a series of unfortunate events is SO good because it gets that the world is terrible and cruel and bad things happen to good people for no reason and grown ups don’t listen when they should and even the Good Guys turn out in shades of grey BUT at the heart of it is so much love and warmth and Violet, Klaus, and Sunny WILL find allies and they WILL create a home for themselves even in the most dire circumstances because they will ALWAYS have each other to hold on to. I will love you even as the world goes on in it’s wicked way!!
The tragedy mingled with hope is what keeps me coming back to asoue and to the adults specifically
i KNOW how this story ends but I keep coming back hoping it’ll be different while knowing it can’t be. The adults have to die. The children have to struggle. There has to be hope anyway
It can’t change because the books are already published but I’m talking narratively speaking, it also cannot change. The adults have to die. The children have to struggle. There has to be hope anyway!
[the story of three siblings at least one of whom is dead] [i feel lemony as if we are drifting away from one another] [i hope you are able to return home someday brother] [my brother asked the question once and had nightmares about it for weeks] [my dear sister if you are reading this i am still alive and heading north to try and find you] [meet me at the hotel try to get us a room without ugly curtains] [i haven’t seen either of my brothers for years] [my brother used to say that if only one had a little more time to do some important reading all the secrets in the world would become clear] [give jacques my regards] [she’s not just your associate snicket she’s your sister] [we snickets take care of our own] [i was afraid i would shout my sister’s name] [in my dream my sister was showing me a compass] [i thought of kellar’s sister then and my own] [i abandoned my sister in a train station] [it was the sort of mechanism my sister would have admired] [my sister is very brave and very resourceful] [we called the game beethoven and my sister refused to play because she thought it was inane] [it was something my sister used to do to me when i was very young to show me she was listening] [i miss you and i miss my brother and i miss my parents] [dear kit i wish you were here]
i’m not sure it was entirely intentional, but i really like the idea that count olaf was a kid who brushed up against vfd’s academic elitism and couldn’t hack it for reasons that aren’t his fault, possibly a learning disability, but had already been in the vfd system and as such couldn’t see another path than opposition to everything vfd stands for, which involved worse and worse actions until he became this bitter, broken man

Concept art by Peter Chan.
Olaf's backyard. I like this depiction of it as sprawling, with what looks like a dilapidated gazebo to the side, leading up to an overgrown outdoor stage.
thinking abt count olaf quoting poetry before he dies n how much that means especially going against the idea that vfd=good because they know literature n how much more messy it is
met lemony snicket yesterday n the only question i panicked to think of was abt writing vfd n ambiguous morality. tumblr user vfdschism lives up to his name
baptised with a molotov cocktail at the evil villain convention (prank gone wrong)
They tried to pull the weapon out of Olaf's hands, but their first guardian did not let go, and for a long moment the youngsters and the adult were gathered around the terrible weapon in silence. Violet stared at the hooked tip of one harpoon that was pressed against her chest. Klaus stared straight ahead at the bright red trigger than could press at any moment and Sunny stared into Olaf's shiny, shiny eyes for even the smallest sign of nobility.
"What else can I do?" the villain asked.
the baudelaires get to prufrock prep and there is a mountain of mail waiting for them because this is the first time a place with a known mailing address has been mentioned in the daily punctilio and the people they knew before have a lot to say
some of it is frantic questions from classmates they barely knew, people who saw violet and klaus in the halls one day and their burned-down house on the front page the next. people who say “i know those kids from the paper!” but don’t, really.
but most of it is from people they do know. neighbours and teachers who are worried. friends who want to know why they disappeared, why they never called to tell them they were alright. in the bad beginning lemony says that most of their friends had stopped writing and calling, let them fall by the wayside, but i refuse to believe that to be true. it’s just that no one could find them. if anyone forgot about their friends, it was the baudelaires themselves, too busy reeling from blow after blow to remember what it was like before. it’s only months after the fact, when they’re falling down an elevator shaft that violet remembers a gift from a friend what feels like a lifetime ago.
beatrice and bertrand left vfd, and they never wanted their children to know that life, to live in all the secrecy and isolation. they had dinner parties often, and went to the theatre and went on day trips and their kids had friends. their kids grew up to know people and to trust them until it all went wrong.
people miss them. they aren’t just a story in the papers. people want to know that they’re okay
Storyboard-ish work of the intro and various scenes from The Penultimate Peril. Mostly worked on the composition but tried to give a bit of mood too. Do you recognize these scenes? . (Little scene names : Intro, Car chase, The Trap, Reception, The Cupboard, The Beginning, The End, The Trial, Suspicious)
“I have nightmares too, orphans. I wake up in the night screaming and the only things that comforts me is knowing that the three of you will soon be sceaming as well.”
