I feel really bad for both animation studious that worked on the new Uzumaki anime. The original one for having a project they were very passionate and cared about ripped away from them, and the one that replaced them because they clearly tried very hard to capture Junji Ito's style and detail despite the chopped down budget and time to work on it resulting in inferior animation.

Bean counters ruining things again.

Some thoughts on Uzumaki (2024) for those who will listen. (minor spoilers for the episode)

Well...what can I say I am disappointed. I was hoping to get more screencaps from this episode but I just ended up being appalled by the animation. It really brought me out of the story and I simply could not focus.

I don't know how many episodes they plan on making but I hope that it is a one time bump in the road. Well I assume we will have quality drops for the next few episodes as well just hoping it is not often.

I have read the manga and this episode features one of the goofier side-plots of the story. The hair fight which was not made any scarier with the animation. One thing that was horrifying in the manga but not in the anime was the lighthouse scene.

Think the first episode highlighted the horror well, lots of detailed shots and closeups. Very tense atmosphere. Unfortunately the opposite happened in episode 2. I am quite certain they just put a fire effect over the burning kid and called it a day. Barely felt like the kid had died.

Not helped at all by how quickly the anime breezes past each chapter. It doesn't let the viewer soak in what happened. This sort of structure is fit for action and slice of life but not suspenseful horror. No time to realise what that whole snail business was about we need to move onto the snake people! Now we need to move onto the lighthouse! Too much to absorb in very little time.

I did somewhat enjoy how they tried to weave the storylines together but they just went too fast for my taste.

I saw brief glimpses of good animation in some of the horror scenes. Especially with the human-snake twirling and the way the sentient hair moved. Everything else felt like it was being moved by a mouse or poorly rotoscoped.

It just seems like poor Junji Ito cannot catch a break when it comes to getting his work animated. You could get TRIGGER or Ghibli on board and still something horrible will happen. I suppose it is a curse.

I have no clue why episode two is like that, atleast this frame of Kirie looks very cute.
