I forget if I showed the beautiful Tyrian purple that they made in the synthesis chemistry lab that I collaborated with at the art museum. They’ve been synthesizing mostly blue pigments and dyes from throughout history. This was my first time seeing Tyrian purple in person and I was so excited!

Historically it was made from murex snails and was hugely expensive and used by royalty, but chemically it’s similar to indigo so the class was able to create it in the lab without snails.

Finally pulling apart this antique theatre chair so I can reupholster it. I am planning on replacing the batting and fabric, while retaining the springs.

Had to take a little break lol because SOMEONE decided it was nap time.

The bottom cushion is unsurprisingly a mess. Several springs broken. Luckily, this chair is mainly for the cats and they won't care.

And yes, that is straw. Very common. There's also more upholstery batting, and that gridded sheet is some kind of backed cardboard.

One of the things I love about picking apart old furniture and bags is seeing how scrap is used. See this piece of vinyl used upside down to cover the springs before the batting & straw got laid on top. There is a similar piece of green vinyl layered in the top cushion.

Almost forgot about the piping. Paper core here in the original. I may just buy some piping because I hate making it. 😅

Also, the piping is probably what the original fabric looked like. (You can tell the chair has been recovered at least once.)

New fabric has been rough cut. Waiting for a few supplies to arrive before I can continue.

Well, that looks a helluva lot better than when I picked up this chair.

I might have put the bottom on backwards, but there were also double drilled holes in the metal base, so I actually think the upholstery person before me screwed up. 😅

Upholstery isn't as intimidating as I thought, but it also is tricky to get super clean, so props to the pros. Probably shouldn't have gone with a pattern for my first project, but this fabric stopped me in my tracks at the store.
