Happy Thanksgiving!
Life Magazine didnât seem to pay much attention to President Rooseveltâs November 24, 1941 decree that Thanksgiving should be held on in the fourth Thursday in November. Its November 1941 issue focused on other things, like knitting instructions, the lives of college coeds, life in Portland, ME during the war, and it also ran these images from a recent U.S. Camera and British-American Ambulance Corps âV for Victoryâ photo contest. Life lamented the U.S.â commercialization of the âV for Victoryâ symbol while lauding the BBCâs use of three dots and a dash (Morse Code) to introduce its daily short wave broadcasts as well as reports that âalmost every French home along the river Loire is marked with a hopeful V.â

Spotlight!
Ever find yourself sitting at the opera wondering what is going on because you havenât taken French since high school? You arenât alone! The Great Operas: The Romantic Legends Upon Which the Masters of Song Have Founded their Famous Lyrical Compositions is an enormous, five-volume set edited by James W. Buel that provides synopses of the greatest operas ever written, along with biographical sketches of the composers and beautiful copperplate illustrations. The work was endorsed by celebrated opera composer Giuseppe Verdi.Â
So, before your next big night out, come to Special Collections and read the synopsis of your chosen opera. You can find it in the catalog here
Contrary to popular opinion, the majority of operas are not about Vikings and Germanic peoples in horned helmets. (Wagner just took that theme and ran with it across four different operas.) Can you guess which opera is being depicted in each illustration? Click the images to enlarge and find a clue! Be sure to send us your guesses!
