Fish in the Basilica Cistern

Amidst the ancient stones and legends, I noticed fish swimming gracefully through the still waters of the cistern. It was as though they were oblivious to the history beneath them, moving in peace as if guided by the very spirit of the place. The fact that life still thrives here, deep beneath the ground after so many centuries, is a testament to the purity of the water, astonishingly clear and vibrant enough to support life even today.

The Medusa Head in the Basilica Cistern

As I wandered through the Basilica Cistern, I couldn’t help but notice the Medusa head, lying sideways in the still waters. According to Greek mythology, to gaze into her eyes would turn you to stone — so perhaps her sideways position is a reminder not to make eye contact, a warning to keep our distance from the power she once wielded.
