Child cancer hits almost 10,000 children in the UK by The Health Insurance Group http://ift.tt/Jm9hxK What are the implications of these latest figures? Recent figures have revealed that almost 10,000 children in the UK have cancer. In today's video, we look at the importance of follow up care for children who survive cancer. Research conducted by Macmillan Cancer Support and the National Cancer Intelligence Network have shown there are almost 10,000 children aged 0-14 currently living with cancer in the UK, with almost half being diagnosed at least 5 years ago. It has been suggested that many children who survive cancer have a higher risk of health problems such as heart and lung conditions as well as problems with growth and development. Suggestions are made that experts believe children often do not receive timely and appropriate follow-up care and that there needs to be a greater understanding of the risks faced by those treated as children. Carol Porter, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group recently said: The most commonly diagnosed cancer in children is leukaemia, which accounts for almost a third of new cases a year. It is encouraging to see that almost half of all under 14s diagnosed with cancer are still living five-years on, but a concern that many children will end up with an increased risk of other health conditions, including an increased risk of developing secondary cancers. It is important that Adult specialists and GPs need to know how to manage the side-effects and lifestyle changes that can affect those treated for cancer as children. Asthma Symptoms Could Be Eased By Altering Diet? by The Health Insurance Group http://ift.tt/Jm9hxK Are asthma increases a symptom of modern life? It has been suggested that asthma symptoms could be eased by altering diet, based on recent research conducted on mice. Today we take a look at the findings. A report published in the journal Nature Medicine has revealed that tests on mice have shown that inflammation in the lungs could be reduced by a high-fire diet. It is suggested that the rise in consumption of processed foods could explain the increase in people developing asthma. Experts have called for more tests to be conducted before the suggestions outlined in the report are implemented in people. Carol Porter, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group recently said on this topic: In recent decades, there has been a well-documented increase in the incidence of allergic asthma in developed countries, including the UK. It may be no coincidence that during this time there have been changes in diet, including the shift to processed foods and a reduction in the consumption of fibre. Diet plays an important part in a person's overall health. Scientists are also investigating the role of diet in long-term lung inflammation such as COPD, which is set to become a major health concern. Weʼd love to hear your thoughts on the matter. Private Health Care Helping to Reduce Cancer Death Rates? by The Health Insurance Group http://ift.tt/Jm9hxK Although more people are being diagnosed with cancer - death rates are falling According to a recently published article, the death rate for cancer has reduced by almost a fifth despite more people being diagnosed with the disease. In today's video, we examine the figures released in a recent analysis conducted by Cancer Research UK. The analysis conducted has shown that in 1990, 220 people in every 100,000 died of cancer compared to 170 in 2011. This indicates a 22% reduction in the number of cancer deaths. According to the report, experts believe research has played a key part in the reduction as increased knowledge of cancer prevention as well as the improved treatment of the disease has significantly reduced the number of lives lost to cancer. Brett Hill, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group recently said: As advances in medical technology improve the survival rate for cancer, our lifestyle choices mean that more people than ever are being diagnosed with the disease. Effective treatments can only do so much in the fight against cancer, unless we can effectively address the preventable causes of cancer it will continue to place an ever increasing cost on our healthcare system. 1 billion smokers worldwide? by The Health Insurance Group http://ift.tt/1hY29Ec is estimated that there is over 1 billion smokers world wide Recent reports claim that the total number of smokers worldwide is almost reaching 1 billion. Experts call for tobacco control measures to curb the rising number of smokers globally. A study conducted in the US indicates that despite the popularity of smoking decreasing in many countries, there were 967 million people who smoked every day in 2012. In comparison, the number of daily smokers in 1980 was 721 million. It is suggested that a variety of tobacco control measures should be introduced across all countries to reduce the number of smokers and the subsequent amount of sickness and death resulting from smoking. Brett Hill, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group recently said: The links between smoking and lung cancer have been established for over 50 years, yet even today around 12% of UK children will be smokers by the age of 15. Against that background, plain packaging for cigarettes seems a modest, sensible proposal for the UK to consider, despite concerns that it could increase sales of counterfeit tobacco. A similar measure in Australia triggered a 75% increase in calls to stop-smoking helplines. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter. Flexible working decreases stress and improves wellbeing by The Health Insurance Group http://ift.tt/Jm9hxK Employers need to consider flexible working for employees according to this evidence According to a recent poll, flexible working not only decreases stress but improves the wellbeing of employees. We take a look at the benefits of flexible working. A newly released study of 4,000 businesses conducted by Regus has shown that flexible working is crucial in reducing work related stress. According to the poll, almost 70% of businesses believe that stress levels are improved by flexible working. Suggestions are made that an increase in absenteeism is experienced as a result of stressed employees and it is reported that experts believe flexible working options is an effective way to address this. Mike Thomas, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group offered his thoughts on the benefits of flexible working options: Flexible working arrangements can help employees improve their work/life balance, and allows more freedom to carry out family or personal activities, and have more control over personal time-management. This inevitably leads to a reduction in stress as these important tasks such as 'school runs' and medical appointments can be carried out in the knowledge that they are not negatively impacting on work performance. Additionally, working from home arrangements can considerably reduce the daily stress of a miserable commute. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter. Health Services Need To Be Translated For Foreign Residents by TranslationsTV http://ift.tt/18OTcg7 The NHS in Edinburgh has seen a large increase in the number of foreign residents needing health service information in their own language. The city's largest ethnic group, the Poles, required nearly 13,000 hours of translation and interpreting services which saw the cost of these services rise to over £700,000 for the year. We look at the details behind the story. NHS Lothian spent over £700,000 on providing translation services for its Polish population which currently stands at 40,000 people. The service claims that the rise is due to the increasing demand for information in languages other than English. Of the 26,100 hours total spent on direct interpreting, 12,490 hours were for Polish followed by Chinese, Arabic, Turkish, Bengali, Portuguese and Russian. A spokesperson for London Translations recently said, "Whilst the demand for translation and interpreting services in languages from central and eastern Europe has certainly increased over the last few years, we expect a levelling off and even a drop as people from those parts of the world learn English either formally or 'by osmosis' as they live and work here". Are You More Genetically Prone to Stress & Heart Disease? by The Health Insurance Group http://ift.tt/Jm9hxK Why are some people at a greater risk from stress than others? A study of more than 6,100 heart patients has revealed that stress may directly increase the risk of heart disease. In this video, we examine the results of the study. Reports suggest that the recent study has shown that patients with a genetic variation known to make people sensitive to stress have a 38% increased risk of cardiac problems. It is reported that even after taking into account risk factors such as age, obesity and smoking status, the genetic trait was linked to a higher chance of heart attack. Experts believe that the discovery of this link has highlighted the need for tackling the problem of coping with stress. Suggestions offered include a balanced diet and regular physical exercise. We asked Mike Thomas, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group for his thoughts on this topic: "The ability to cope with stress can be enhanced through breaking up your working activities with regular breaks and embarking on short periods of moderate exercise. Going for a walk at lunchtime is known to be an effective stress-buster. Employee Assistance Programs are available for companies which offer help and provide tips and ideas that companies can implement to help employees with stress, including providing helplines for employees to contact should they require support." Obesity Rates Are Rising by The Health Insurance Group http://ift.tt/Jm9hxK A recent report has revealed that there is a growing number of people with obesity worldwide leading to predictions of an increase in diabetes, strokes and heart attacks. In the video, we take a look at why obesity is rising. The report conducted by The Overseas Development Institute suggests that 34% of adults worldwide and 64% of adults in the UK are overweight or obese. It is claimed that the global number of overweight and obese people has increased substantially, with the majority of the increase occurring in developing countries. It is suggested that lifestyle changes, advertising influences, the accessibility to processed food and limited physical exercise have all contributed to the increase. Mike Thomas, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group recently said... "It is widely recognized that making small lifestyle changes can lead to significant improvement to an individual's health. Improving diet and increasing exercise levels are improvement opportunities that individuals can usually do for themselves. Current physical activity level recommended for adults is that they should achieve a total of at least 150 minutes over a week of at least moderate activity which can be activities such as brisk walking, housework and various sports and exercise." Translation Ultra Fail: Ikea Guilty of 'Cuddle Rape'? by TranslationsTV http://ift.tt/18OTcg7 Demonstrates why translation services are a must for any business. A recent story spreading across the internet has revealed the dangers of using online translation tools to promote business products internationally. We take a look at what happened and what businesses should do to avoid embarrassment or ridicule, and potential brand damage. A recent news story reveals that the home furnishings giant, IKEA, has caused much amusement after some of their products Swedish-inspired names didn't translate too well. It is claimed that their "Gosa Raps" pillow - 'raps' being the Swedish for rapeseed -- unfortunately translates to "Cuddle Rape" in English! The problem seems to have arisen due to the use of online translation tools. IKEA have encountered similar difficulties with other products in other countries. A spokesperson for London Translations recently said, "A quick search of the internet will return numerous examples of humorous naming errors. However, it's only funny when it's someone else's marketing budget which is being wasted or reputation being damaged. It's such a shame as for next to nothing firms can check their messages for international appropriateness using services such as our own Validata packages." Mouth Cancer On The Rise - Go See Your Dentist. by The Health Insurance Group http://ift.tt/Jm9hxK Mouth cancer - don;t put off seeing your dentist. A survey has been released suggesting that there has been a dramatic increase in cases of mouth cancer in recent years. This video will explain why this is the case, and what has caused the increase. The survey by the British Dental Health Foundation has suggested that cases of mouth cancer have risen by 50% since the year 2000. Worryingly however, the survey also revealed then three in ten people would not change their lifestyle to avoid developing the disease, even if they knew someone with mouth cancer. Common causes which contribute to the disease are excessive drinking, tobacco use, poor diet. 2,500 people die from the disease every year, though it is much more easily prevented if diagnosed early, with survival rates reaching as high as 90%. However, rates plummet to 50% if left untreated. Carol Porter, a spokesperson for The Health Insurance Group, recently said, "Cancer can often be spotted in its early stages by your dentist during a thorough mouth examination. If mouth cancer is diagnosed early, the chances of a cure are good. However, too many people are left untreated because they do not visit their dentist regular enough for a routine examination. We are passionate about preventative Oral Health care and making high quality dentistry available and affordable for all our clients through a cost effective Dental Insurance or Health Cash Plan". Stress At Work - Are You Hiding From Help? by The Health Insurance Group http://ift.tt/Jm9hxK Stress in the workplace - when are you your own worst enemy? A survey of British employees has revealed that not enough workers are seeking help for their work related stress problems. This video will explain why people are hiding away from help with their mental health issues. A study conducted by health insurers BUPA has found that four out of ten managers suffer depression as a result of word induced stress, while only 12% would take to their superior about their problem. The survey of 6000 employees suggested that a feeling of constant worry is present amongst 51% of managers, 43% worry that the pressure of their work is too great, while 47% often worry about work at home. The survey also found that a manager's stress can also affect their performance at work, as well as hindering the help they can give to their team, with 29% of those surveyed admitting to being too stressed to help with other team member's stress. Brett Hill, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group recently said... Stress is one of the most common causes of long term sickness absence, but is also one of the most difficult problems for a manager to deal with because the wrong approach can make the situation worse for the employee. A high quality Employee Assistance Programme can provide independent, confidential support for the employee while a professional Occupational Health supplier can work closely with managers to help them deal properly with stress related absences. Does Aspirin reduces heart attacks? by The Health Insurance Group http://ift.tt/Jm9hxK Could taking aspirin at night reduce heart attacks? New research has been revealed suggesting that taking an aspirin before going to bed can reduce the risk of suffering from a heart attack in the morning. This video will explain why this is the case. Research undertaken at Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherland involved a trial of 290 heart attack patients. The study revealed that taking one 100mg tablet of aspirin before bed dramatically reduces the chance of suffering a heart attack in the morning. The study also suggested that the morning is peak time for heart attacks, as this is the time when platelets, which lead to blood clots and then heart attacks, are most active in the blood in the morning. However, it is worth noting that these results come less than a month from a warning from experts suggesting that an over use of aspirin could cause internal bleeding. Brett Hill, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group recently said, "Many people have long believed in the health benefits of taking an aspirin a day, and there is strong medical evidence to suggest it can help reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other circulatory disorders. However, any medicine can cause side effects in some people, and we would always recommend our clients seek professional medical advice before taking any regular medication or health supplement." Stress In The Workplace by The Health Insurance Group http://www.healthinsurancegroup.co.uk/ What are the real culprits of workplace stress? New figures have been released suggesting that more than a quarter of British workers feel stressed in the workplace all or most of the time. This video will explain some of the causes for this huge figure. A survey from office provider Business Environment has suggested that one in five British workers have taken time off due to stress. Pressure from senior members of staff, lack of support and unrealistic deadlines have been suggested by the survey as the biggest culprits for causing workplace stress. Stress can lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms for employees. 3% of workers have admitted to having a cigarette to relieve stress, while 6% turn to alcohol. Business Environment have themselves suggested that stress can lead to complications in the wellbeing and health of employees, as well as being detrimental to the business itself through losing the productivity of their workers. Brett Hill, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group recently said... More and more companies are realising the importance of having an effective wellbeing strategy for their workforce. Engaging people in initiatives to improve their health can not only reduce the impact of illnesses like Stress, it can also improve the levels of motivation and commitment among staff as they respond positively to an employer who takes an interest in their wellbeing.
