You and me both.
What kind of distraction?
Uhm, I’m going to vote for the scary Korean one because it sounds a little more exciting. Does it include executions?
Wait, let me get the instructions. Executions... Yes. If I steal your chicken. Or if you catch me sitting in your rice paddy terrace... Wow. And apparently the full moon plays a big role too.
Hey...
"We could play Monopoly. I think Harper has it around here somewhere."
Yeah, sure, um. The regular or the, um, the Korean version where every square is jail except for one piece of property which we have to fight for?
"You know — I’m 18 right? I’m not the best distraction…"
18? That's lovely. But why would you think that's a downside? I mean, you could update me on the latest, um, trends. That would be fun. Is Katy Perry still in? What about Facebook?
"I’m in need of a distraction."
Why? Met lots of serial killers before?
That’s… Well… At least you knew what you were made for. Great! Glad you got what you wanted, detective.
Yes, as a matter of fact. But I feel much better now that I know I can kick your ass.
Aw, I'm sure you are meant to be doing something too. Maybe even comforting desperate women in public bathroom is your life calling, who knows.
Yet you still are.
Well me too, but damn! I’ve still seen a ton of things! What do you want to know, huh? My name is William McIntyre. I like my steak super rare and my whiskey by the bottle.
I have to be careful, that's all.
The moment I was handed my first badge and a police hat, every other toy ceased to exist. No-- yes, that's all I wanted to know.
So many around Nora had forgotten what hope was. They were so hellbent on destruction and chaos that they didn’t stick to what their heart told them, to what they could see prior to the blinding pain. In Nora’s mind, that’s what made them helpless. Luckily for her, she hadn’t experienced anything to that particular multitude, and she still had her mind about her. Nora hated that the woman was right. Nobody just deserved protection. You had to fight for it. You had to earn it, and show that you would replicate that protection and pass it onto somebody else. Did that mean Nora didn’t deserve protection? She was good for nothing. “What if you can’t fight for that protection.” Nora looked back to the bird, “what if you’re too naive and young to understand the concept?” She looked back to the woman, hoping for an answer. She looked like she had a wisdom about her— a wisdom that Nora hoped she could pass on.
The redhead was so deeply in thought and Victoria could see those little wheels in her head turning, her young mind reminiscing, trying to wander off into every possible direction at once. For a moment there, the woman focused on Nora's strong heartbeat, her inner strength. While the girl looked so calm on the outside, Victoria went back to the New Year's eve when, during their brief conversation, the two agreed that everything was never as it seemed, especially when it came to physical appearance. Or when it came to Nora. Clearing her throat, she pulled a tissue out of her purse and covered the lifeless bird with it. "Fighting—That's not just using some kind of weapon; big muscles, guns, wisdom or experience. I think that…“ She carried on carefully. "Breathing, finding the reason to get up every morning, surviving the day… That counts as fighting too, in a way. Other things will come eventually. It's important to understand and accept the fact that we're not all the same. Some are better at fighting their battles quietly.“ That was just it, wasn't it. Nora wanted to talk: to listen and to be heard. Victoria could do that. However, she wasn't sure if she could offer anything else.
Guess I must be a serial killer then.
How in the hell have you never seen the Lion King? Holy shit. Get your ass on Netflix right now. Why ain’t that enough?
You could be. For that reason, I shouldn't be talking to you.
I barely watched TV as a kid. I liked spending time outdoors, playing with my friends, making mud pies. Because those are just facts, you didn't put in even minimal effort.
Looking forward to a long night?
Oh yeah. Who needs sleep anyway. --You see, if I keep telling myself that, I'm going to feel better.
What about you?
Did you go to school here? I knew we were in the south, but that’s truly sad. You should google the period if you ever get a chance. It was brilliant. And no, darling, it wasn’t a compliment.
You make life sound so depressing. Tell me why it’s depressing. My mood will be fine.
Yes, I did. If I find the time, I'll check it out, it does sound interesting. Are you a historian or just fascinated? Oh. In that case, I misunderstood you.
Life? No. My life at the moment? Yes. That's how I feel but I'd rather not talk about that. Why don't you tell me why you think life isn't so depressing?
Well, consider me admirable, even if it isn’t world domination I’m after. You’re the cop. Do you think I’m a serial killer?
What? Something about me? I like old records and I’ve been known to cry over the Lion King. There. Two things.
Sorry, I can't consider you admirable. Well, you're rude, pretty sure you're a psycho too, have no respect for women whatsoever. Can be a self-absorbed ass. So there's that.
That didn't require the amount of effort I'm looking for, what else you got? ... Lion King? The cartoon? Never seen it.
Well, I’d hate to disappoint you with something reasonable! There’s plenty things I want in life, I just think an officer of the law might disapprove of 99% of them. Wasn’t so hard, right?
Aw! Great answer. No effort from me required.
That doesn't mean I wouldn't respect or... understand. Knowing exactly what and why you want something is very... admirable. Your life goals can't be that bad, unless... Are you a serial killer? No, it was hard.
... Oh hell no. Now you're gonna tell me.
World domination? Ah, no. Nope. Gotta pick one.
Guess you’re the one with the answer to that question.
What a mature answer, William. It simply blew me away. Is that the only thing-- all you want in life? Fine. If I can't have Victoria, I might as well take Vic. God help me.
Okay. No.
Yeah, but that requires effort I’m not willing to put into something that dumb. Aw, you’re so sweet. What do you prefer: Vic or sweetheart? Gotta stick with one. Hm, well there’s a lot you don’t know about me.
I'm curious, tell me, what are you willing to struggle for? Victoria sounds perfectly fine to me.
I think that's a good thing. Would I even want to know more?
