In 1998 movie Blade, Wesley Snipes’ character keeps a plant in a shrine. It is an ersatz hybrid plant, a juxtaposition of two species from disparate lineages: leaves and roots of a Dracaena, with flowers of Leucospermum stuck in around the base (ID credit here). The plant occurs in two scenes, and neither includes any dialogue. In the first, N’Bushe Wright’s character is exploring Blade’s hideout and learning about him from the environment he’s curated.

The latter scene happens before the climax of the film, when Blade is preparing for his final battle. He cuts the plant at the crown, severing its roots. This is apparently a symbolic act drawn from some historical warrior sect, but I wasn’t able to find any sources on that. Regardless, the metaphorical implications are clear. Blade is a hybrid, with both human and vampires present and expressed. He cuts the roots of this symbolic totem to show his independence from the people who made him and raised him–his adoptive father, his mother, and the vampire who bit her.
