The German language is famous for its long and sometimes weirdly specific words (“There is a word for that?” is a common reaction upon hearing some of these words). Here is a list of 17 weirdly specific German words and their translation/explanation:
das Backpfeifengesicht: a face that begs to be slapped
das Fernweh: distance pain (morriña in Galician and Spanish)
der/die Erbsenzähler, -in: someone who is obsessed with details and a bit of a control freak (tiquismiquis in Spanish)
der Kummerspeck: excess weight gained from emotional overeating
der/die Lebensabschnittsgefährte, -tin: “current partner”, temporary lover or partner
der Pantoffelheld: a man who may act tough in front of his friends but can’t stand up for himself against his wife (calzonazos; I hate this concept btw)
der Weltschmerz: depression or apathy caused by comparison of the actual state of the world with an ideal state
der/die Wildpinkler, -in: someone who avoids the toilet and likes to relieve themselves outside
der Zugzwang: forcing someone to make a decision
die Fremdscham: the feeling of shame on someone else’s behalf (vergüenza ajena)
die Schadenfreude: the feeling of pleasure derived from seeing another person’s misfortune
die Schnapsidee: an idea you have while drunk that you will probably regret in the morning
die Torschlusspanik: the fear that time to act is running out
die Wanderlust: a strong desire to travel
dreikäsehoch: “three-cheese-high”, a form of measurement
sturmfrei: when your parents are away, and you have the whole house to yourself
verschlimmbessern: to make something worse by trying to improve it
