Application Presentation

Hello,

This past week, I presented an application to my BIS 315 class. I believe that I was able to effectively introduce and describe my app, and hope that I motivated people to download it.

I believe that prior to my presentation, my presenting skills were good. However, I noticed some kinks that I would like to fix in the future. I tried to be conscious with my hand movement, as it can sometimes be distracting if I move them too much while I speak. I attempted to keep them still throughout my speech, but still struggled with being calm and avoiding rapid hand movement. I hope that I can find the strength to relax, keep my composure, and do a better job in my client presentation in a few weeks.

I plan on practicing this aspect of my public speaking in the near future, I would love to hear some critique or suggestions from my peers who viewed my presentation on the Beepr music app!

Client Project

Good afternoon,

I just wanted to use today's blog to discuss some lessons that I have learned from collaborating with my client. I have been fortunate to work with PR Fitness, a personal training company that is operated and owned by my cousin in Grand Rapids.

Some challenges that I have had include not being able to meet in person. I really wish that I had the chance to brainstorm with my client in person, to put together higher quality content. Meeting virtually has been effective, but I believe that in person meetings could be more beneficial. I have also had the challenge of working with a relative. Due to being related and very close, I think that our ideas have been very one-sided as we are afraid to disagree with one another. It can be hard to set aside outside relations to complete our goal to the best of our ability.

While I have faced challenges, I also believe that this project is going very well from my point of view. I have learned so much through the Hootsuite modules and have been able to provide helpful advice to my client. I look forward to seeing the progress that we have made once my project is complete.

Client Project Status Update

Hello,

I just wanted to post this blog as a status update to my client project progress. I have been collaborating with PR Fitness, a personal health and fitness company based in Grand Rapids, MI.

While PR Fitness has created a sufficient following in the Grand Rapids region, it has been a goal for us to expand their following to areas across Michigan such as Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Detroit. This is a large goal for this company and will take months to successfully spread their customer base throughout the state. As of today, most of our growth has occurred in the Ann Arbor region. Expanding to areas such as Ann Arbor is very promising as it shows that we have collectively been able to expand our social media awareness.

PR Fitness excels with posting quality and consistent Instagram content, which is a huge credit to the growth of the company on social media. I am extremely appreciative for the social media coordinator at PR Fitness, he has made this collaboration work extremely well and I look forward to see where the growth of PR Fitness goes on social media.

The Social Organization Ch.3-5

After reading Ch.3-5 from The Social Organization, I have learned many tools to help me in the future. These lessons will be crucial in my future career as I can become an asset to my organization through providing tips from these chapters.

One specific lesson that I will bring to my future organization is to ensure that their social media is geared towards achieving a purpose with the technology that is available. Many people get caught up in the technology rather than the message that they want to represent. Building an online community through a purpose is crucial to the success of a business online.

The text describes how a business can represent their purpose through collaborative communities in the workplace. Employees collaborating and working together will contribute towards success for the organization. After reading the text, I believe that I properly understand the importance for a collaborative community to online business functions such as social media. I now know the importance that it has on a company and how it can be accomplished through a vision.

Hootsuite Module 4/Client Project

Hello,

After learning lessons from Hootsuite Module 4, I feel like I am more prepared to help my client expand their online community. Through previous evaluations of my client as well as discussions with them, we have determined that their social media team is doing an excellent job. The content that they provide is both interesting and consistent. However, a large online community is a goal that they have fell short on.

One lesson that I learned from Hootsuite is to expand the brand awareness to different social media platforms. Although my client excels on Instagram, we have developed a strategy to expand their online community on Twitter and YouTube. Another lesson that I learned was the Brand Advocacy Program tool. I plan on mentioning this to my client in our next meeting, with hopes that they will be willing to use this tool to grow their brand. With this tool, my client will be able to expand out of the Grand Rapids area and serve customers throughout Michigan!

The Legal Side of Big Data

Hello,

After watching the video, The Legal Side of Big Data, I have a better understanding of the legality behind Big Data. Prior to the video, my understanding for Big Data was that much of it was an invasion of privacy and perhaps even illegal.

What should businesses be aware of when using big data?

I have learned that Big Data company's must ensure that a contract is in place that states a company owns the data it has collected. The implementation of a contract is intended to prevent data from getting into the wrong hands. Businesses must be aware of the confidentiality involved in collecting the data and must protect the data from getting in the hands of a party that is not authorized or responsible to receive the information. I have also discovered that these companies must be aware to protect the data collected as a Trade Secret, to keep information confidential.

What should consumers be aware of?

In my opinion, consumers should be aware of their presence on any sort or internet mode. However, it is difficult to avoid from your information being accessed by Big Data company's in the society that we live in today. My suggestion would be to try to be conscious that almost anyone may be able to view whatever content I share, to prevent private information from being accessed. Unfortunately, I still do not think we can avoid Big Data company's from accessing our personal information.

What is the best way to balance the opportunities and threats presented by the development of big data? 

I believe that the best way to balance opportunities and threats presented by Big Data is to establish some sort of agency or committee that tracks and surveys Big Data collection. This would be an incredibly difficult task, but is worth the challenge if it means less personal data being shared with the wrong types of crowds. I think that an agency tracking this type of activity is the best solution to balancing opportunities with threats as it could present a barrier to data collected using Big Data from being abused or shared illegally.

Hootsuite Module 3

Hello!

After performing the training on Hootsuite Module 3, I feel as if I have learned a set of tools to help me with my client project. The training helps evaluate your current client's social media status on several platforms. From there, I can develop a social media audit to create points of improvement from their current social media content.

Once I have studied and properly evaluated my client's social media pages, I believe that the module has prepared me to be able to put forth suggestions and points moving ahead for the company's social media. I will need to discuss a budget with my client so we know what is in our scope of improvement as specific tools and resources may need to be utilized.

Through learning tips on Hootsuite Module 3, I have a better understanding of what my client needs to improve and perhaps even eliminate within their social media content. I look forward to sharing my collaboration with my client soon!

I would like to spend todays Blog discussing and interesting article that connects Social Media use to Mental Health. I believe that this is a very crucial topic in today’s society as we are troubled with mental health issues throughout our country.

This article is based off of a study that discusses how social media is responsible for aggravating mental health problems. With social media being part of everyone’s daily activities, people spend countless hours interacting online. The study concluded that using social media can have a detrimental effect on psychological health of its users. The extent for social media’s harm on mental health is still unknown; however, people who face mental health problems are often consumed in social media in negative ways.

Social media is a relatively new topic that is becoming incredibly popular and studies still need to be conducted to discover it’s true impact on mental health. While there is not much knowledge on the trend, I found this study very interesting. I have always been curious on the correlation between these two topics, and have discovered that it appears to be a negative relationship based on the studies in the article that I viewed. Personal Social Media Consultant

Throughout this course, we will be learning more and more beneficial information about social media in the professional world. In return, we can take lessons learned and apply them to our own social media presence. I plan on applying a few lessons to my current social media presence in order to improve my professionalism for the future. I first want to plan on avoiding posting or reposting explicit content to my social media accounts. I also want to avoid making comments on controversial topics through social media. As a step of action, I have deleted any post that I do not want a future employer seeing. I also want to start posting more professional content. This means posting career updates or current life updates that seem appropriate for specific social media platforms. I can improve my content through being conscious to what I post as well as applying lessons and strategies learned from this course to any post that I make. I also plan to start being more active on LinkedIn, a social media platform specified for creating and building professional business relationships. I can begin being more active by interacting with my peers through comments and reposts as well as by posting career updates or news that I find interesting. I am grateful to learn social media skills this semester so that I can help improve not only my social media presence but my client’s as well.

Social Media Consultant Qualities

After watching the Social Media Consulting Lecture, I believe that I can narrow down three very important qualities to have as a social media consultant. The first skill would be creativity, as a consultant in this area it is important to be able to help your client through providing creative and innovative ideas that are pleasing to viewers. Possessing this quality will be crucial to producing quality social media content. Another skill that is valuable as a social media consultant is being capable to problem solve. When you are working with a client, issues may often arise, and you must be able to persevere and come up with a solution. Problems that occur may not always be defined, so being prepared to face challenges, and having a positive mentality when facing them is important. A third quality that I believe is important is patience. Clients may vary, meaning some may get frustrated and may be harder to work with compared to others. It is crucial to be able to be patient with your client so that you can provide the best advice and help produce the best content in any circumstance!

Electronic Surveillance and Data Gathering

After reading” The Internet's Original Sin” and watching Maciej Ceglowski's talk, I am much more aware on how internet business models influence surveillance and data gathering on the internet. Quite frankly, I am scared of technology after understanding the capabilities that data gathering possesses as well as the severe implications that exist of this data were to be sold to the wrong person. With advertisements being able to survey data, we are always under surveillance when we use electronic devices since we see ads everywhere. Whether we give consent to it or not, our privacy and personal information is constantly being viewed, processed, and sold by businesses and databases. While we think that using internet services may be free, we are paying the cost in giving up our privacy to any database that views our electronic activity online.

While I understand that the internet is a business and businesses must find a way to earn profit from a service that does not always charge its’ users, I believe that there needs to be regulations. Organizations have codes of ethics and certain values, so I think that they must act morally and follow these guidelines. Without provisions on privacy invasions, there is no way to avoid surveillance and data gathering in today’s world.

Big Data and Information Privacy

After watching the 60 minutes segment, “The Data Brokers” I can relate Big Data to information privacy. We live in a world where we post content online and give up information about ourselves without even knowing it. It’s hard to comprehend what little privacy that we have. Big Data is a huge reason why privacy is so limited nowadays due to the value that data holds. Business’s find that the data of the customers is more valuable than the product that they provide. This is what makes Big Data such a powerful tool due to the value it can hold to any database, and it is very easy for the wrong types of people to get ahold of it. With such a limit in privacy once you post online, Big Data collects that information and can correlate it to anything in your life. When people access this information with ill intentions, your personal life can be displayed to all different types of crowds. As a result, your career, relationships, and dignity could all be harmed. This is discomforting to know that much of my personal information can be viewed by those that I do not know or want to know my personal information. It is also frustrating to know that businesses that I provide personal information will be more than willing to sell the data received from my contribution to that business.

In terms of defense to this invasion of privacy, I do not believe that there is one other than to just stop using electronics in general. While that tactic could help, I do not think it is manageable as it is imperative to have some sort of technology to be able to communicate and interact with peers and loved ones for all individuals in society. After viewing this video, I know that there is no way to prevent Big Data from being able to access your personal information. I fear that this issue will only get worse in the future.

Responses to Sherry Turkle and Louis C.K. Videos, Social Media

After viewing two videos regarding social media topics, I noticed a great similarity between the views represented. Both Sherry Turkle and Louis C.K., they each greatly portrayed the idea on how social media technology brings a feeling of loneliness to its users. The ability for social media and phones to make one feel alone is incredibly interesting, which leads me to believe how detrimental it can be to one's mental health. Social media creates these stereotypes on who we should be or who we should act/look like, which causes people to feel self-conscious. I think that so many problems in our society derive from the widespread use of social media. As stated in each video, social media is taking over our lives and causing us as a society to rely on it for entertainment or information. When social media is such a huge part of our lives, I believe that the negativity involved within in directly spreads into our own lives. We cannot allow our phones to prevent us from living healthy lives and being happy!

Social Media Experiment

Hello,

Over the past few days, I have conducted an experiment on myself concerning the amount of time I spend on social media. I began my logging the total hours spent on my phone on a social media application. My results were surprising, as I logged a total of 2 hour and 22 minutes solely on social media feeds over a 24 hour period. For my experiment, I decided to take a 4-hour break from social media during the peak of my phone usage, which was 1 P.M. to 5 P.M. This seemed like an easy task to do; however, that was not the case. I was incredibly bored throughout this time period and had no clue what to do. I figured that playing video games would solve my boredom but felt that playing video games was the wrong thing to occupy myself during an experiment like this. Instead, I started reading a book that has sat on my desk for some time, which actually sparked a great interest in what I was reading. I am incredibly frightened on how much of my entertainment was solely based on scrolling through social media. I discovered that I do not do much more on my phone other than use social media. After my experiment was over, I immediately grabbed my phone to see what I missed out on. It was amazing how left out I felt after missing 4 hours’ worth of social media nonsense. While I do use social media as a source of news very often, the other types of content that I view can certainly wait 4 hours to be seen. As I reflect, I have decided to finish the book that I began to read, dedicating 30 minutes every night towards reading. I also plan to stay aware of my screen time and limit the amount of hours spent on social media. I hope that this may encourage my peers who struggle from a similar issue, to take time out of your day to read a good book!

Clay Shirky TED Talk

Hello,

After watching Clay Shirky's TED Talk, How social media can make history, I have gained in knowledge on the capabilities of social media. I was informed on how social media has transformed throughout the years. Different platforms of news have migrated to the internet, being able to represent several different types of point of views. This in return has increased the likelihood of disagreements. I think that the transformation of news to the internet has led to a tremendous impact on an increase in arguments. Information can be very biased and incorrect, which translates to people thinking a certain way based on being informed poorly. This has helped me understand the capabilities of social media with being able to provide several platforms of news and thus countless opinions.

My name is Vince Perez and I am a senior student at Central Michigan University (CMU). I am currently enrolled in the college of business administration. While I am very dedicated to my studies, I am also a member of the Division 1 wrestling program at CMU. In the future, I would like to work for a sports organization at any level in an area of management. I understand that this takes hard work and commitment to earn a management position in any organization and I look forward to the challenge.
