In this regeneration project I have learnt many things especially more digital skills learning more on photoshop and learning how illustrator works to do drawing and also to make a pattern, This will be useful in the future if I cant find a print I want and have to make it on my own and also learnt to use other equipment for illustrator and was interesting figuring and learning for myself as it was a big part of my project, it was quite difficult with the digital things as it isnt my strongest point however it was in the end the one of the best outcome, I also learnt to natural dye and to make the fabric the change shape with a steamer and I was extremely interested in the digital things as it was quite difficult and it was good to challenge myself.
I discovered more about sustainability and the fashion industry there are lots of things that aren’t sustainable in the fashion industry such as the fabric waste and even the workers. This also leads to harming the environment and with the fabric left in the land and the massive factories letting out toxic fumes. It doesn’t just stop with the environmental things also it also things that happen in the industry that harms animals like animal testing however more and more companies have stopped and made it more animal friendly. The industries make a positive outcome is that they upcycle left over fabric and use it to make more sustainable clothing so no fabric goes to waste or use digital printing or screen printing as it uses most of the ink and helps the environment. There are also more eco friendly techniques such as patchwork, natural dying, shibori, weaving and digital prints.
The artists that have inspired my artists the most are Sandre Meech as she relates her work to climate change which relates to our theme regeneration and making out outcome more eco friendly and Sandre does that as she relates her work to climate change and is very unique, not an artist however still make art are the Marine Debris art as even-though they aren’t exactly artists themselves they help others collect plastic debris from the ocean and make it into art and help others get a better understanding and educating people in the damage plastic debris and netting have on the sea life and ocean as the ocean is really important to the planet and helps with the climate change and sea level rising, they have made me have a better understanding on the ocean and also inspired me to used plastic in my work had I did. Monica guilera also influenced me in this project as she uses natural resources for her weaving and creates baskets which are eco friendly, helping me understanding that I can weave with many things not just wool. They all helped me get a better understanding on different eco friendly art and designs for more sustainable work.
I chose to focus more on interior as I had prior to this project did fashion and had used my strongest techniques such as embroidery and Lino print and I wanted to go outside my box a little as I wanted to try something new to further my skills however I still used my strong points such as embroidery. I chose to apply sustainable eco friendly techniques in more such was ding, digital printing and heat pressing used plastic items and weaving. This was very successful as my stitching in the pillows was one of them best that I have done and as I had done a pillow in the past it turned out really well, with the second pillow I added lots of different techniques in one pillow I used heat pressing used plastic netting that oranges and lemons come in and also heat pressed it on the pillow and also dyed my own fabric and then hand embroidered fishes on the pillow to match my theme. This is sustainable as I’m not buying new fabric and only using fabric that’s been left over or using things that have been used already.
I would see my pillows in a all around home store such as dunelm or Homebase as my first pillow that I made with my digital print looks like it could be in a little boys room as it isn’t too obvious what the print is about it just covers the whales and fishes and with some red bits in it so it would be easily sold in any store and is sustainable as it’s digital printed and I made the fabric design myself. I had decided to keep the photoshoot basic and just took pictures with a stand and a chair and put the pillows together in the chair and the photos turned out really well and all three of my outcomes really match well together, and together shows what I wanted to show and the problems with overfishing as the embriodery of the fish over the heat pressed nets shows the netting.
I would have researched more if I had more time into the problems of fashion sustainability and used more sustainable fabrics that could be biodegrable however that would be more expensive so it held that I dyed my own fabric. I faced a lot of challenges with the stitching not being straight and me having to unpick it and restiched it. The worst outcome was the lamp as I had to redo the design lots because the weaving didn’t fit right in the lamp so I had to change the design of the original lamp, adjusting the design to the time and adding the fabric that I had left over so I didn’t have to used new fabric and waste the fabric that I could use to make it more sustainable.
Overall my outcome was really successful as my outcome was more detailed and refined than I thought it would turn out like and the photoshoot really showed the outcomes really well. This project didn’t seem too interesting at first however with some research and some finalising with the designs this has been the strongest outcome and my favourite outcome and it really shows the troubles with overfishing in a sustainable way. I could have improved with time management as I didn’t have time to research last minutes and get a better understanding of the troubles and if I had managed to research before I made my final piece I could have added more details in my pillows. This furthered my skills with embroidery and it’s my strongest skill I now think and have gotten better with my straight stitching.
