Doesn’t anyone else hold a piece of plastic and feel immense pain. I throw some away and think about where it will end up. What pain it will cause something or someone else. It hurts so so much to think that way but it made me reconsider everything that I use. And everything I throw away. I am very grateful for the tools I am given, plastic included. It has its uses. But is the best use really .. plastic bags.. plastic toys. Other things people pass on to me. I don’t want it. Someone else looks at these items for what they are. Was I really raised so differently that I don’t see it the way someone else does. Someone sees a toy and smiles, it’s nice. Usually I do too. But every once in a while I see it in that different way. And it hurts.

To be honest I didn’t really think about the effects of plastics until only a few years ago, not consciously anyways. I believed in the false narrative we’ve been fed that plastics can be recycled effectively and that they are being recycled and that if we all just recycle all our plastics things will be ok. I didn’t realize until my freshman year of college, working with an environmental chemist, that there are only 7 types of plastic out of the hundreds that exist that can even be recycled at all. 7. That’s it.

Not even mentioning the fact that new kinds of non-recyclable plastics are being created every day and that mixed plastics can’t even be recycled at all. That means that if you have a water bottle in which the cap is made of 1 plastic and the bottle is made of another, it can’t be recycled at all. It can’t be taken apart and repurposed separately. It’s just going to a landfill.

I say all of this as a disabled person who has no choice but to use plastics I know will harm the environment. I hate that I have to rely on synthetic fabrics because I can’t afford natural ones, thereby releasing microfibers into the water every time I do laundry. I hate that I have to rely on frozen meals, many of which are packaged with plastic, because my fibromyalgia makes it difficult to cook often and if I don’t have ready made meals on hand I just won’t eat.

What I’ve learned is that blaming yourself doesn’t help, as hard as it can be not to. It’s what plastics manufacturers want you to think, that it’s your fault for having to use plastics instead of their fault for making it one of the only affordable materials for so many people. Plastics can be used in unnecessary ways, and if you can afford to use something more sustainable that’s great but it’s not your fault if you have to use plastics, or hell, even if you don’t expressly have to but if it makes things easier for you. It can be hard to not blame yourself for these kinds of things but I guarantee it is no one individuals fault that we’re in this mess.
