I really love crochet because I can make a square like this:
and repeat the steps a few more times to make this:
I wrote up a pattern for this and it's available on my blog and etsy shop.

Haven't done much crafting lately because I've been spending a large amount of time spying on the birds hanging around outside my home. (Birdwatching: the ultimate productivity killer.)
I think these are baby brown thrashers; there was an adult bird hopping around and feeding them but I couldn't get a clear picture.
Northern mockingbird!
This little guy was caught opening the bird feeder so all the seed falls out on the ground
C2C Braided Puff stitch coming soon...ish

Planning on framing all these butterflies and this was the first attempt. I haven't hung it up yet because I don't have the right beads to sew in the rings of the upper wings like the pattern suggested.

I ended up not working in the back loops for the upper wings. Shaping the wings by adjusting the cord was a little tricky but I think it worked out well enough.
This series of tutorials was so useful:

The instructions were to crochet in one piece but I ended up making the top and bottom wing sections separately, then joining them together.
