now i'm wondering if the murder-suicide ending isn't wrong. it's tonally accurate but is it character-accurate... hmmm... i mean it is, but here's my conundrum: while i did explain why jason would hypothetically kill himself [it puts control over the ending of his life (which he already doesn't see lasting that long) into his own hands], & val has been wanting jason to kill him for almost as long as val's known jason .. the entire point of ocstory is that val is a wilting flower who blooms during his time with jason. ok well ocstory is about val suffering first & foremost but after said suffering he does undergo a .. well i wouldn't call it a radical personality change per se, but he is unlocking parts of himself that he either had repressed/suppressed or which were unknown to him beforehand. so that image of them both pulling the trigger at the same time & killing each other... well... the double murder is feeling very yummy to me now
& this isn't a new thought, i've already long since had the thought that val has a 'becoming' a la will graham under hannibal (though not nearly as elegant or well-conceptualized), but. val post-becoming is probably not the passive docile victim he would've been at 22 or 23, when he was dissociating through a dismemberment & a first unplanned murder, respectively.
for jason as well .. he's somebody who is with val precisely because val is insane in exactly the right ways. val complements jason very well. he's somebody who wants everything he can get from val, for multiple reasons honestly, but those of which do include jason wanting to own val completely & totally, which is why the murder part of the murder-suicide was already accurate. it's just whether jason would go out on his own or with val. it does seem like a concession on jason's part to sort of give val the authority to take jason out, when i did admit that he's not the type who would easily allow somebody else the authority to determine his ending.
on the other hand... is that not the point, jason finally having either the one person he'd allow to do so, or feeling so comfortable with another person for once that he lets loose the reins just a bit? so it's not a defeat or a concession. it's a very very very hard-won kind of trust that jason is showing in val, who by that point has been jason's life partner for give or take 10 years. jason made val what he is, he unlocked that homicidal capability in val [albeit accidentally! but it still happened], & he absolutely would only let himself OR val be the one to take him out. they're equals at the end. yes... this feels much better than the murder-suicide. i was wrong before. jason feels the gun against his forehead & sees no hesitation in val's eyes & he feels almost proud in val, who has since become his equal... bows gracefully

& i was only thinking about it because i had the image in my mind before that of a jason who didn't love val back, in some imagined scene where val says 'i love--' & doesn't get to finish before jason shoots him. aauah
