finally i have a new drawing tablet, so here is a very rough doodle as familiarise myself with it. this is my design for a younger vivia

this is my interpretation of what he was like when he was younger assuming that the book he talks about in his gumshoe gabs is actually about his life, the one about the rookie detective solving the murder of a girl's mother. this would be him at the time of that case

here he's a trainee detective and probably around 16/17 years old i imagine. he had natural green hair when he was younger and dyed black streaks in it when he left home. i also feel like he might've had curlier, bouncier hair like this but after he becomes more depressed (like how he is in game) he stopped taking care of it.

as for his personality, he's stoic and takes his job very seriously lol. he has a strong sense of justice and determination. i always wondered why vivia was a detective if he seemed to hate solving mysteries so much, so i think it makes sense if he used to be more ambitious in the past before becoming demotivated later on in life after he had already became a master detective. vivia in game also does show a pretty cheeky personality at times all things considered when he's in a better mood, so maybe there's a bit more of that here too when he's not working.

i'm pretty sure (?) it's canon that vivia was always in tune with the supernatural, so i think he developed his forte well before he actually got the qualifications of master detective.

he usually wears his hood up but i wanted to draw his hair lol.

being able to interact with ghosts made him a curious person hence why he decided to become a detective; everything feels new and exciting to him as he travels the world and solves cases. he is not jaded just yet!

Some day I want to see a show that does the “no filler episodes” thing from the opposite direction. Just a whole season worth of low-stakes character pieces that seem to move the overall story absolutely nowhere, then episode 26 pulls all the triggers at once and this massive Rube Goldberg machine of a plot the show’s been quietly setting up in the background the whole time hits you like a truck.

So there’s an anime that does this, called Stars Align.

On the surface, a very soft anime about a failing Boy’s Soft Tennis club who need to win a SINGLE match or they’ll be disbanded.

And every episode there’s some tiny thing about one or more of the characters. Oh, this guy has some odd feelings about being adopted. This guy has some gender feelings. This one lies a lot, and maybe doesn’t even realise he’s lying. This guy’s dad is bad news. Little moments, little feelings. And then the last episode absolutely brutally kicks you in the face and the series ends there. Absolutely beautiful show, I fully rec it, but also like big warnings for being so 90% soft and 10% emotionally brutal.

The facial expressions on Rain Code’s head sprites are reaction image material.

As someone who still regularly uses a lotta Rain Code sprites/expressions as emotes and stickers on Discord, I agree! It was also fun seeing my screenshot of Vivia blankly staring at the camera make a few short rounds in the fandom back when I just got into it, heh. If nobody's using Rain Code emotes anymore, then that means I have vanished off the face of the earth.

Since Komatsuzaki only had to illustrate headshots for the characters' dialogue, it's clear he put his all into making every expression distinct and vibrant in emotionality. So while they all have a limited number of sprites on their own, they all add up into a wide array of lively expressions for our viewing pleasure. I'm sure every Rain Code fan has their personal favorites, whether it be Halara's classic wink or Yakou sweating bullets or Yomi living up to his last name.
