2% Milk of Human Kindness || Clint and Vision

There’s a tension in the kitchen, an anxious energy that’s palpable. Perspiration beads and drips from furrowed brows. Hands that hold knives tremble as years of training and precision run up against an artificial--but substantial--fear. Trained eyes squint and then go wide with panic. Glass shatters, spectators gasp.

All of this is documented in such a way to heighten the drama. There are tight, zooming camera shots on scowling faces, bandaged hands, shaking tools. Subtle music added to the spectacle plays at a quick tempo, a savage avatar of racing human hearts.

Vision tips his head to the side as he observes. 

“If the preparation of food is considered an art, why is then also considered a torment?”

Stories in stories || One-shot

For about a week, Vision almost becomes fascinated with the television.

Storytelling--the very nature of imagination itself--seems essential for sentient life to endure and thrive. Perhaps existence, when acknowledged, was too heavy a weight without fantasy to prop it up. Perhaps the capacity to dream up new and lofty ambitions was what drove life to test its boundaries and create new technologies. Perhaps for some it was an outlet of ideas, or a balm to soothe against horrors both physical and metaphysical

But television. J.A.R.V.I.S. had known television, had known what sorts of programs his charges has preferred and what sorts they wouldn’t enjoy seeing. He knew that Harold Hogan liked Downton Abbey and Pepper Potts liked design programs and black-and-white movies. He knew Tony Stark often appeared on TV, sometimes in unacceptable states of sobriety and undress; he knew that Virginia Potts didn’t want to see these things, but that she was required to.

Distantly, Vision knows what J.A.R.V.I.S. knows, so when he stands in front of a television for the first time, it rings familiar even as his eyes fall on something he’s never seen before.

It is pictures and sounds, humans and animals and other things telling stories. Sometimes, the images are true and real and live, not fictions but facts and events. Still stories. It’s how much these stories seem to matter to humans that fascinates Vision the most. Sometimes they weep or become angry. Sometimes they cheer. Sometimes they argue about what the stories mean, whether the characters made the right decisions or treated each other properly. And sometimes, Vision finds, some humans just enjoy having the device on even while their focus is drawn to other things. The figures on the screens are nothing more than minute fluctuations in light-emitting diodes, accompanied by digitally recorded and reproduced sound, but they serve the purpose of comforting with their presence, almost as though they were real.

Vision tries watching television with his teammates.

He watches with Steve Rogers as a team of athletes of whom he is fond play the sport of baseball against another team--of whom he is, apparently, less fond. His team loses at the very end of the game. Captain Rogers becomes--relative to his standard demeanor--quite emotional. The next day, people ask him about the result of the game as though he were partly responsible.

He watches with Sam Wilson as a smiling chef prepares a meal with raw, simple ingredients. Sam Wilson makes a similar dish for the team for dinner, although some of his ingredients come prepared from a store. The teammates agree that it’s an enjoyable meal despite Sam’s deviations from the televised instructions. Sam smiles just like the chef did.

When Wanda Maximoff turns on the television, it’s because she enjoys the voices and the music in the background while she does other things. Vision watches as she goes about her room straightening things up, then sits down to read a book. He never asks her why.

[sent at 1:30 AM] I certainly understand the appeal of dogs as companion animals, given their loyal nature and appeasement-based behavior; if I am being honest, I feel no particular predilection toward any particular variety of pet, though I suspect many of my colleagues would equate my personality to that of a “cat person”.

I do, I am one of those weirdos who wants there to at least be a light at the end of the tunnel. The funny thing about Vision is I think his happiness comes from a combination of simple and profound--things like making a teammate smile, experiencing a piece of music for the first time, watching the city slowly illuminate itself as the sunset fades to night. He likes sweaters and watching humans reach the heights of their full potential. I mean, how could I not want that for him?

The far unlit unknown || one-shot

It is a testament to humanity’s abandon, the sheer height to which Vision must soar to see the fringe of the city from Tony Stark’s grand tower. Even from the top floor of the penthouse, there’s no clear end to the urban sprawl that isn’t a river, and even those are surmounted by the great sweep of bridges, lifting and pouring the endless flow of electric-lit life from one island to another.

Vision lifts up from the landing pad that Tony has constructed for himself--and his teammates, he’d say, quick to make it known that a 10 meter wide platform hundreds of meters in the air is available to all the Avengers--and lets the wind batter his cape against his body as he rises. No ordinary human would be comfortable at this elevation, even without the instinct-stirring distance between them and terra firma. For Vision, it is hardly an inconvenience.

By day, foliage swallows the edges of the city where the densely packed urban footprint turns into the sparse distribution of suburbs and towns. After sunset, however, the light of day gives way to millions of pinpoint artificial suns, giving the sky for miles around an unnatural orange glow. 

Lifting higher into the sky, the fringes start to become clear to extraordinary eyes. He knows the distance between Tony’s tower and the facility that’s become the new official home; it can be traveled in both directions by road in the space of a day, with an acceptable amount of time in between to “visit the city” or “check in upstate”. Airborne, overland, it’s an even shorter trip, but not one that’s readily available to the entire team.

The wind snaps at Vision’s cape, reminding him rather abruptly of the first time he looked out over this city. Moments old, acting on freshly minted impulses, Vision thought--as the children and the lost of this city must still think--that the streets and lights and man-made thrum must go on forever.

That it would always be hard to see the stars.
