The Walking Dead nearly killed Carol in Season 3, but Scott Gimple pushed to keep her alive.
IT'S STARTING. Scott Gimple and that dick, Nicotoro have started the bull shit trying to make themselves the heroes.
A new article says Gimple fought to keep Melissa McBride on the show. We all know this is a lie. They wanted to kill her, Melissa herself talk them into keeping her. She told them what they could do for the character . REVISIONIST HISTORY.
WHY THE HELL did I read this at 1.59 PM when I was just on my way to sleep? now I'm gonna be awake screaming at the computer screen.lol
I seriously fucking hate this man, this network, and anyone associated with the creative decisions. This is such BS. They called her up and told her she was going to be killed and she talked them out of killing off her character, now Nicotoro and Gimple are trying to take credit for it?
HELL NO
Here is what he said. I'm gonna scream now.
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times for its 2022 oral history feature, Scott Gimple explained why he strongly advocated for Carol's survival beyond "The Walking Dead" Season 3.
"I made a pretty impassioned 'Inherit the Wind'-style argument towards keeping Carol alive," he said. "To see her beginnings on the show — and not for nothing, the sheer thespian power of Melissa McBride — you see this character that could make this journey. We're now at this inflection point where she's just starting to grow. And she almost died in the prison. What could this character become from those beginnings, to go from victim to victor, to go from somebody under the thumb of someone to a warrior … Carol's story has been a pillar of the show. Her strength doesn't let her die."
LIAR.
When I said “Obviously Daryl’s care for Carol goes deeper than just romantic and I don’t mean that he’d have only offered to help because of romantic interest.”, I was worried that it would be interpreted to mean that I didn’t think romantic love is deep enough. That isn’t what I meant. I meant that Daryl’s care for Carol isn’t conditional on, for example, his romantic attraction to her. And I said that because I think of examples like Rick and Jessie, where Rick explicitly says that he tries to protect Jessie from abuse because he’s romantically attracted to her. I found that offensive. Men only showing care for women because of the promise or hope for sex is a huge issue in real life, so I didn’t want what I was saying about Daryl and Carol to be seen like that. And it is something that antis use to dismiss the views of shippers. Romantic love is absolutely strong enough and deep enough. But that gets misinterpreted sometimes.
"I was worried that it would be interpreted to mean that I didn’t think romantic love is deep enough."
I didn't think that's what you meant, anon 🫂You mentioned other people's interpretations making you second guess your own sometimes, so I thought maybe you were trying to be extra cautious with your phrasing for that reason.
In any case, yes, I agree that Daryl's love for Carol is unconditional and vice versa. They would do anything for each other regardless of what they hoped for in return. They try to put each other's needs ahead of their own.
That was me in the comments, saying the romantic = shallow discourse burns by goat. And while I do think it is important to interrogate these ideas (which stem from internalised misogyny) and be careful in how we repeat them/express ourselves, I do also understand how shippers can get turned about by them. In my experience, (canon) shippers are often the most intelligent people in the conversation. They have the strongest understanding of the characters and their arcs. And they have evidence -- actual evidence -- to back up their interpretation of events. But (as this ask/answer touches on) we're also maligned and dismissed to such an extent in fandom (and culture at large) that we get gaslit into believing we don't know what the fuck we're talking about. It's total bs. Don't let it work on you.
Men only showing care for women because of the promise or hope for sex is a huge issue <<< this is a good point. Men should not care about women or the abuse they face (whether at the hands of other men or whole institutions/governments/states) because of what they mean to them or can get from them. They should care about women because we're human beings with rights.
