“Uhh.. yah it’s not.” She said with a little chuckle. “I must have missed the part where this was a costume party. So this is what we used to wear when we would go hunting or into battle.” She explained.
“Haven’t had to do that in a while and I already had it on hand so I figured it would be better then nothing.”
“Well hey, you dressed up and that’s all that matters!” Wanderer replied before pointing off toward one of the large windowed walls. “The royal delicacies are over there, I’d suggest going nuts since everything is free! Somnus here is a sucker for the banana pudding.” Wanderer added whilst giving the Changeling king a friendly nudge.
“And with all those caramel clusters you’ve been snatching and scarfing down I’m going to have to start calling you candy ass~!” Somnus chittered back as he returned the nudge. “What about you Twib, you got a treat that you’re a sucker for?”
“Hey, be nice.” Zephyr jested.. He headed over towards Somnus, Wanderer, and Twib, having left the helmet of his royal guard costume at a place to mark it as his. “Good to see you! And I’m not sure we’ve met…” Zephyr looked over Twib, for a brief moment. “I’m Zephyr- pleased to meet you.” He set down his dish of food at his table, and held out a forepaw in greeting to Twib.
He was drawing a bit of attention with his costume armor- some ponies at the party were wondering if there was a new guard in Moon City.
She reached out and took his with her own giving it a gentle squeeze and a nod. “Baruta Twib. Call me Twib. All these snacks are making me a little peckish.” She said looking at the spread
Meanwhile a deep fiery red coated griffon? pony? both? approached the group from the other side. Tilting his head left and right, Vindicar looked the dressed griffon over, before stepping closer. “Hey, Somnus. Mind introducing me to your friend?” On a closer look one could spot several irregularities in hippogriff’s looks - the coat color was likely not his natural one, as some undercolored feathers suggested. The hybrid didn’t have neither griffon crest no pony mane, giving him a bald look, but was sporting a tiny, almost hidden horn on his forehead. The way he moved suggested a good physical condition, even though his stance was rather relaxed.
Somnus blinked in confusion as he stared at the costumed Griffon before recognizing him. “Oh, OH! Vindicar! Sorry, took me moment there. This is Twib. Twib, this is Vindicar, he’s a captain of our towns royal guard.” Somnus explained with a nod towards the hippogriff. “Glad you could make it tonight buddy!”
As Somnus spoke Wanderer took the liberty of reliving one of the passing waiters of a few drinks on his tray. “You know, I’m not normally one for wine. But Nightmare clearly broke out the good stuff for tonight. I think it would be rude NOT to drink it!” Wanderer exclaimed before taking a hefty swig and passing the other glass over to Somnus who took hold of it with his magic. The waiter stood nearby in case anyone else wanted a drink.
Twib eyed the hippogryph as he joined the group. Assuming at first he was a strange gryphon in a costume but not feeling sure. Giving him a nod as she was introduced. “Pleasure to meet you Vindicar.” She said with a little smile.
She reached over herself as she saw the Stallion take the wine. Grabbing one for herself. She looked down into it and almost immediately regretted picking it up. Having spent so long on her outfit that she hadn’t eaten anything. This could be bad if she didn’t play her hand right. Glancing at the waiters hopeing one would be nearby with something hearty to eat.
“Boy oh boy I like a drink.” She said with a little awkward chuckle. Holding it up and taking the smallest of sips.
Hippogriff chuckled. “Nice to meet you too, m’am. And yes, Her Majesty rarely hosts any celebration - but when she does, she doesn’t skimp on refreshments. Enjoy yourself!”
Vindicar nodded politely and turned towards Somnus. He shot the changeling a quizzical look and quickly mouthed ‘guard captain?‘

thequeen-and-thecity:
As it was customary in Nightmare’s domain, Nightmare Night was celebrated throughout the City. While at first glance it didn’t look that much different from the most Equestrian cities, this holiday was taken more seriously by a few sworn followers of Nightmare… albeit those who simply moved into the City for the opportunity it provided tended to not share this sentiment. Either way, the decorations were up - both more traditional pony version of stuffed spiders and carved pumpkins, or more serious ones, usually consisting of the image of Mare-in-the-Moon or reptilian eye watching the passerby. What was less obvious is that not all monstrous and unusual creatures going around on their business were wearing costumes.
Of course, the main party (or more likely a costumed ball) would happen in the Castle proper, hosted by the ebony mare herself…
Zephyr had been invited, as a friend of Sir Vindicar’s, and as he lived not too far away. As the party began, a figure walked in. At first glance, it appeared to be Sir Vindicar, but there was something off.
The truth was, it was Zephyr, wearing a rather convincing replica of the knight’s armor. To those who weren’t familiar with the detailing on the armor, it appeared to be the real deal- and almost functional, despite being made out of intricately painted wood and paper, with aluminum chainmail where required- both for weight’s sake and otherwise. He did wear a helmet as well, also well detailed.
To those who were familiar with the armor and how it was pieced together, as well as how it was detailed and shaped, it was very obviously a fake- pieces which were separate on the actual set were fused on this piece, and other minor inaccuracies and details made it glaringly obvious to a scrutinizing eye that it was merely a costume, and nothing more.
In short, Zephyr was wearing armor that looked realistic enough to be a costume, but not realistic enough to pass convincingly as royal guard armor.
Which was the plan, of course.
Hippogriff actually did a double take as he spotted Zephyr come in… and shot a quizzical glance at Mythic. Whoever, his friend was preoccupied, so Vindicar was left alone with the mystery. “Okay… how in Tartarus didn’t they stop you at the entrance?” Vin asked in exasperation as he trotted up to Zephyr. “That replica looks close enough to count as impersonation attempt, you know…” He shook his head a bit. That certainly was something he did not expect. “That’s damn good work. Did you make it yourself?”
“Yeah! I had a bit of help from Polaris, he takes good notes and helped with the colors, and I had someone else help me with the fabrication and everything. I even found the right color of aluminum chain mail in the Republic- they go all out in some places for Nightmare Night.” Zephyr beamed.
“As for entering, I let them examine my costume. If you know where to look, it’s obviously a fake, and I got a compliment and a stern warning not to go anywhere I shouldn’t, as someone might classify it as an attempted infiltration.” Zephyr nodded.
“So, which way to the food?” Zephyr asked, with a chuckle.
Wanderer was beaming as he entered the ballroom. “I’m not going to lie, I’m kinda glad I let you pick the costumes this year!” Wanderer squeed as he looked up at his husband. A wide toothy smile on his face. “You did remember to send out our plus one invitation right?”
The gryphon had been busy with her delivering and such this time of year and was all over the place. Relatively new to the pony culture she didn’t know that a costume would be something she should have prepared until it was pretty close to the actual holiday. Needless to say she had to throw something together last minute and decided to wear some grabs from her cultures past.
“Geez I hope no on thinks I’m here to hunt them.” She said arriving at the party. Her garb that of the hunters and warriors of her people. Strips of leather and satchels. War paint that she whipped up from fruits at the market.
Still surprised to have been invited back in the first place she looked for her … friends?
“Just follow the delicious smell, Zephyr,” Vin chuckled. “You can’t miss it.” A motion in the corner of the eye attracted hawk’s attention, and he turned in time to see a female griffon. Her colors were vaguely familiar, even though her costume was totally not. In fact, hippogriff thought it’d be something out of a Daring Do book. Trying to remember where he could have seen her, Vindicar was too slow to realize he was staring at her rather blatantly.

Hey, bird-pone. How are things?
“In one word? Busy.” The knight sighed. “I’m starting to miss old times when all I had to do is patrol the Everfree.”
Hippogriff’s limited ability to dissemble and maintain a calm and patient appearance has been put to good use lately, as he found himself dealing with requests, complains and inquires towards the Order that happened to backlog on Starbuck’s desk. And, more importantly, with assorted creatures that were the source of that.
As such, more than once Vindicar returned home smelling not of wilderness or city streets, but of ink and paper dust.
Hedgerow-speak might do you some good in the Everfree. Could I maybe tutor you in some elementary linguistics?“
Birdpony blinked, confused. “Hedge what now?”
~“Hedgerow”~ he spoke in Equestrian. “I could teach you to keep in harmony to those in the Everfree. And a few others if needed.”
“Never heard of it…” Vin sighed. “But, well, you know how well your attempt to teach me English went. Thanks for the offer, though.”
“Well, do you know *he makes a series of bird calls* at least, yeah?”
Hippogriff deflates visibly. “Ink. I only speak Griffon and Equine… and a tiny tidbit of what you taught me. And I only learned pony tongue more or less properly after living a few months among native speakers. I just don’t have the innate grasp you do.”
“Sorry. I meant more native bird talk. That would help you so much in learning what goes on. He seemed to think as he met eye to eye with the hippogriff. “It might work better if you were close to the source.” he held a vial of opinicus serum.
Hippogriff tilted his head. “How would that help? After all, potion effects are transient by nature…”
“Erm… You’re right…” Ink put the vial away. “Oh, duh! Why dont I just act as as a translator?”
“That’s a good idea, at least for the time being,” birdpony nodded. “Hopefully I will grasp the basics eventually. Thanks for the offer, buddy - even though I’ll probably have to stay within the City for a while for now.“

How is fire bird doing?
“Ask him? Since Canterlot is still standing, I guess he is content with his life.”
May I brush your horse body?
“No.”
Do you wear horseshoes?
“I do when I know I will have to traverse particularly rough terrain. While the hoof itself is solid, it can still be chipped, and underhoof is more vulnerable. But within the City limits, I rarely bother,” Vindicar shook his head. “Of course, that only applies to when I’m out of armor. My armor set includes gauntlets and boots of sorts to protect my limbs.”
Does your name have a meaning? Or is it just the name of your species in some other gryphon's case?
“No, it’s my name. Even though half of the Stonewings never bothered to use it, preferring to call me ‘halfbreed’,” hippogriff snorts derisively. “It seems to share the root with old tongue word ‘vindicta’, which means ‘revenge’ or ‘retribution’... I’m unsure why my mother chose it. If she wanted me to avenge someone, she never told me that.“
What are your personality strength and weaknesses?
“Hmmm. I’m not sure. Especially about strengths...
I like to think I’m reliable. If you are my friend, you can come to me, and I will listen, and try to help if I can. If you are not... well, you can come anyway.
I also like to think of myself as independent. I make my own judgements, and only trust blindly those who’se values are proven to be same or similar to mine.
However, I might need to learn to rely on others more. Also, I tend to dodge conflict, even when being assertive would be better. It also means I can be hard to persuade, because I might change the subject and keep my own opinion. I do not think it’s a good thing.
Plus, I had nearly ran into a situation where my own understanding of honor could force me to act against those I love. That’s a conflict I don’t know how to solve.
Does it answer your question? If not, you might ask my friends instead. They would be able to judge more objectively.”
