it came to these sorts of things anyways. As she continued, he shook his head and held up a hand as if to signal her to stop. âThereâs no need to apologize, Vera. Youâve done nothing wrong.â He began, voice softer than usual. He didnât understand why she felt the need to apologize to him. She had done nothing wrong in his book. If the apology was for their joint arrests, it was a mutually bad decision that he couldnât at all blame her for. The arrest, the potential danger that couldâve come from their night of drunken destruction, it had all been worth it. As long as it was of some help to her during her low point, the rest was water under the bridge. âYou donât owe me any explanations. Nevertheless, if you want to talk or whatever else Iâm all ears. The beach isnât going anywhere. It can wait.â Â
âI want to.â vera shook her head when beau said she didnât have to apologize. âand I really do need to explain. at least a little. I havenât been much of myself these past few months, and after.. well, everything, you deserve that much,â she insisted. if they were the ones who she still had, she was not going to push any of them away further. âeven when you didnât know what had happened, you were just there. so Iâm.. really thankful for that.â and she still wasnât sure how she was going to show just how much she appreciated it, but she definitely wonât stop trying.Â
âI can wait. Iâm not going anywhere either.â there was a small quirk of her lips at this proclamation, something that was a bit more for herself than for him. something that felt like she could do this after all, because kaos was once her home. she can find it again.Â
EVGENIA.
THERE IS SOMETHING DIFFERENT . That much Evgenia can tell- itâs nothing too special, just an attentiveness to things that most would gloss over, sharp eyes with astute judgement. Sheâs on a small break, covering for a sick colleague, mind still half trapped in the German thatâs been her go to language for the day. âGibt es irgendetwas-â Evgenia pauses, before realizing her error. âÎŁÏ ÎłÎœÏΌη,â she shakes her head. âVera, how are you? Hopefully you had a pleasant vacation?â In all honesty, Evgenia shouldâve gone back to Moscow, but sheâll do that over the Orthodox New Year instead. Thereâs too many minefields there for her to avoid (Vienna was frankly no better,) and sometimes it just felt easier to not have to go home.
VERA shook away the apology with a small smile. âIâmâ itâsââ there was a brief shift of her eyes as she put her thoughts together. âmhm.. vienna and berlin was beautiful. I donât travel outside kaos a lot, so that was an interesting experience.â the truth as much as she could tell. âand I hope you had a wonderful vacation as well.â she glanced around at the rather empty section, save the few tourists who chose kaos as their destination for a vacation. perhaps other were just settling down after the beginning of the new year. and she knew she was here to avoid a couple of things, but that made her curious as to what the young brunette had in mind. âwhat are you doing at the museum this time of day, if you donât mind me asking?âÂ
FLORIAN.
florian didnât like to pry. after bailing vera and beau out in vienna, he didnât ask any questions. it didnât surprise him coming from beau. but vera? all he could do was ask her kindly to be safe, to take care of herself, and remind her, one more time, that he is there for her. always. and if thereâs something else to say on the issue, heâll patiently wait for vera to come around. he wonât pressure her. so he sighs and smiles when he finally sees her at his door.
âplease, come on in,â he says, calm and kind, like the older brother he is. âwe can eat in the dinning room or the terrace, wherever you feel more comfortable.â heâs not about to make this harder for her than it already is.
A quick nod of her head and vera hurried inside, almost as if afraid he was going to change his mind. but flo, one of her closest friends after all these years, was so patient and considerate, it made her feel slightly worse. she wasnât going to run though, not anymore. she was just going to have to suck it up. âoh, it doesnât matter to me. itâs your house, whichever one you choose will be fine.â the last thing she wanted to do was impose, she had done enough damage as is. âor if youâre not even hungry, we donât have to have them. I shouldâve asked before, or called. Iâm sorry, I didnât even think about thatâ if you had something else to do.â
ADELINA.â
It was never Adelinaâs intent to make Vera cry, especially not in the middle of a busy restaurant, but she had to say what was on her mind. She reached across the table, grabbing Veraâs hand with her own and running her thumb over it. âI know itâs not easy, sweetpea, losing someone never is, but we can get through this together. Youâre not alone and as long as Iâm still kicking, you will always have me.â
She sighed, using her free hand to wipe away a tear rolling down her cheek. Years ago in November, she lost a child and found out she was unable to have children of her own. A few Decembers later, her mother passed away. No matter how long had past, she still had a difficult time during the winter holidays. And now, helping Vera through the loss of her mother, Addy was taken back to all of those times and was hurting.Â
âItâs hard when our routines are broken, especially when it happens in such a difficult way, but you are so strong and you can get through this. It may not seem like it now, it might seem hopeless, but you got this. I promise you.â
VERA took a moment to close her eyes, to not let the tears fall, because this wasnât how this was supposed to go. she was supposed to put on a smile that didnât quite reach her eyes, and talk about the beauty of vienna and berlin, and swallow the meal without thinking any more of it, and maybe swipe in a drink or two. she was supposed to be o k a y. which was really much more difficult than it seems. âI feel alone,â she admitted. never out loud before, but it was in the air before she could stop it. the weight of her admission laid heavy, and she wanted to take it back.Â
âI donât know if I could be strong enough for this. Iâve already... I avoided so many people, and pushed away others.â she winced at the memory of that. how much she probably hurt them and how much they didnât deserve that. âtheyâre probably much better off without me,â it hurt to say that too. the idea of losing those who she held close to her. âI tried to do what my parents did, you know. give people the feeling of home. but I just donât know what home is anymore.â
BEAU.â
As much as he enjoyed his time in Vienna and Berlin over the holidays, Beau was happy to be back on Kaos. For one, the weather on the island was one hell of a lot more tolerable, and it held one of his favorite places in the world; the black pebble beach. Visiting the awe inspiring place had become a part of his daily routine. Truth be told he could just sit on the beach and admire the water all day, and sometimes he did. The swimmer was just on his way there when he heard a sudden knock on the door. Too lazy to check the front door camera of the Agreste estate, he swung the door open in one swift motion. âVera?â His brows furrowed in confusion at the sight of her. He hadnât been expecting her visit today. The two had been spending a lot of time together over the last few months, getting into mischief amongst other things to help her deal through her rough patch. Thus, he just assumed that maybe she had come over because she needed another distraction. âHey, is everything alright? Did you want to hang out or something? I was on my way to the beach if you want to come with?â
THE barrage of questions made her falter slightly, and she quickly clarified, âyeah, everything is alright.â not quite yet. âwell, I mean- itâs... it will be, I think. I hope. anyway..â vera tucked a hair behind her ear to regain her focus and stop the meandering. âI wanted to talk. explain.. and apologize. but if youâre busy, I can come back at a better time. I donât want to take you away from the beach.â she felt like- or in fact, she had taken too much of his time already. all in less than a year of them knowing each other too. and she was grateful for him, that he so easily accepted her wish to forget. it may not be the best way to deal with a loss, but just in those moments she had felt a little less terrible. sheâd be lying if she said she didnât have a bit of fun. before it went south, of course, and that was probably where she felt she could have done better. not used to being so reckless as to get caught, they had definitely leaned towards the dangerous side. she was only so lucky that neither of them had gotten seriously hurt or else everything might have been worse.
