What Happens When You Die?

So, you take a lot of photographs and you put them online on sites like Flickr for others to see and safely store them away somewhere in the cloud?

That's good, you know where they are, you can log in, you can easily access, re-download and redistribute via the net, but have you ever thought what might happen to your precious images when you die?

It's going to happen at some point lets face it. Your direct debits are cancelled, your 500 PX site gets neglected, the same with Flickr, and maybe your website too, your accounts gets suspended, and then what? Pfft...gone, all those moments, deleted or inaccessible.

You didn't give your loved ones the passwords to your online storage or your Facebook/Google +/Pinterest? Too bad, your friends and family won't be able to access those either.

These days it seems as if you don't have an online presence, then you don't exist, and if you think logically about what I have just said that could be the case.

I have started keeping an offline record so that if it does all go 'pear shaped' my family can access my accounts get those moments back, I also make a point of printing many, many pictures and storing them so that they can be viewed by generations to come.

I am not saying that they are that good, but from a family history viewpoint to me and mine they are important in our life story, and perhaps the only physical memento of me for someone who cares to cling on to after I have gone.

So, have you considered what would happen to your pictures when you die?... Just sayin'

Sailor Strap - Bold, Cool, Comfortable.

Some time ago I was contacted by Rafal who runs and makes Sailor Strap, a bespoke camera strap company from Warsaw, Poland asking me if I would field test one of his products and become a brand ambassador. I agreed, and after some pretty simple communication between us I was able to order a specific strap, tailored to the colour scheme of my camera. 

As most will be aware, I mainly shoot with a Fuji X100s, this is protected by a black leather half case with red stiching detail. I asked if my strap could reflect this, and lo and behold a short while later it arrived in the post. The perfect accessory for my beloved X100s.

Before it arrived I was concerned about the comfort of a strap that had no wide pad for the neck area, but I needn't have worried, the rope from which it is made was lovely and thick whilst being flexible. The strap was perfect in length for either wearing over the neck or on the shoulder, and the detailing looked tight and secure, holding the rings in place, but the real test of a product is when it is in use.

Since I have been using the strap I have been to a lot of different locations, abandoned buildings, the Norfolk Coast and the South of France and I can honestly say that it has been faultless, as an added bonus the strap is thick enough to protect it any kind of cutting in one of those dreaded 'camera snatch' scenarios. Always handy!

I always feel the mark of a truly outstanding bit of equipment is that if once it is fitted you forget it's there, then it is doing it's job flawlessly... this is one such bit of kit. Well done Sailor Strap!

Making An Exhibition Of Yourself

I have been AWOL of late in terms of my posts on here, but with good reason. I have just set up my first proper solo photographic exhibition which debuts tomorrow at The Dandy Horse, Norwich and runs for a month.

Now I'm a pretty confident person, but I found this quite a nerve wracking experience. By putting up 21 images for people to view, I have also put up a little bit of me, a little bit of my vision, and where in daily life I might be slightly guarded on some matters, here, exhibiting my work, I have left myself exposed to criticism.

But to my mind, that is how this gig works. You can't please everyone, and in reality, the reason I take photographs in the first place is to please myself, however there is still a bit of me that likes what I do to be appreciated and hopefully that may happen. If it doesn't then negatives will be turned into positives and I will learn from the experience.

I have already learnt so much, from leaving adequate time for the prints to be finished, to spacing and hanging the images in the right sequence to create the right feel. Just as in other areas of life I am hopefully developing to make things better for the next time... yes there will probably be a next time.
