There went his poker face. Gareth was definitely laughing now. “How about you give me a name and stick with it?”

           ❛  i am beginning to wonder if there is more to this than meets the eye,  ❜  legwork would be a pitiful fate for holmes, but this - the art of reasoning all confined within a single seating - goldwin should be pitied. ❛  a normal person would have given up by now at the annoyance, “mr. goldwin”  ❜

DISGRUNTLED !   lips downturned in a deep scowl as he steps out of the shiny black car   ,   not even a glance backward at anthea before heading inside the posh building.     (   he was seriously regretting making acquaintance with a holmes.   )     it looks like an old man’s country club in here   ,   but somehow   ,   john knows exactly where to go   ,   pushing open the door to mycroft’s office.     his arms raise to fold ‘cross his chest   ,   his brow raised as he lingers in the doorway.      ❝     y’know , you don’t have to practically kidnap me off the side of the street anytime you want a chat . you could , oh i don’t know , phone me ? like a regular person would do ?       ❞

                          ❛  you and i have a very different views on the definition of kidnapping ,  ❜     legs crossed ,  back reclined ,  the front -  previously obscured by the daily paper - reveals a sardonic simper : corners of his mouth barely baring any uplifting features.  the man should give himself more credit  ;  the vehicle was a mere suggestion ,  to which the good doctor decided to comply.  the paper ,  folded twice along the horizontal crease ,  is placed on the wooden side table as head tilt to the seat across. a mere invitation to sit should be nothing compared to the apparent kidnapping.  ❛ your suggestion - nonetheless - is dully noted, doctor watson. i will consider the alternative if i ever come across a regular person. so far ,  i have not.  ❜

“It’s just Gary, Mr. Holmes.” His lips twitched as Mycroft continued, but there was no smile. Not yet. Gareth shouldn’t find the guesses as amusing as he did. “Why are you determined to find a different name for me?”

                  ‘ just gary, is that right ? ’ playful resonance, but the name spits out bitterly. he’s not letting go of the matter yet. ‘ nay, i am trying to find out your real name, mister gary goldwin ! so, tell me : sebastian ? scott ? sean ? sherlock ?!  ’

does he follow the conversation or does he follow politics, is what he’s tempted to ask. the answer, easy to guess in either case, is a resounding no.  ‘ … i’ve stolen this coat to get in and this tray — ’ he tilts a little silver number; crab cakes. ‘ — off a caterer, so i mightn’t be the class to chat to. about politics. ’

                    ‘ oh, ’ in fact, he should stop chatting with the man to his better judgement. but stolen coat and crab cakes - out of all entrée so to speak - make for a better entertainment than his other choices : a group of old boys four seats down, discussing their good ol’ days ; average joes that talk of sports ; the lone mr. chatterbox, eager to liberate his knowledge and wisdom to those unwilling. besides, he’d like to know more about the essence that emanates from mr. stolen-coat : earthy, mechanical, a hints of engine oil, perhaps. head tilts to the empty chair, it’s an order rather than an invitation.  ‘ do you work with machines ? ’

            the front gate - wide open , the front door - unlocked / yet , the house shows no sign of strange movement ( to a stranger’s eye ; a myopic conclusion : they must have forgotten to close the gate , and lock the door for they were in a hurry - a childish mistake ) . but holmes knows better . hands are tucked away into the coat pocket , with each step he takes meticulously planned and calculated .  

            he’s only at the front hall but a strong metallic smell pierces his nose –– and immediately he recognises the scent : blood .  from the inner pocket , he retrieves the monogramed handkerchief , which then he uses to cover the knob , twisting ever gently . a nudge is plenty for the door to creak open . 

            he sees del in the corner , motionless . quite possibly emotionless . hands cupping his face , harsh breaths escape . and in the centre : a body - limp , all traces of life vanished , only their blood contest through the gaps of the hardwood floor ; desperately trying to make their last mark . 

            holmes spends no more than a mere second on the cadaver : adult hands , prominent with bones than of a teenagers ; youthful appearance retained behind the dark mask - must have been a man in his twenties . he’s face up ,  stabbed in the chest , handle pointed upwards -  indication of struggle and unexpected overpower . common theft , he suspects . perhaps - from the deadly result - his final heist ; he had nothing to lose , after all . 

           his attention swings back to the shaken reporter . there’s no use for comforting words , they would all be lies . instead , he suggests an alternative , a partnership . 

                    ‘ oh , mister lestrade . what shall we do now ? ’

“My parents weren’t the imaginative type.” He kept his expression neutral. Professional. “Gary’s a perfectly good name for a humble tailor like me. Sir.”

                  ‘ a humble savile row tailor ? i seem to have found a new species, mr. goldwin, ’ he -– no, the supposed mr. gary goldwin, should know better. men like them aren’t feathered with unimaginative parents. if anything, they should be graceful that their full name isn’t two pages long. ‘ john ? sam ? samuel ? am i getting close at all ? ’

                   ‘ is it --- william ? arthur ? charles ? oh god, is it mycroft ? ’ face contorts in horror at the possibility of the tailor being a mycroft. ‘ i am your best client, and yet you refuse to tell me your name. no, no, i am having none of that ‘gary’ nonsense. no parent in their right mind would name a child gary ’
