“I always wanted to be a saint but I thought I’d be one of the miserable ones sainted by pain burnt alive inside”
— Calling a Wolf a Wolf, ‘I Won’t Lie This Plague of Gratitude’ by Kaveh Akbar
sasha is greyromantic, what that means for him is that he’ll fuck anything that moves but is uninterested in anything more. alesya was his partner & i wouldn’t classify them as romantic, but they were important to each other. post-resurrection they’re technically still married, but remain separated. she’s busy with her work & uninterested in maintaining his appetite & he’s too intimidated by her to find her attractive.
when sasha buys out roxxon & moves into his manhattan office he’s at the peak of his power. he’s got major political connections at this point despite the correct suspicion the government has that he’s collaborating with foreign powers & evidence of his associations with the city bratva. but he’s got really good lawyers & a lobbying firm at his disposal. he’s on the cover of time, forbes & gq. he’s invited to the met gala that year after his spread in gq gets anna’s attention, but the most blatant flex of his wealth & power comes when his company aquires rockywater, a water bottling subsidiary that earns kronas corp enough money for sasha to purchase the new york bulletin which published three critical pieces about kronas in the year previous, effectively shutting down the biggest critics of himself to date.
there isn’t a clear, identifiable emotion within him, except for greed &, possibly, total disgust.

the snow crunch beneath boot sole & the crack of steel wreathes his brother’s entry into the wood behind the house. the axe-bit finds its bed in a log & sasha stoops down to catch the handle of his tea cup between thumb & forefinger in a moment’s respite. [ the breadth of his brother’s shoulders haven’t dwindled from the pinhole light of childhood memory, but his soft edges have sharpened with the clarity of adulthood. ] when he looks at his brother he sees houses burning, his soul bleeding out warmth into the air around him with the cloying sweetness of grave-rot & the copper threads in his hair catching fire in the sunlight. when he looks at his brother he sees fragility, a vulnerability that needs to be clawed out from the heart.
again, the swing of his axe cleaves wood & thought in twine. the bite of the handle clenched in his fist feels enough like the skull of his brother to tamp the battery-acid sting in his throat & brimming violence in the ride of his tongue.
he tilts his head in reference to the warm glow of the kitchen where the shadows of their wives reside, diving into inanity to avoid landmines. « aleysa’s a good wife. she’ll teach natalya well. »

[ on the left: ] lyusya was named after the n*zi killer lyudmila pavlichenko, she takes after her father in looks & her mother in temperament. she’s aleksandr's much doted upon youngest daughter. [ on the right: ] vasilisa takes after her mother in looks, but finds comfort in serenity & the rebellion of a good book. she’s too cunning for her own good. she’s aleksandr’s eldest daughter.
(…) I am graceless. No. Worse than that.
