Violet was settled in her car outside of her grandmother’s house. Her mother was in town for a few weeks and before Violet’s flight later that day she wanted to run a few errands with her favorite lady. As she waited for the woman to come out, Violet double checked her to-do list. Once she crossed out a few things, her attention went to her mother — the woman opening the car door abruptly. The reunion for the two was full of bright smiles and several embraces before Violet pulled off and headed to the nearest mall.

Recently, I emailed you guys a reading on the sociological imagination. Using that as your foundation, I want you guys to explore how the society’s perspective has affected you. As we should all know, society’s factors, norms and institutions are the most impacting on populations and the individual.

So, you are going to use the sociological perspective to examine you own life, and to write a one page essay, or visual representation examining the three greatest societal influences on your life. 

Here are some societal factors as suggestions (you may use others):

government

religion

economy

family (close family and/or extended family)

friends

education

culture

organized extracurricular activities (football, band, dance, gymnastics, basketball, etc.)

neighborhood

work (volunteer work, job, un-paid responsibilities)

A lot of our media isn’t placed in reality, which can lead to confusion about psychological disorders. So over the break I want you to select one of the following films and review the film as a Psychology student, not just a movie-watcher.

You must provide a brief summary of the selected movie and discuss it from a psychological viewpoint. You should name the mental illness depicted in the film, give your opinion on why it was accurate or why it is flawed and submit this before the 31st.  No sources are required.

With this class there are a few concepts that we will go over and discuss, such as: free will and determinism, evil and the existence of God, personal identity, ethical values politics and more. I want to start off small however. 

Over the break I want you to think over the following questions. However, I want you to only respond to two of the following questions with either a visual representation or a few sentences. 

This assignment is due by the 31st. 

Do you have memories that make you feel a certain way?

Can you have a memory that makes you happy?

What is happiness?

Can you be happy but feel sad?

Can you feel sad but be happy?

Can you be happy and sad at the same time?

As the hour came to an end Violet walked on to the campus and went straight to her classroom to prepare for homeroom. It took her a few minutes to set out her papers, stock up her snacks and write out her objectives on her white board before propping her door open for the students to enter.
