The history of the Kingdom of Etheria began in an age of chaos, when the northern lands were fractured by constant wars between rival lords and clans.
From this disorder emerged Russell I of the House of Alder, the warrior king who united the realm and became remembered as the “First King of Etheria.” He established the kingdom’s first capital at Alderren, laid the foundations of the feudal system, and transformed a loose collection of territories into a single crown.
By his side stood Bell I, originally known as Lisette, a Scandinavian princess and former shield maiden from the northern seas. After marrying Russell I, she converted to Christianity and played an important role in spreading the faith throughout the kingdom. Legends surrounding her became almost as famous as those of her husband. During one Norse raid on the port city of Frostharbor, while Russell was away at war and Bell herself was carrying a child, she reportedly took command of the city’s defenses and inspired the people to hold the walls until reinforcements arrived. The story later earned her the title “The Queen of the Northern Walls.”
Russell I and Bell I had three sons: Prince Phillip, the composed and dutiful heir; Prince Blake, a fierce and ambitious warrior; and Prince James, Blake’s twin brother, who was far more interested in seafaring and northern traditions than court politics. After Russell I died from an infected wound sustained during a military campaign, rivalry among the brothers slowly weakened the stability of the House of Alder.
Centuries later, Etheria entered a new era under Russell II of the House of Valentine. Rising to power during the Renaissance after years of civil war, Russell II reshaped the kingdom into a centralized absolutist state. Known as a brilliant military ruler, he modernized the army with muskets and cannons while reducing the influence of feudal nobles. Historians often credit him as the architect of the modern Etherian monarchy.
His queen, Bell II, born Jessica of the Aurenian Empire, was raised in a sophisticated court of scholars, artists, and jurists. Unlike her war-driven husband, Jessica valued law, discipline, and reason above all else. She became famous for convincing Russell II to spare several defeated rebel nobles from execution, preventing further unrest and earning the nickname “The Queen of Justice.” Their only child, Princess Lorraine, was highly educated in diplomacy, languages, and law, becoming admired throughout foreign courts as a symbol of the Renaissance princess. Though she never ruled in her own right, her marriage secured valuable alliances for Etheria.
Under Russell III of the House of Rosenhelm, Etheria entered its golden age. Unlike his predecessors, Russell III focused less on conquest and more on commerce, naval power, and international influence. Merchant fleets expanded across distant seas, banks and trade companies flourished, and the kingdom became one of the wealthiest maritime powers of its age.
His queen, Aleksandra of Wallachia, brought elegance and refinement to the Etherian court. Renowned for her beauty, grace, and influence on fashion, she introduced foreign music, art, and aristocratic customs that reshaped high society. During a devastating winter famine, she opened royal granaries to feed the people and canceled extravagant court celebrations, earning the affectionate title “The Queen of Winter.”
Their children reflected the spirit of the age itself. Prince Phillip was trained in trade and navigation as heir to the kingdom’s growing commercial empire, Princess Marynee became a cultural icon admired by nobles across Europe, and Prince Russell devoted himself to scholarship and the arts. Russell III eventually died from heart failure after decades spent overseeing Etheria’s vast trading network, while Aleksandra remained the cultural heart of the royal court until the end of her life.
The reign of Russell IV of the House of Grandchester marked the arrival of industrialization. Railways spread across the kingdom, factories rose above the cities, and telegraph lines connected regions faster than ever before. Under his rule, Etheria became a modern industrial power, though rapid progress also brought poverty, dangerous labor conditions, and widening inequality.
Bell IV, formerly Natalia, became one of the most beloved queens in Etherian history for her compassion toward ordinary people. Following a deadly factory explosion in the city of Valeska, she personally visited injured workers and grieving families, pressuring officials to establish the kingdom’s first industrial safety reforms. Newspapers later called her “The Lady in Black of Valeska.”
Russell IV and Natalia had twins: Prince Andrei, educated in engineering and military science, and Princess Lana, who became known for supporting labor rights and women’s welfare. Russell IV later died from respiratory illness believed to have been caused by years spent inspecting factories and industrial sites, while Natalia dedicated the rest of her life to hospitals, orphanages, and charitable work.
In the twentieth century, Russell V of the House of Wintermere guided Etheria into the modern democratic age. Faced with growing political unrest and demands for reform, he chose compromise over repression and introduced a constitution that transformed Etheria into a constitutional monarchy. He also appointed Jason Hudson as the nation’s first prime minister, marking the beginning of parliamentary government.
Beside him stood Bell V, originally Princess Maiya of Scandinavia, whose warmth and humility made her deeply admired by the public. Rather than maintaining distance from ordinary citizens, she devoted herself to education, women’s rights, and humanitarian causes. One of the most enduring images of the modern monarchy came during a rain-soaked memorial ceremony for war veterans, where Maiya refused to leave despite the storm, standing among grieving families beneath a black umbrella. The moment became symbolic of a royal family learning to stand beside its people rather than above them.
Though little is recorded about the children of Russell V and Maiya, their reign marked the final transformation of Etheria from a kingdom once forged by swords and feudal wars into a modern constitutional state shaped by democracy, industry, and social reform.
