El “desalmado” de Jack o El “desgraciado” de Jack

Hace más de un año que terminé de leer - El Resplandor - obra de Stephen King, desde entonces había querido hacer una breve reseña recalcando lo que para mí significó un personaje tan complejo como Jack Torrance.

Desde la geografía montañosa a la que nos transporta el libro, ya se podía sentir un ambiente lo suficientemente tenso, desolado y temeroso como para que lo que parecía ser un gran hombre terminara por tener deseos serios de asesinar a su hijo y a su esposa.

Jack Torrance es un personaje por el cual sentí una profunda empatía. Él solo deseaba sacar a su familia adelante, ofrecerles estabilidad económica, comodidad y un futuro seguro a su lado. Muchas veces se obvia que un hombre debe sacar adelante a su familia, porque es algo natural y sin querer se omiten todos los sacrificios, pruebas y retos que deben ser superados. Por esta razón, me es inevitable dejar de valorar el hombre tan valiente y tan ejemplar como fue Jack Torrance al atreverse a afrontar retos inimaginables, todo por el bien de su familia.

Lo que me apena profundamente, es ver cómo el destino, el clima, el alcohol y la misma presión que este hombre llevaba sobre sus hombros, hizo que dejara a un lado todas las intenciones nobles y valientes que tenía. Pienso que su mente colapsó por el daño que le había causado a su único hijo, sus problemas alcohólicos y un ambiente tan oscuro, legendario e histórico como el Hotel Overlook, quebraron la cordura de quien para mí pudo haber sido un padre ejemplar. Lo demás es historia... el hacha rompiendo la puerta, una sonrisa diabólica y una mirada llena de odio es lo último que Jack le dejó ver a la humanidad...

De todas maneras, siempre pensaré que este hombre fue simplemente una víctima del destino, por lo que Jack Torrance no es un desalmado, sino un hombre que tuvo que soportar cómo toda la desgracia desvanecía su integridad.

I truly don’t think people realize how dingy and dark most movies and tv shows actually are so they can’t appreciate the work and skill it takes to make gifs look the way your brain “remembers” it looking.

Another before and after example:

This gif needed 6 different adjustment layers, not including the sharpening process, which is its own separate challenge. The blue window was also changed to green to keep the palette more consistent and to reduce the range of colors needed, because a wider range of colors generally results in worse gif quality since gifs only support a max of 256 (compared to the millions your monitor can display).

age appropriate sansa stark fancasting resource

So, as you all know, Sansa is 11 at the start of A Song of Ice and Fire and around the time of AFFC/ADWD she’s around 14. That makes her pretty challenging to fancast and most of the actresses/models that are popularly fancast as her are a good deal older than her actual age in the books. So here, I’m going to share some of my favorite and most popular fancasts for book!Sansa, and tell you where you can find footage for them. This is by no means an exhaustive list and feel free to add your own suggestions! Some of these actors don’t have red hair so if anyone wants a tutorial on how to change someone’s hair color then let me know and I’ll make one.

Note on ages: As a general rule of thumb, movies and tv shows usually film about one year before they’re actually released so that is where I’m getting the ages.

Layla Burns

Layla is a child actress and I can’t find her birthdate online but according to a website called Mandy Acting that seems to represent her she is 14 years old. She appears in the series Outlander (far right) and footage from that show have sometimes been used as a fancast for Sansa. While her outfits in that show don’t really work for book Sansa it can work if you need a gif. She appears in the episodes 3x08 “First Wife” and 4x07 “Down the Rabbit Hole.” However the REAL reason I’m suggesting her is because of a photoshoot she did with Darja Bilyk in 2017 that features several images of her wearing a crown (middle)! Rachel Hurd-Wood

Footage from Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006) is sometimes used as a Sansa fancast (middle). Rachel would have been around 15 when that movie was filmed. If you want to go even younger, I suggest going back to Peter Pan (2003) where she would be 12.

Sadie Sink

Sadie Sink is probably the most popular fancast for book age Sansa right now, probably because she’s a teenage actress with red hair who started getting popular around when people first became disillusioned with the show. She is currently 18, has been a child actor since she was 10 and started playing Max in Stranger Things when she was 14. The main downside with Sadie as a fancast is that she hasn’t been in anything that can even remotely resemble period footage, however I’ve noticed quite a few people use this video she did with Miu Miu in their gifsets.

Dakota Blue Richards

Footage used is from the 2008 film The Secret of Moonacre. Dakota would have been around 13.

Mackenzie Foy

Footage from The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018) is sometimes used as Alayne. That movie had an unusually long post-production so Mackenzie actually would have been closer to 16 than 17 when it was filmed. Also it is worth mentioning that she is 13 and has red hair in the movie Interstellar (2014, middle).

Isolda Dychauk

At first I wasn’t going to bother including Isolda at all because I figured she had to be in her 20s but she’s actually 17 in the first season of Borgia: Faith and Fear. I consider that to be within the acceptable age range for book!Sansa, plus I have other 17 year olds on this list so I figured I’d include her. Isolda is also popularly fancast as Lysa a lot too. Definitely on the older side but I do like her as Sansa. She is also in the 2011 German film Faust (far right). I haven’t checked it in depth but the movie is set in the 1800s and seems to have some usable footage. You can find clips from the movie by searching for “faust 2011″ on YouTube but the first few videos look like they were recorded with someone’s phone so scroll down a bit.

Other

On the right is Laoise Murray who plays Elizabeth in the fourth season of The Tudors. I’ve seen a couple people use her and she would have been 13. Neither of the other two actors have been used as Sansa fancasts by anyone besides me but I thought it was worth mentioning anyways. Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby (1978, left) is 12 and a lot of the scenes could pass as period footage. I also had the idea of using 10-year-old Liesel Matthews in A Little Princess (1995, middle) as Sansa if anyone wants to try it.
