With a career spanning nearly seven decades, Betye Saar (b. 1926) is one of the most celebrated assemblage artists and a pioneer of both politicized African American art and feminist art. Her work is still cutting-edge in that she never fails to capture the timbre of the times. Her exploration of current racial and feminist issues using a powerful visual lexicon incites a (much needed) sense of urgency. Saarâs construct of a distinctive artistic vocabulary provides her with inexhaustible resources for creating visual meaning. She employs birdcages (symbolizing confinement) and ships (symbolizing slave trade) to investigate the different dimensions of social and spiritual captivity. Her assemblages also include dolls, domestic utensils and hair to reference femininity, and cigarette cases and pipes to imply masculinity. I could write so much more about Saarâs work. Iâll just close with that as a silversmith, I was pleased to learn she also enameled jewelry under the moniker Brown & Tann. Iâm still looking for extant examples. Saar is a changer and a maker; a mover and a shaker. We socially distanced at the park tonight. I needed nature and some fresh air. It was glorious: the whipping wind, chirping birds, gurgling brook, frogs, all of it glorious. https://www.instagram.com/p/B-vgeazJ3PN/?igshid=5trciygte0xo

Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, TX. I thought a lot about temporality (if you make your mark, it WILL be covered up) vs. permanence (upended Cadillacs stuck in the ground) and community vs. anonymity - while youâre there with others, there is little to no interaction...what is normally considered illegal is encouraged, but no one manages to make eye contact...youâre upended like the Cadillacs. https://www.instagram.com/p/B9f9umGpjtb/?igshid=1ejxxtkl591cj
