I kind of think this works because I relate to both WHA and IDWTBAMG for the different ways they reflect being an artist, WHA for the journey and how you can find bits of yourself in different characters and relate no matter where they are in their progress as witches and IDWTBAMG for being a great allegory for artist burnout and how sometimes that results in a complicated relationship with the thing you used to love doing and distancing yourself from it a bit for your own mental health (which I relate to heavily 😅). Side note: I genuinely think Zira would make a good witch, just maybe don't have her be an apprentice with Coco, I don't think the constant danger would be good for her 😂

Kozue’s hair is purple with a slight blue tint to it. Similarly, her hair is almost the exact same style as Miki and turns even more so during their drive. Purple in rgu is a symbol of corruption, she and Miki are alike in their mutual nostalgia for childhood, but she is a victim who understands how the system works and that their childhood is gone more than he ever could.

Shiori’s hair is purple yet brown enough to pass through the Ohtori halls unnoticeable. But she’s not of course, in the elevator Shiori claims that she’s jealous of Juri and her popularity but we all know that’s not true. In reality, Shiori’s hair doesn’t symbolize that she can’t stand out. It symbolizes that she can’t fit in. Shiori is distanced from everyone else. Even if she can at times fit in, Shiori knows there’s something wrong with her. So like Juri she puts her feelings in a locket, goes on dates boys, pretends to be normal. And maybe this way no one will know how fucked up she is.

Akio’s hair is almost lavender. He makes a polished image of himself via forsaking others (taking photos of Touga and Saionji, revealing Anthy while keeping himself covered, all of episode 33) and their autonomy. He makes Utena a cake, something that doesn’t fit in with traditional “masculine” standards only to say that Utena should remain a girl in the finale. He treats Anthy like she’s something damaged, and that he’s the only one who could ever love her. It’s all a farce of course, there’s nothing wrong with Anthy but he needs to make her appear so in order to distract from the fact that he’s the one wrong. Purity isn’t real, and neither is the prince.

Anthy is the most vivid purple we see in the show. The only times we see her with her hair down are during her late-night talks with Utena, when Akio is raping her, and when she finally leaves Ohtori. There’s an incredible meta that I’ll link when I find it which says that Akio and Anthy both let their hair down when they’re being their “true selves” emphasis on the quotation marks. Akio’s hair is held up by his stupid green orb (green is Saionji’s color) and Anthy’s via curls shaped like roses. Anthy isn’t her “true self” when she’s being abused by Akio. But he needs her to believe that in the same way he needs Kozue and Shiori to believe that they are the problem. Anthy is forced to let down her hair with him, but she does it freely with Utena. Like princes, witches and corruption aren’t real.
