something about how it would have been so easy for paul to be written as having the whole “you and i are superior to regular humans, look what we can do” thing from the beginning and they chose not to

i think paul’s savior / martyr complex, why he feels so driven to protect humanity and ensure they’ll survive the end of time, comes partially from having these abilities that fascinate and sometimes terrify those around him. when he traveled back to 1999 he was the only one with them, as jack wouldn’t get his powers until 2016. how terribly isolating that must have been. how understood he must have felt when hatch came along and did not flinch away from the occasional, accidental display of power.

( how betrayed he felt when the one other person who he knew could understand what living with this power, bearing the responsibility of it meant, looked at him like a stranger. )

zero state playing paul and jack’s ability to heal themselves as a kind of body horror, that of watching your own injuries play themselves backwards and still being able to feel the pain.

chronon syndrome getting depicted visually as body horror for both paul and beth, combined with the horror amaral feels at how accepting paul is of his state.

imagine paul and jack not being able to get sick anymore except from the same thing that gives them power. and even that can’t fully kill them.

You dream of calling it quits.  Making a clean break.  Retiring.  Escaping.  Leaving all this sordid misery and terror behind.  Getting in a car and driving till you see the sunrise, somewhere where the sun still rises.  Settling down, buying a house.  Fixing it up.  Building a life.  Finding someone.  It's a fool's dream.  It would all go bad.  And having let hope in, it would be unbearably worse than this.  You can take the man out of the city.  But you can never take the city out of the man.

common advice for social anxiety is to tell yourself "people aren't going to think less of you just because you said something a bit daft" but the thing is. sometimes they will. and you just have to learn to be cool with that and to treat it as a dnd random encounter rather than letting it ruin your whole day
