Life Magazine didn’t seem to pay much attention to President Roosevelt’s November 24, 1941 decree that Thanksgiving should be held on in the fourth Thursday in November.  Its November 1941 issue focused on other things, like knitting instructions, the lives of college coeds, life in Portland, ME during the war, and it also ran these images from a recent U.S. Camera and British-American Ambulance Corps “V for Victory” photo contest. Life lamented the U.S.’ commercialization of the “V for Victory” symbol while lauding the BBC’s use of three dots and a dash (Morse Code) to introduce its daily short wave broadcasts as well as reports that “almost every French home along the river Loire is marked with a hopeful V.”

The Great Operas: The Romantic Legends Upon Which the Masters of Song Have Founded their Famous Lyrical Compositions is an enormous, five-volume set edited by James W. Buel that provides synopses of the greatest operas ever written, along with biographical sketches of the composers and beautiful copperplate illustrations. The work was endorsed by celebrated opera composer Giuseppe Verdi. 

So, before your next big night out, come to Special Collections and read the synopsis of your chosen opera. You can find it in the catalog here

Contrary to popular opinion, the majority of operas are not about Vikings and Germanic peoples in horned helmets. (Wagner just took that theme and ran with it across four different operas.)
