i like to imagine that the ground is a lot more willing to get fucky with gender stuff than the sphere. that kind of thing is new to rudo!
once he fell, rudo heard enjin referring to riyo with multiple different pronoun sets and asked about it. after an extremely bad explanation from enjin and a better one from semiu, rudo shifted from going by he/him to he/they. he feels a lot more like himself that way.

It's a playful sing - song, both because Aleta is a playful person and because they both know that, even had Aleta not happened to be in the area, Santiago could have handled this flavor of fucker. Still, nobody smart turns down free help, and as the last of the randos collapses, either dead ( santiago ) or unconscious ( aleta ) she grins at the other Giver like they're old besties. "Good to see you, Santiago. It seems like you're having all sortsa fun. Who'd you piss off?"

also thinking abt amo and romantic feelings. particularly like...i think she doesn't often process that her feelings for someone are romantic because her understanding of what romantic love feels like is so warped. like, she'd never think to connect her little crush on rudo with how she felt about mister or how mister made her feel, you know?
on the other hand, i do think that when/if she realizes her feelings for someone are explicitly romantic, a part of her feels like she's a fucked up monstrous freak for feeling that way. like just by virtue of loving someone romantically she must be like mister
i'm thinking a lot about amo and clothes at current. because mister gets her all these clothes, and she's clearly happy about receiving them, at least in the abstract. but at the same time, the only dress we ever see her in is the same one that she was wearing when her mother sold her; everything else just goes in a pile. and her dress is too small for her body now, and that fact means that's it's sexualizing her a great deal, far in excess of what a lot of the clothes that mister gets her would.
and like...there's something there, right? she believes that she's perfectly content with mister, loves him, even, at least for a time. but she chooses not to wear the things he gets her, chooses to wear something small, old, falling apart, even as it sexualizes her further ( something that, prior to mister telling her she's in love with him, she explicitly does not want ). maybe it's a small rebellion against mister. maybe desperate clinging to something she got from her mother, in this environment without her mother. maybe both.
she hates being told what to wear. enjin telling her to cover up drives her into a frenzy of anxiety and rage; i wonder if mister ever tried to force her to change. either way, it's a man sexualizing her, telling her how to live. mister controls every aspect of her life, from what she eats to what we reads to what she wears. what she wears is one of the few small ways she can assert autonomy, can assert even a modicum of control over her life.
i think she cried, finally giving up that torn little dress. i think she was excited to get new clothes, sure, clothes she hadn't been locked up and starved in. but i also think she cried, losing this last thing her mother had given her, losing her one single symbol of rebellion.

They suit Amo better. But she's glad she didn't have to use her special powers on those freaks. It's been a long time since anyone's protected her without them making her do that.
