i think completely pre transition trans people should be able to wear one tiny little pronoun pin and get gendered correctly every time. i think cis people should be transitioning just for the fun of it if they want to. i think you should be able to walk into any pharmacy and just buy hrt. i think that little boys should be able to sit in circles and play with dolls and paint each other's nails and make friendship bracelets. i think that little girls should be able to play with flaming monster trucks and play football and get competitive over video games. i think that arson (he/it/paw) should have paw's identity respected and treated as completely normal. i think that we should normalize neopronouns and weird genders and being weird or unusual in general. you should be able to explain your weird one of a kind xenogender to the least queer person on the planet and they should say "oh that's cool!! haven't heard of that gender before". you should be able to wear a tail in public you should be able to make out with your computer if you want i don't fucking care. i love transgenders i love neurodivergent people i love furries i love everyone outside the norm i love freaks i love nerds i love everyone.

this post has a message that is overall true and is something that a lot of autistic people (which i’m assuming is the target audience since op uses the term infodumping specifically) could benefit from learning; that conversation is a two-way street and letting other people get a word in, and showing interest in their perspectives is helpful for social interaction.

however, i can’t get over how incredibly condescending, judgmental, and ableist the phrasing is, and — espcially considering the wording does read as if it specifically is aimed at autistic people who quite literally cannot help how their social cognition naturally functions — how that is completely unhelpful to fucking everyone. calling a behaviour that is literally inherent to many autistic people’s autistic traits “verbal masturbation” is disgusting bully behaviour, actually. not to mention that it reinforces extremly outdated psychiatric understandings of what autism fundamentally is (i.e. a disorder of extreme solipsism).

i also think that they’re approaching this from an incredibly bad faith angle in general, because it actually isn’t true that people’s bad reactions to autistic socialization is always just because we’re such useless worthless egocentric disableds who don’t care about anyone else. it’s actually very, very often because people are ableist and it doesn’t matter how much we try our best to engage in “normal” conversation because we’re perceived as fucking freaks. hope that helps.

it's so alienating to see a take like the OOP and i hope their autistic friends leave them promptly, if they haven't already. many friendships thrive for years on mutual infodumping. mature people - including autistic people - can tell their friends "hey can we stop" if it goes on too long. like i mean this genuinely but if people are reading this and think "oh gd i need to stop talking about my special interests so people will like me" NO. find people who care enough to listen.

this is such a great addition that points out some things that i decided to not address in my post because i didn’t want to make it about my specific personal experiences but it’s so important to remember that if you’re autistic and you are prone to infodumping that you deserve friends who appreciate you for it and who can also just let you know if it does get too much at times!

personally i have never had the ability to mask more than just enough to get by in very short and predictable interactions, and so i still struggle immensely to interact with new people because i just don’t get what i’m supposed to do in any given situation, and trying to reason my way to the right action is very mentally draining. for many years i barely ever spoke unless i absolutely had to because i was so scared of being ridiculed or ignored etc., and i couldn’t mask in a way that mattered. i know that this kind of social conditioning is so common among autistics, and the fact that i’m still seeing so many posts like the one above that essentially come down to mask or perish really grates on my mind all the fucking time.
