Ronald Gonzalez, “The Mortifacts of Memory.”

Currently virtually on view at Jonathan LeVine Projects is artist Ronald Gonzalez solo exhibition, “The Mortifacts of Memory.”

From the Golem myth of the 16th Century to Frankenstein, the darkest fantasies of industrialism and the machine age, through 2001’s Hal and a litany of dystopian science fiction, culture has long charted an uneasy relationship to the humanness of the manmade. Ronald Gonzalez’s welded metal figurations—created from found objects, leather, wire, wax, carbon and screws, over steel armatures—are descendants of this dread and fantastical realm. From the scrapheap accumulations of a society that seemingly discards far more than it uses Gonzalez’s sculptures are born from the wreckage of our perpetual consumption and spirited to life by hand, imagination and vision.

Child of the post-war factory system, Gonzalez is an explorer of the margins and voice of the marginalized whose art represents the very best of our ingenuity and the gradual dissolution of the American Dream. With pathos and nobility, Ronald Gonzalez’s anthropomorphisms remind us that the found object was never intended as an aesthetic destination so much as a stop along the way in the search for meaning.
