Threw some paint onto a 3d printed kitty for my mom as a quick side project
Huh I've procrastrinated on this long enough my paint water cup went empty purely through evaporation
Well let's try and get back to it
Making progress on the lighting and shadows. I've had lots of things I tried, didn't like, covered it up, tried something else, didn't like that etc., so the progress has been slow. I've got a direction in my mind now, though, so it should go faster
On the other hand, Silksong just came out so maybe it won't be faster right away...
Alright, all the basic colours are laid down! The hair, the clothing, the everything. Now I'll get onto layering and highlights and shadows to bring accross the incredibly striking lighting from the comic page - which was my inspiration for starting this in the first place - to life on the model here
Applying some colour basecoats to the actual boys now. It's taking me a big longer than I'd like, but the progress is steady. Both got their pants, Falst got his shirt, and both got their skin colours. Now onto their hair and the rest of their clothing
P.S. I found the skin tones kinda tricky to nail, so I'm curious what the public here thinks about how they turned out
Okay, I've begun by airbrushing on the flames since that can get a bit messy. There's more to be done with the fire, but this establishes the base colour nicely
I was kinda worried in the middle if the highlights from the light map were too visible here, but it seems to have mellowed out nicely by the end. I probably still should have drybrush blended them, there's a couple spots now I'll have to touch up later, but it's good enough to work with
Right, light map sketch done (I think)
Now I can put some actual colour onto these boys. Just need to keep my paint choices transparent, to actually use this underlayer.
Still not 100% settled on oil vs acrylic paints, but it will probably be acrylic - I don't think much complicated blending is required, but I could use some crisp lines...
And so it begins
Step 1 is going to be sketching out a map of lighting on the boys, since the lighting in the scene is just so god damn complicated with all the fires and whatnot. I got like maybe 1/3 done on that today
Step 0 of painting the Crustables I think will be not actually painting them at all just yet
I've got this study of object source lighting I did a while ago. I wasn't very happy with the result, so I think now I'll try to make it better as basically another study. This is exactly the kind of lighting that will be present in the boys scene, after all, so it should be a good warmup
Well I did something
I don't know if it's actually better, but I've learned/remembered a thing or two

3d print successful! The boys are now a physical object! Behold!
Next: I shall paint them. Stay posted, I'll keep showing my progress; printing them is the easy part really, the painting is the real project

Bonus: encased in supports
And the supports that used to do the encasing:
Printing Crustables again, this time with supervision
So far so good
Had a go at printing the fancy Crudtables model today. Print failed, although I was mentally prepared for that. First time printing such a complex model
Now on to troubleshooting...
This is how it looks in the slicer btw
It's literally more supports than model:
Calibrated my printer exposure, along with general cleanup. The calibration model is kinda cute ngl

Okay, so a month of fixing my 3d printer later, I am finally ready to pay Hero Forge 20 bucks to let me have the file for this beauty, so that I can bring it into phyiscal existense and paint it oh so pretty (eventually) Because of that last part, all the colours are merely illustrations of intent, but especially ignore the poncho - the colours on the site just bugged out on it for some bizzare reason and I couldn't be bothered to fix it since it won't matter in the end Credit to @narnianvalkyrieofberk for providing the inspiration and proof of concept, as well as generously sharing the actual file to give me a much easier jumping off point. (I was originally just going to do a couple minor adjustments for printability but then got carried away with the detail work)
So my actual project still needs some preparations. In the meantime, doing this for entertainment and also some practice And also courtesy of @spacetronomyfan making it specifically a kittycat
