I’m loving the spirit of these❤️ . . . It’s been a journey. Years of owls as a suggested motif, one morning the suggestion stuck and an owl almost carved itself onto the vase. It was easy. It emerged on its own accord. Sometimes I sit on an idea for months- years- and let it marinate. Let my skill set grow to meet the aspiration. Last minute library vase carved over many many minutes…. . . . Right before I finish my last kiln load for a show, I think about all of the pieces I didn’t make. Those pieces that were super popular last time. The pieces I made exactly one of, and promptly forgot about creating again. The vases that came to me as flashes of inspiration a month ago, but I instead worked in a different direction. A particularly nice batch of porcelain! . . This is the first 9 lbs, if the remaining 991 lbs of it is as fine as this…. What makes a “good” clay? It’s ability to hold its shape and stretch to its full potential of thinness. It’s “tall” clay. Achieved with aging and wedging, the particles of clay form a tight bond. “Short” clay may have been freshly mixed and pugged, poorly wedged, toooo wet… In the hands of a master all materials are productive, yes. But struggling is so last year! This finer porcelain allows for finer shapes. Which inspires finer carving.
