ā¦āµā¦āµā¦ āThere are always bounties to fill,ā She tosses her head slightly, allowing errant strands of her hair to fall back into place, taking in the sight of the guardian with one bright eye. āAlways Kell to kill; always more to do. Rewards await, of course, as long as you're up for the challenge, that is.ā "Plenty of reports from Venus lay claim that there are Kell glimmer to collect, Guardian. It's difficult to take a stroll on our favorite volcano-laden oasis with scum and refuse attempting to maim you. Care to look into it?"
ā ā āĀ
Ā Ā āDo not insult me.ā
Ā Ā The words came out a lot more vicious than he had meant. In fact, in that brief moment, he sounded like his brother and that was enough to help him turn the dial back towards the left. There was nothing about Rasputin that Charles wanted to see in himself that was for damn sure.
Ā Ā āSorry,ā Charlemagne sighed.Ā āThat was out of line, but listen I know how it looks at a brief glance. Iām well aware of that and I donāt need to be told twice that my planet is in ruins.ā As much as he rather not think about it all for that matter, it wasnāt a choice. Mars was not what he left behind, what he held up on his shoulders centuries ago, and it would fail to be for a very long time. Even if the Darkness was defeated as of tomorrow, it would take hundreds of years to rebuild on Earth alone.
Ā Ā āI want to know how bad,ā he continued.Ā āThe details. Whatās still standing and what is long gone. I want to know about me; my core, my bunker, my network. Clearly itās still there otherwise I wouldnāt be standing here right now. Thatās the information I desire.ā
Ā Ā āIn return,ā he placed his hands on his waist, optics flicking over to watch Petraās blade dance in her hands.Ā āMaybe I can help give you a promotion.ā
ā¦āµā¦āµā¦ A twitch at his hostility - a response she didnāt expect in all honestly, but it piqued her curiosity nonetheless, and she bit back an apology under the speculation that perhaps he wouldnāt take it. A love for his home; this they had in common. A love and devotion to a home in ruins, and it would almost seem that their similarities were too eerily similar. Petra would have to commend him for seeking the opportunity they could share - later, when they were more well-acquainted, maybe. So it was a deal that he desired; quid pro quo. The Reef had no holding on Mars - they'd had no desire to before; what did the Queen want with the Cabal and relic iron? But that didn't matter much anymore; the queen was dead, as far as everyone believed. Who was to really know what she wanted anymore. āIf you can manage to skirt the Cabal, then getting an idea could be easier,ā She observed her knife for a moment, catching the reflection of the carnage of skeletal ship remains in the open atmosphere behind them. There were little Kell to recover, now with Skolas in his own personal cell. And without its leader, without any orders, the Corsairs and guard were on full alert; there was little for her here now, besides straggling bounties. Petra twists her knife in her hand against the tip of her index finger, not enough to puncture skin, but enough to feel the pressure. The reflection of light briefly obscures her gaze she's momentarily blinded, then the Reef is no longer in her sight. She looks to her guest through her lashes, one bright eye looking him over curiously, āA promotion you say?ā Then back to her knife, into the starlight that's reappearing and disappearing as she twirls her knife using just a tiny bit of her ability; just enough for show. āI can help you, yes, but without a queen to command us, hardly many will want to leave the Reef, you understand. It's hard to build an army without arms, or anyone to organize them.ā Her knife stops twirling, held in her grip instead as Petra meets the face of Charlemagne with her own, curiosity and a tad of scrutiny in her gaze as she tries to figure just what exactly he's planning, āit will benefit the both of us if we're on the same page, you see.ā Her gaze narrowed in the slightest, "Care to elaborate?"

ā¦āµā¦āµā¦A grin met the hunter before her, a hand settling at her belt with a practiced ease, āAs am I; the hunt becomes difficult from beyond the grave.ā She was sore, tired, battered, yes - but sheād take alive and breathing over that anyday. āThe sentiment, however, is much appreciated, Guardian.ā

Regardless of the betrayal, Mara had been considering bringing Petra back. This⦠incident simply spurred the decision into becoming reality. But it might not be in the way that Petra wishes. She remembers the woman being an eager combatant, someone who enjoyed being in the field and getting her hands dirty. That would not be the case this time, however; Mara needs her in the Reef, away from the danger.
āGood. Because I have an important job for you to do.ā One she hopes Petra will come to appreciate, although she has a feeling the woman will be a little less than thrilled at first. Mara uncrosses her legs and rises from her throne, gesturing for Petra to step aside as she descends the steps of her throne.Ā āCome. There is a lot to talk about, and I would rather not do it here.ā Another wave of her hand, and the guards flanking her are dismissed; she can trust Petra enough to not need them.
āI donāt know how much you have heard since you arrived, but the Reef has sustained far too many lossesā¦ā She still vividly recalls the throne room painted red with her peopleās blood, an uncountable number of guards lying along the catwalk where the treacherous Wolves had slain them.Ā āIāve plans to open the Reef, call upon the debt the Guardians owe me, and they will handle the Wolves for us. There will be no more Awoken blood needlessly spilt this way.ā
ā¦āµā¦āµā¦ The slightest of smugness couldnāt refrain itself from welling at the disgruntlement of her guard as Mara waved them off at her regal descent. Not that she had anything to fear, even if Petra had plans of a coup - Mara could easily take care of herself against much - sheād made it this far, after all. She falls a few inches short of Petraās height, but the confidence and power she took in her stride was enough to make anyone shrink away in at least respect. Petra followed close, mind reeling already - home already, and a job awaiting her! It would be too much to hope, she knew, for field work. It was probably a necessity; sheād been out for so long, some recap in training that would be needed if she hoped to survive what could be coming for them. āDo we have a clear record of how many were lost?ā There was a bite of familiarity at the want for revenge that was too much like after Amethyst wavering from Mara, joining with her own. She hadnāt been here - she could have helped. Petra bites the inside of her lip against herself in a chide, refusing another slip up. An eyebrow perked slightly behind the veil of her bangs, her hands returning to rest at the small of her back as she fell into step with the queen, āThe guardians, your grace?ā Handling the Wolves; a promise of a hunt. Even if she wouldnāt be allowed to participate, the excitement reached a more primitive part of her and sent it chasing after itsā own tail, like when she used to watch Osirisā matches. āIs there speculation of where the Wolves have retreated?ā Give them time to lick their wounds - the Awoken couldnāt have gone down without a decent fight.

Having Petra back in the Reef after her long exile was⦠something. Mara isnāt sure what to think about having her back, but she knows sheās been away from home long enough. And with the recent trouble with the Wolves⦠she needs everyone she can get back in the Reef. Little seems to have changed with the woman; sheās as loyal as ever, and it pleases the Queen to see that.
āGood⦠I am glad your time away from the Reef has done nothing to cloud your judgement or your loyalty,ā she says, the slightest of smiles appearing on her face. It is brief, but itās noticeable; itās no secret that the Queen is fond of Petra. Before her exile, Mara had considered her a part of her inner circle, a place that her brother and Techeuns were in, and few others.Ā āI wish you could have been brought back under less⦠dire circumstances, but I am in need of your help in the Reef again.ā
ā¦āµā¦āµā¦ Sheād expected more - she doesnāt know what exactly. The rest of her emissaries had behaved as Petra had believed they would; she could hear the whispers, see the disdain. There was a lot to make up for, redemption to be earned and savored. Savored like the vast differences in the skies - the dreamy purple of the Reef was something Petra could never miss enough, and yet, upon her escort back, she found it was possible after all. Their Reef, their home - it was surreal. At the small warmth of her smile, Petra averted her gaze - unworthy. She would earn it, sheād decided long ago - earn the grace of Mara, the respect sheād once held in the council. She will have to work twice as hard, double time in comparison to her training with the Techeuns. Sheād cut down a hundred Wolves by her own blade if that was Her wish. āIt will not be deterred, Your Grace.ā It was a molten warmth that sang through her at the acceptance, filling the cracks in the foundation that years of chiding herself had built like gold among ceramics. Praise she lapped greedily at. It seemed selfish to be content here, with the death and chaos and mutiny still fresh as sheād been informed. In need of her help; a chance, a thrown bone Petra would not waste. āI have, and always will, be prepared to do as you wish. Hopefully I can make that evident in my time returned.ā
