the apartment was smaller than it looked on camera. it wasn't so small that it felt suffocating, but it was enough to feel cozy, homey in a way yeonjun hadn't felt in a while. it's not exactly easy to emulate such a feeling when you're sleeping in a cramped recording studio.
soobin had been the one to welcome yeonjun inside, greeting him at the door with kind eyes and a smile that almost made yeonjun feel guilty for shitting on him earlier.
but just because the guy was sweet, didn't mean yeonjun didn't still want him out of here. he'd hoped the fried chicken would work as a silent bribe, and seeing the way beomgyu had also not-so-discreetly shooed the man away, it worked.
"So," beomgyu started, speaking around a mouth full of chicken. "have you ever done a twitch stream before?" the pink tint to the gamer's cheeks was so obvious it bordered on painful, a state of undeniable fluster yeonjun found himself more amused with than put off.
he'd never been attracted to the downright obvious type—preferring a stronger man than himself who could take care of him—but even he couldn't deny this was cute.
and maybe taehyun was right, and beomgyu really had been far more nervous to meet yeonjun than he was to meet beomgyu. yeonjun thought it was sweet, especially if beomgyu was a fan like he'd suspected.
that also meant yeonjun had some room to test his limits. and he planned on doing exactly that.
"no, actually, i haven't. you'll be my first," the movement of yeonjun's barstool chair sliding forward was brief, the intent to inch closer to beomgyu obvious enough he was sure it would pull a reaction.
but beomgyu didn't take the bait.
he nodded in response, clearing his throat of spice as he took in the information. "it's really simple. I'm sure you've done a livestream before?" pretending to not be a fan was a difficult feat at minimum. but beomgyu had made a promise to himself not to fuck it up, and because taehyun had so ruefully bailed last minute—going ghost during what was arguably the most important moments of beomgyu's life—he was doing this all on his own.
not even soobin could help, because beomgyu made him promise to stay in his room during the whole thing.
the lack of reaction had been jarring. just a few minutes ago both roommates had been practically drooling at the sight of food—free food, at that—and now beomgyu looked like he couldn't even be bothered to talk.
"I have, yes, just never on twitch, and never gaming, either. my team likes to keep me on our company app...it's like my own social media, in a sense. so I don't get to branch out like this often."
yeonjun had become enchanted by the version of the man he'd seen on his screen, but that version was so far out of sight now that they were alone and without a camera to document any of it.
he understood not everyone was the same online as they were offline, and that usually never bothered him, but he'd been hoping beomgyu wasn't one of those people.
how unfortunate.
taking another bite of his chicken, sauce smeared off of beomgyu's lip and onto his chin. yeonjun broke out into a soft laugh.
"Oh, you have..." nudging the spot at his own lip, yeonjun's eyebrows raised with emphasis. "you have a little…"
"What?" beomgyu, who in his facade of nonchalance didn't get the memo, stared up at yeonjun with honey barbecue sauce on his chin and cheek.
yeonjun laughed again, a sound both equally fond and amused, and leaned in with a napkin. "sauce," he replied, wiping the smear away. "you had sauce on your face."
when the damning realization hit him, beomgyu flushed a deep red and jerked away from the touch like he'd been electric shocked. muttering a soft, "thanks." he wiped his face with the heel of his palm, licking up the remainder of his mess from his lips and simultaneously avoiding the glimmering gaze of yeonjun's amusement.
"no problem."
stupid, stupid, stupid.
so much for beomgyu's cool guy first impression.
the meal wrapped up with an awkward semi-silence. beomgyu cleaned up the leftovers, storing chicken away in the microwave, while yeonjun leaned against the counter, attempting at idle conversation.
the small talk wasn't working and beomgyu hardly made eye contact, which, in way, yeonjun felt he might be overreacting, but it felt deliberately rude—like maybe beomgyu just didn't like him.
everyone did always say to never meet your heroes...
"you can head to my room if you'd like." beomgyu broke yeonjun's train of thought, the spiraling stupor he'd been caught up with interrupted by the deeper rasp of beomgyu's voice.
"it's down the hall, the room with the purple lights." beomgyu nodded his head toward the hallway. "if you hear my roommate, he's probably playing league. sorry about that." the bashful smile yeonjun received was the closest to 'online beomgyu' yeonjun's gotten all afternoon.
"oh, uh…for sure." trudging down the hall, yeonjun tried not to be so…stiff. he could feel beomgyu's eyes on him like a second skin, a feeling that warranted mixed emotions. was beomgyu upset with him? had he said something to give him the cold shoulder?
the urge to text taehyun grew greater, but with a lack of response up to now, yeonjun doubted he'd get any kind of response at all. god damn set-up.
the door to beomgyu's filming room pushed open, a subtle nudge that revealed what yeonjun could only name as an entrance into arcade heaven: colorful LEDs, three separate monitors, two different webcams, an actual countercade of street fighter II, and on the floor was a plush carpet in the shape of a cloud, soft on yeonjun's feet.
but what caught yeonjun's vision the most wasn't any part of the pixelated daydream—it was beomgyu's CD collection in the corner of the room. it stood out more than he'd expect, though maybe because it was his own work, yeonjun felt drawn to it like a magnet. sitting thick and bulky amongst the several other discs, was the sight of familiar colors. pink and gray, and an even more familiar figure hanging off the moving cart.
"is that...?" the soft whisper trailed off into a fond huff of a laugh, eyes creased into crescents as a signed version of his 'GGUM' mixtape came into view. beomgyu tried to hide it behind everything else, yeonjun realized. he wondered why.
before yeonjun could marvel too long about it, the soft padding of beomgyu's footsteps sounded down the hall, and yeonjun abandoned that thread of thought for later.
"you like the room?" beomgyu's voice was soft as he stepped into the room, velvety in a way that made yeonjun's chest warm.
"it's...really colorful," yeonjun smiled, eyes shining as he glanced around once more. the shine of the lights danced off the dark irises of his eyes and resembled stars in the dark, a sight beomgyu thought it was the prettiest he'd ever seen. "much more than my studio. it's all black and white over there."
"sometimes lack of color can help the mind focus better," beomgyu replied, shutting the door behind him and pulling out two chairs yeonjun had familiarized himself with over the last week.
"I read about it in an article once." he motioned for yeonjun to sit, that bashful smile from earlier returning in full force. "you can sit here. I don't start streaming for another hour, usually, so we can work out the basics of the game beforehand. and I'll make you an avatar, so you can have style while we play."
"I don't know what any of that means, so I'll let you take over." yeonjun settled down into the chair, white in color (opposite of beomgyu's, he noticed), but he didn't scoot in to the desk. he'd been too busy watching beomgyu create yeonjun's account and spend a ridiculous amount of 'Robux'—still with no idea what that was—to style yeonjun's new avatar.
beomgyu was caught up muttering something about an 'ugly ass bacon hair' when yeonjun stopped him, placing a hand on the man's arm. "actually, uh, before we start…"
pausing mid avatar makeover (because he'll be damned if The Choi Yeonjun plays roblox with a default avatar.), beomgyu turned to face an equally flustered yeonjun, his eyebrows raised in expectation. "something wrong?"
"I asked Taehyun not to tell you, just because I thought it might be a nice surprise, but..." yeonjun pulled out his phone, opening up the audio file saved to it. "I was hoping I could play my new single for you. It's not often that I get to do something fun like this, so I thought—I don't know, maybe you'd like to hear it before anyone else."
beomgyu's heart dropped to his ass.
he? was about to? listen to yeonjun's single? early? by himself?
he needed to give taehyun a raise.
whoop his ass for bailing last minute, then give him the craziest promotion of his life, just to make sure taehyun would never want to leave.
"…beomgyu?" yeonjun's expression wavered, a hand waving back and forth in front of the other man's face to bring him back to the conversation. beomgyu hadn't realized he was frozen until he'd been snapped out of it.
"Oh—sorry, I—" that prior nonchalance was gone. replaced by a stammering, puppy-like version of the man beomgyu tried so hard not to be, his ears flushed a bright pink and he sank back into his own chair, nodding a little too eagerly. "yeah—yeah—I wanna hear it. yeah. let's do it."
the relief on yeonjun's face was palpable, or at least he thought so, with the way beomgyu's expression softened and he'd slowly inched closer to yeonjun's chair.
"It's called Coma, and no one knows this yet, but it's one of the first songs of mine that I had total control of, like, in the process of making it, so I really hope you like it." yeonjun raised his volume and pressed play.
