Title: Women at the Harpsichord Artist: Gerolamo Induno (Italian [Milanese], 1825-1890) Date: 1876 Genre: genre art Style: Rococo Revival Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: 64 cm (25.2 in) high x 43 cm (16.9 cm) wide Location: private collection
Gerolamo Induno was not only an artist but also a soldier: he fought and was wounded in the "Five Days of Milan" rising against the Austrian army in 1848, and he also served with the Bersaglieri, then part of the Royal Sardinian Army, during the Crimean War. For much of his career he specialized in military art, but after the success of the Risorgimento he turned to genre scenes of figures in 17th- or 18th-century costume, such as the painting shown here.
