Parallels between Mob and Serizawa
First off, I canāt believe this anime is almost over, how will I be able to live my life without my weekly dose of Mob Mondays? But getting to the point, Episode 12 showed us a great example of the parallels between Mob and Serizawa. Just like how Mogami represented a path Mob could have gone down if heād had no one to stop him, Serizawa is just like Mob, except that he didnāt have a good mentor like Reigen to teach him right from wrong.
In Serizawaās flashback to his meeting with Touichirou, we see the same line that Reigen told Mob when he first took him under his wing:
Both Mob and Serizawa had someone come into their life to act as a guiding force, but while Reigen actually concerned himself with Mobās well-being, Serizawa was seen as less than human by Touichirou.
Then in the transition slides:
I love this parallel since it shows how Serizawa is looking at Touichirou, Touichirou is standing independently away from Serizawa and is facing forward rather than towards Seri.Ā
On the other hand, Mob notices that the umbrella isnāt covering the both of them, so he erects a barrier to keep Reigen out of the rain- a show of Mobās gratitude and kindness towards his master. Reigenās posture is hunched and turned in Mobās direction, showing their closeness and his reliance on Mob. Both of them rely on each other, and as it was shown in epiosde 7, it wasnāt just Mob who was saved by Reigen, but it was also his master who was saved upon meeting him.
In the case of Seri and Touichirou, not only is Touichirou standing to the side, but its clear that the umbrella is wide and tall enough for the two without him having to bend down like Reigen. Itās Reigenās slight crouch that shows heās accepting Mobās umbrella, and as an extension, his help, whereas Touichirou refuses to rely on anyone but himself.
This got rather long, but in a nutshell, thank you Bones for the addition of this great parallel.
Touichirou: You are weak. Your existence has no value. Your friends and family suck. Your beliefs are stupid, Iām going to kill you
Mob: Okay
Touichirou: Also Shou, youāre a failure and I-
Mob:
oh i know this is a little bitĀ obvious but i love the contrast between these two images. reigen purposefully lowers himself to mobs level, allowing himself to make eye contact, to be less intimidating, and equals with mob.Ā
serizawa doesnt get that same treatment. instead toichiro looms over him as a savior figure far above serizawa.Ā
Mob Psycho subverts the shonen genre by making the focus of mob not on his power, but on himself, which is something i really love about the show. The growth in skills he experiences has nothing to do with psychic abilities, but instead, with something else entirely.
Mob starts out as an awkward, uncharismatic kid. He isnāt able to read the room. He doesnāt know how to get his point across. He isnāt able to articulate his thoughts and feelings.
Reigen being mobās mentor, but not being a psychic, seems to go against everything you would expect from an Anime mentor figure. I mean, how is he supposed to help mob as a mentor if he canāt train him to better use his powers? But the truth is, Reigen is the perfect mentor for Mob. Unlike in other shows where purpose of the Mentor is to teach the main character to improve their powers, Reigen exists to help Mob grow in other ways. Mob is a character that needs to improve his ability to connect with other people. This is something that reigen is able to teach him. Reigen is charismatic, diplomatic, and good at reading people. In this sense, he is the person best fit toĀ ātrainā Mob. Heās the perfect mentor figure for what Mob needs.Ā
I also loved that the climax of the first season did not end, as many anime seasons do, with Mob fighting and beating the villians to a pulp. Instead, Mob transfers his powers to Reigen, so Reigen can stand in his place and succeed where he could not: in persuading the villians to change their ways. Mob isnāt a character that tries to win fights by sheer force of power. Instead, he usually tries to convince the opposing person to see the error in their philosophy, and to change themselves. In the beginning of the first season, heās not really good at it. Heās not able to convince Teru to stop attacking him, heās not able to stop the psycho cult. He ends up having to resort to using his psychic powers, despite the fact he would much rather not. As the show progresses, Itās not Mobās powers that grow, but his ability to change peopleās perspectives.
This scene right here. This is where I really realized just how much Mob had grown. Heās so- so eloquent.Ā Heās able to argue and defend his point of view. Its more than just a simple,Ā āYou shouldnāt rely on your psychic powers.ā He is able to articulate and explain to the grunts exactly why it is that they, even as espers, still need to rely on others. Something about this speech had such a Reigen feel to it. It reminded me so much of the speech Reigen makes to the Scars at the end of Season 1.Ā
I feel that throughout this season Mob is growing, but not in power. Heās growing in confidence, learning to better articulate his thoughts, learning how to better connect with people. THATāS the real power heās learning to hone.
And for that growth I feel so proud of him.
Mob as a character has grown so much since the first season. And honestly? I just canāt wait to see how he grows throughout the rest of the show.Ā
i tried being courageousĀ for once, president.
