Oh, there was this little gremlin. Certainly didn't smell like a typical Digimon. That meant it was one of those subspecies. At least the little guy lead with a compliment.

"Both." He answers flatly. "The eyes work when the mask is on, and not when it's off. The eyes without it are a little fucky thanks to some messy data."

Astamon leans down forwards at the bear bearing critter. Admittedly, it was kind of cute. Not quite cute enough to not stab if it annoyed him enough.

"The ears work just fine though, Coinpurse."

Headcanon Time [Accepting]

Astamon grew up like most typical Digimon: hatch, and try to survive. The Dark Area was not the best place to start living but when you are a little Dracmon just trying to get by, you make sure you get by. There were strength in numbers and kindness was an abused idea, but Astamon eventually got enough data to stabilize as a Sangloupmon and become a pack leader for awhile. He left after becoming Matadormon and no longer fitting in with the necessary survival skills.

When things began to get scarce in terms of resources, Matadormon resorted to vampirism to one, get rid of the competition, and two, let resources start to replenish and eventually balance everything out. Everything was about survival. Those that showed Matadormon respect at the time were given mercy. That's where he started to get followers and essentially start a reign of vampire Digimon. Thanks to that, he became GranDracmon and started to look into why there was such a problem with everything in the Dark Area, and that's where the bane for the God Programs began.

After surviving the first Reboot of the Digital World is when the then Sangloupmon started to get confused about how in the God's code did he even survive. It was the first instance of the X-Antibody. Astamon still has it to this day, and out of pure spite knew that his existence was always meant to spite the higher power, if not tear it right down.

... Somehow he did remember... Noel is like that too, right? A digimon who had survived an entire reality being erased, witnessing people and digimon forgetting his existence... But unlike this big wolf digimon, Arsenemon became an antiheroic thief stealing stuff unfairly obtained by the digimon and the Digital World (plus Chosen Children), or taking away anything that would go against the wishes of the digimon and the Chosen Children as well.

An erratic master of the illusions, an elusive magician warrior type too.

"Um, but this implies--"

"I don't like that either... The digimon shouldn't be forced to keep an eternal fight like this...!"

Even so, even if Rui had understood the role of a Digimon Partner... He wasn't fond of that. And his role as Chosen Child just bothered him. Ironically, he is the very first... (or so he believed, because Ukkomon told him so... a long time ago) But he does wanted to know why would things be like that. Why would the entities of the Digital World would simply choose humans for that.

"The more I hear about that... The less I enjoy this. Why can't we just... coexist?"

He didn't mean the Chosen Children as a group. He meant digimon and humans living together instead.

Astamon doesn't answer right away but he does nod. "Yeah, lost some mons that just wanted a quiet place to stay. The Dark Area already isn't a kind spot. It's been a very long time."

Looked like it was time to offer the great wisdom of some old evil guy who was tired of the bullshit. Tired of the God Programs nonsense. Astamon stretches a bit and then sits next to the human and his Digimon.

"There is always gonna be fighting. Just the truth of either world. I lost a lot of mons from back in the day, but when I figured out how to get to the Human World, I'd just scoop em out of there when a reboot happened, and then put 'em back in my big ol safe space. It really pisses them off."

He smiles at his own spite. An infinite fuel source if you asked him.

"Thing is kid, you have all the potential in the world. You can help make that coexistence happen. You don't have the same rules as the Digital World here. That's why I like it here. Eventually the God Programs gotta change if I don't change 'em. My existence is purely to spite them. You don't have to be a victim of the narrative. The real evil is rolling over and just taking it. Trust me, I'd know."

The big bad villain giving the hero a pep talk? More likely than you think.

Mun question: opinion on fan-made Digimon?

My opinion on this subject should not matter. Do what brings you joy! Digimon is a series of 'here are some rules but do whatever the fuck you want' so embrace that. People make fan stuff all the time, don't let one person's opinion stop you if it brings you good brain juice. That shit in in short supply these days.

He quite got some guilt feeling about this. Not his fault, for sure, but he could sense what it is about... wanting to not take part of some 'greater entity' plot... Knowing so little about the digimon or those other how-many-people-with-digimon-do-exist-at-this-point makes Rui an easy to get influenced by others narratives.

Naivety perhaps? Or just... a tired human not wanting this doomed fate to continue rolling? He had made his decision, after all.

"I see... You don't like to keep this fight lasting forever..."

He sighed, "So do I. I'm not exactly... like them and I suppose I do not exactly have a place to belong. I'm just... myself."

Ukkomon silently look at Rui, frowning.

"So you can change forms without a human being's influence?" Rui asked, "Like some other digimon I've met before...?"

"Yeah, I just want the current ones in charge gone. They're shit, the reboots are fucking bullshit, and I haven't changed my mind since day one. The fact you don't get to stay with your Digimon friends after is also bullshit."

Well, talking out the big bad guy's backstory with a stray kid on the street was not what Astamon planned on doing today. Ah well, something about him and strays seemed to keep happening.

"Do I like to fight? Kind of in my nature. Do I like to see higher powers enlist children that aren't involved to fight their battles for them when they don't get their way? Absolutely-fucking-not."

He was a bastard, but he was a bastard with standards.

As for the evolution question, Astamon only smiles. Unfortunately it comes off as eerie. Not entirely his fault.

"Yeah. Eventually any Digimon can. It's all about collecting data and potential. I've been around for a long ass time. By your human standards, centuries of time. A long time to collect power and data and reinvent myself. Old code still says I can change back into my old selves. Human catalysts rapidly accelerate the process. Your bonds are special like that."

"A necessary evil...?"

Is this about something about good vs bad he heard so many times as a kid, but also from Daisuke and the others' stories...? About balance between forces?

"..."

Even if his mind is skewed enough, but could understand that. There's no 100% good or 100% evil being. Or else you could consider Ichijouji Ken, Ukkomon, Noel and other people & digimon he had met some kind of evil-doers because of their sins. And, especially himself because... well, you know.

"Trying to... rebrand?" that caught his curiosity though, "Why? Is it the other vampires giving a bad name to their own species?"

Ah right. Well not like it was gonna hurt the kid any if he knew The Story. A quick flick of the blade and it goes back in it's pocket. He leans on whatever wall is most convenient.

"You aren't the first Chosen Children and you apparently won't be the last. See, the big ol God Programs the run the Digital World? I loathe them with every literal bit of my existence. I'll admit I've killed a few of you before I knew what a human even was. When I did, it made me hate them even more."

He huffs, feeling his hair bristle on the back of his neck. "I was one of their biggest threats, and when the world reboots didn't get rid of me, they sent your kind. Some of them beat me, some didn't. I got really tired of being the villain to their convenient narrative. Sick of seeing you kids get used as 'destiny's little soldiers' who had their bonded friends through all that trauma get ripped away and put back like nothing ever fucking happened."

"Still, can't take the kind vampire out of the mon, even if you change what Digimon you're most comfortable with. So Myotismon likes to try and 'take my throne' or whatever. I'll still put on the big bad GranDracmon suit if I have to."

He idly twirls his dagger around with a flourish.

He pauses a bit.

"I'm also still a vampire and in charge of all of them no matter how much I try to rebrand."
