She's fallen asleep on the couch and, in her sleep, she cuddles into her grandmother's side.
Looking up from her book, Violet is surprised but happy to see Helen cuddling into her. It is an intimacy that they both find easier when asleep, she realises. Turning her head, she kissed the top of Helen’s head before resting her cheek to the same spot. Waiting to make sure Helen hadn’t stirred, she needed her sleep after all, Violet went back to reading.

Violet was a little lost for words once Zoe had finished speaking. It wasn’t truly out of shock but more out of her desire to experience the things the other had spoke of. “Hmmm…I don’t know. I think we’ve gotta make things a bit more equal. LAugh to frown ratio and all that.”
“Can’t that simply be done over time and not all at once?”
She's got a small spot at the base of her neck where an old, somewhat large scar from Russia is acting up and she's rubbing at it incessantly.
Placing her hands on Debra’s shoulders, she slowly moves Debra’s hands away and replaces them with her own - smoothing circles over the scar and hoping that Debra will direct her if she needs to do anything else to it.
“I’ve noticed you have quite a few scars,” she states as bluntly as usual but not meaning to. “How did you get them?”

Debra sighed and shook her head. “No. In fact I’d say the physical scars are the least severe.” She bit her lip and let out a small sigh. “It’s not…it’s not a particularly pleasant memory. Thank you though, for…I don’t know, caring.”
“I always care, Debra. Perhaps it doesn’t show but I do. I’m sorry you had to go through all that.” Can’t help thinking about how Debra shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place but realises this is not the time or place and is also trying her best to realise that this is a very different time from the one she grew up in. The rules have changed and it is she that must try to keep up, not keep the others back.
Her thumbs are now massaging the scar. “How does that feel? Is it helping at all?”
So Violet, what do you think of the new pope?
“I much preferred the previous one. This one seems far too liberal for my liking. It’s causing too much trouble within the church.”
Sam's curled up on her couch, hugging her belly protectively under the blanket, staring at the tv without really watching it. She'd been crying, her red eyes say that much, but that's all she really seems to do at home anymore.
Violet had decided that she really should visit the youngest adult member of her family. Finding the door unlocked, she was about to reprimand Sam for it when she saw the state the younger woman was in. Putting her bag and coat on another chair, she went to stand over her - bending down to look at her more closely.
“Samantha? What in heaven’s name happened? You look like someone died.”
samantha--carter:
Sam felt as relaxed as she’d been in weeks, almost safe. She could lean against Violet and her eyes actually started to slip closed, curling a little more comfortable against the older woman.
Opening her eyes to look up at her relative, Sam let go of her belly to give Violet’s hand a soft squeeze. “I’m sorry, I… I didn’t know. I used to think everyone in our family had these fairy tale marriages that survived everything, but… I was so wrong.” Staring down at the table, Sam only barely murmurs the next sentence, “I still love both of them.”
Looking down at Sam, Violet couldn’t help but recognise her former self in the innocent, beaten down young woman in her arms. Although not an identical situation, she had some inkling of what Sam was going through and Violet knew it was a torturous place to be in.
Violet just shook her head and squeezed Sam’s hand back. “I have not told many. I don’t even know if Helen knows. It’s usually something I find far too private to share. This is a very special situation, though, so I felt it was appropriate to tell you. Marriage is hard and if one either does not or cannot put enough into it then ... it cannot survive if only one gives their all.” Hearing the quiet, barely audible words, Violet held her closer. “I know you do. That’s what makes it hurt so much.”
samantha--carter:
“Yeah, Grandma?”
“You are very beautiful. Has anyone told you that before?”
samantha--carter:
“No, I wasn’t. Now, just… just stop it, Violet.”
“If you wanted this to be a quick conversation, my dear, you might want to try being clear from the start. All you’ve succeeded in doing is confusing me.”
samantha--carter:
“Oh, please, you’re far from the paragon of virtue you paint yourself. Maybe what was best for your kids was a scrap of maternal affection, too bad you couldn’t even wring that from that rock you call a heart.”
“I did my best in the time I was in and with what I was given in support in raising them. I am sorry that it doesn’t measure up to your expectations of raising children but I promise you that what is expected now and what was expected then are two completely different worlds. You should try remembering that before you try to judge another.”
"I'm scared I'm going to go to hell."
“What? Why?”

Debra manages to quiet her laugh into a kind smile. “I imagine that must be very strange for you, given your beliefs, but I think sometimes…sometimes we can get so focused on one passage we forget about the others.”
“You’re a Christian, right? Think of Ruth. Her vow to Naomi is held up time and time again as a model of the dedication spouses should have for each other. In fact, the word to describe the way she felt was the same Hebrew word used to describe how Adam felt about Eve. Why would they include that if it was so wrong?“
“I ....” Violet looked at Debra with much confusion. She couldn’t deny that Debra was right about that bible verse but it still clashed completely with what the church had taught her about how she should be.
“I do not know. I .. I do not understand. What .. What about lust? That’s a deadly sin.”
debracarter:
Debra hesitated, unsure of how she felt at either comparison Violet had made, but she knew the other woman meant them as compliments, so she gave her a thankful nod. “Well he is my great grandfather, so I suppose it makes sense. And…I shouldn’t. My mother was…well despite our disagreements and the way she died…she was a good woman and she did a lot of good in the world. Sometimes I think I’m too quick to discount that.” She fell into a contemplative silence as she poured Violet’s tea. “Do you like anything in it?”
“Just a spot of milk, please,” she answered Debra’s question with a smile. “She must have done something to have imparted such a negative impact on you. Humans have a habit of remembering the bad over the good. It still doesn’t mean you have no right to complain but it is up to you. I, obviously, never met the woman so I have no right to judge any of you when it comes to her.”
“Surprise tickle attack!”
“What?” Even through her confusion she can’t help but laugh at the tickles. “What’s going on? What are you doing? Why are you doing that?”
debracarter:
“I know, but this is the quickest.”
“Well, you’ve achieved your goal now.” The laughing continued. “You can stop.”

“If I find the answer to that myself, I’ll let you know,” she murmured, clinging to her grandmother tightly. “It just doesn’t seem fair, does it? We’re supposed to lose our parents. That’s just a part of life, but our children? It’s just not fair.”
“No, it’s not fair. You work so hard to protect them .... I’ve asked God so many times for guidance .. for an explanation and yet he is silent. Or at least I have not heard him. Sometimes I wonder ... If it is a punishment. That I did something so heinous that it was a deserving fate for me.”
