Unappreciated platonic relationships from Yuri on Ice:

Hiroko and Viktor: imagine Hiroko immediately accepting Viktor as her son, showing him Yuuri's baby pictures, and constantly asking about when she's going to get grandbabies

Phichit and Yuuri: best friends who are supportive and highkey protective over each other, they also have a wild college past that Yuuri mostly doesn't remember due to being incredibly drunk those nights they went out to party

Yuuri and Yurio: Yurio slowly opening up to Yuuri, realizing that he can always count on Yuuri to be discreet if he ever has something he wants to talk about

Now, Viktor was never one of the best at dealing with emotions.  It wasn’t that he meant to be insensitive, or that he was unobservant, he just… didn’t know what to do with them.  So, a lot of times, he would divert attention from the actual problem and pretend it didn’t exist.  That wouldn’t work in this instance.

He’d thought his newly adopted charge was settling in well enough, but then he went… sullen.  Almost unresponsive.  Viktor couldn’t read the child, and Yuri was certainly less than forthcoming about what was bothering him.  He was so young, and had lost so much already.  Viktor had to wonder if the child had the same problems talking about emotions that he had.

It was an impulse, that he was sure of, but Viktor had good luck with impulse decisions.  He’d seen the kitten while looking for supplies for Makkachin, and it reminded him of how much having a pet had helped him.  So, after spending what was likely way too much, Viktor went about setting up things for the kitten in secret.

When everything was ready, Viktor quietly snuck up behind the boy, knelt down, and gently placed the kitten in Yuri’s lap.  The way the child’s face lit up made it all worth it, and Viktor couldn’t help but take advantage of the opening to wrap his arms around Yuri.  Warm hugs couldn’t be avoided.

Yuri found a large pair of arms engulfing him from behind. He turned his head to see Viktor pulling him in close. The blond held the kitten in close making sure he didn’t squeeze the poor thing. Instead of what had become his usual scorn the child smiled back at him.

“Vitya, the kitty is so soft, and warm and so, so cute,” The blond beamed.

The child lifted the cat up into so that it’s face was beside Viktor’s. The cream colored kitten let out a soft mew like meow as it stared back at him. He lowered it back into his lap before staring back up at him.

“Can I keep it?” He asked pleading with those large green eyes of his. “I’ll take care of it and feed it and play with it and we can read books together. Please Vitya, please.~”

Viktor felt his heart melt a little at that smile, it almost distracted him from the fact that he was apparently ‘Vitya’ now, and no longer ‘Papa’ for the moment.  While he wasn’t especially fond of it, he knew Yuri needed to adjust on his own.  So, instead of reacting to it, he just smiled at Yuri and the kitten.  Besides, who couldn’t smile at the adorable sight?

Chuckling, Viktor pulled back to sit next to Yuri, crossing his legs comfortably.  There was a small, nagging thought in his brain that told him he probably should have called Yuuri and asked him about the new pet first, but that thought was pushed away as he watched the pair.  Makkachin was older and much more mellow, she would adjust well to a kitten.  She’d done well enough with the larger ‘kitten’ so far.

“Of course, Yurochka.”  Viktor reached out, ruffling the child’s hair gently.  “I brought it home for you.  Pets help when things aren’t so great.  But.”  Viktor held up his hand, being serious despite his smile.  “You will need to learn to care for it, Yuuri and I will only help so much.”
