Hy-Brasil

   Hy-Brasil was an island which appeared on ancient maps as early as 1325 and into the 1800s. In Irish myth, it was said to be clouded in mist except for one day every seven years when it became visible but still could not be reached.

   Hy-Brasil is derived from the name Breasal meaning the High King of the world in Celtic history. The last documented sighting of Hy-Brasil was made in 1872 by Robert O’Flaherty and T.J. Westropp.

Lost Roman roads

    Lost Roman roads and hidden archaeological remains are likely to be uncovered in a new project to map the entire English landscape using state-of-the-art lasers. Around 75 per cent of the country is already mapped.

     Archaeologist David Ratledge, who had been researching Lancashire’s Roman roads for more than 45 years, used the data to find 10 miles of a ‘lost’ Roman road between Ribchester and Lancaster, as well as 10 other routes, river crossings and even a suspected watchtower.
