There’s something yuri going on in this hospital

I feel like such a bad Baran fan sometimes because when I first ‘met’ her character I really hated her.

At the time of season 2’s release I was having a lot of trouble with a new manager at work who came in and only wanted to do things her way and didn’t give any explanation as to why. I can admit that that was the main bias for my ‘hate’ of Baran’s character; because she resided me too much of my real life. But what I didn’t realize until literally 10 minutes ago is that Baran’s character and my journey of hating her to absolutely loving and empathizing with her is exactly how relationships in my life work.

As I have said before, I am on the autism spectrum which makes small social settings and/or deep relationships hard to navigate and control (among other things) so having a lot of people in my life can be hit or miss. I come off as extremely energetic, eager, and bubbly (because I am) which may not jive well with certain people and in certain situations. Also taking into account the differences in how I create and maintain conversations and other minor social difficulties that are hard to mask depending on the moment. These factors most often lead to a good amount of people I first meet to be weary of me, or even sometimes to hate me upon first glance. It’s only the people that have managed to stay in my life for a long time or for the people that actually have true kindness, empathy, and patience for others that truly see me for who I am.

Baran Al-Hashimi first presented to me as a slightly overbearing boss who came in suddenly and wanted nothing more but to do things her way, regardless of other people’s habits and feelings. This, as I have learned over time, was a complete false judgement of her character. She was literally just a doctor trying to find her footing in a new workplace that honestly was quite toxic. She was just a girl trying her best. I was just a girl trying my best.

I was a person who once hated Baran when she literally did nothing wrong, just like many others have done with me for all of these years. With time, patience, and keeping a surprisingly open mind (something that is not easy for me normally), I have truly learned to love Baran and to appreciate her little character quirks, like others have also done for me. I am thankful that I have people who know me for me now and am thankful to unintentionally discover things about myself through a character that I originally didn’t want to see myself in.

I wasn’t hating Al-Hashimi—I was hating all of the negative traits and memories I associated with her story and character; a story that it more close to home that I ever would’ve thought.
