“I’ve heard about it from Principal Garrison. Dom’s one of the good ones, Mrs. Parrish. He knows what he wants in life and he’s very passionate about the things he believes in. It’s admirable. Of course I do, anytime. If you’re available, I have a free period on Monday between 10 and 11:00 am. Otherwise Wednesday, 2 pm. That’s when my last class ends that day and I usually stay behind to correct work. Which ever day works best for you, I’ll be at school.”

“ I’m very happy to hear you say that, Mr. Dixon. He’s a fantastic kid, I couldn’t be prouder of him. I just don’t want him making any grave mistakes that’ll gamble with his future now, you know. And I think it’s important to include the school in this conversation and.. you know, any thoughts. To find a path or whatever it may be that’s agreeable for everyone. Oh, Wednesday would be perfect. I’ll come by around 2:30, does that work for you? Thanks again so much, I really appreciate you taking the time. You have a lovely evening, Mr. Dixon, and enjoy your mulled wine!  ”

“Mrs. Parrish! Hello. It’s nice to see you, too. Ah, don’t you worry. I’m doing good, thank you. Really good. And yourself? How’s Dom’s doing?”

“ I’m doing alright, yeah, thank you. House is already getting busy with Thanksgiving and the Holidays just around the corner, but it’s nice. I’ll never complain about a full house. Yeah. Oh, he’s doing good, yeah, thanks for asking. He’s, uh, he’s taking his new responsibilities very seriously, I’m just afraid he’s neglecting his other ones a little now. [..] I’ve actually been hoping you would have a moment for me one of these days. Not now! Obviously. We’re here to enjoy some.. hot wine and a fire and that’s how it should be. Just sometime. I’ve been trying to get in contact with Principal Garrison but that man’s schedule seems to barely allow it and.. I know Dom really respects you. ”

“ Huh? Oh, I’m so sorry! I didn’t see you were in line, I didn’t mean to cut in front of you. Oh, Mr. Dixon! Goodness, it’s dark here. Forgive me. Hi, it’s so nice to see you around here. How are you doing? ”

“What are you proposing?”

“ Just that we think about it. Getting them a place somewhere, not far. Our mortgage here is almost paid off – what is it, five more years? – and I think it’s better to have money in properties than it is to have it lying around, so it’s not a bad idea if we’re looking at the longterm future as well.. But do you think Elliot and Nate might feel like they came up short if Dom gets a place now and they never did? ”

“… Don’t I know that face. What may that something be, baby?”

“ It’s about Dom and Maddie, the little one. And, especially now that quarantine is ending, they can’t just stay here indefinitely. I doubt they would want to, either. They’re a young family now. I imagine they’ll want their own space, somewhere to raise the baby. It doesn’t seem like the worst time for us to invest, either. ”

“ Well, I don’t care what you think. I think my grandchild is a genius. She’s sitting up all by herself now! She’ll be crawling all around the house in no time. [..] I’ve been thinking about something, Clay.. ”

What do you want or wish most for your kids?

“ I guess what any mother wants for her kids. I want them to be strong individuals who are able to tell right from wrong. To have a relatively easy life – not one where they don’t have to work for things, but one that doesn’t give them unnecessary pain and suffering. ”

Have you ever cheated or been cheated on?

“ At least not to my knowledge. ”

“The bride took it with a sense of humour but the groom wasn’t too happy about some American dude crashing their big day. You can imagine I was too  drunk for my own good, but I remember making a run for it at one point when the guy expressed what he’s going to do to me next. I’m still sometimes scared he’ll suddenly show up to keep his promises.”

“ To be entirely fair to you, it’s their own fault for celebrating their ‘big day’ in Vegas. Isn’t the whole point of Vegas to have drunk American dudes providing a little bit of entertainment? Maybe you should’ve kept your hands off the cake, though. You, know, I’ve still never actually been to Vegas – Mike always said we’d go eventually. If it ever happens, you should come. Redeem yourself. And show me how to work the slot machines, something tells me you’d have more of a knack for working them than Mike. ”

–– vivian has elegance and class that people usually attribute with women far older than herself, a characteristic inherited from her parents’ socialite presence in their own circles. she enjoys a party but with wine, having fun and banter but only when it’s backed with intelligence. and while her boyfriend michael adores her not only for her beauty but her wit and conversations, vivian knows she’s not anybody’s girl. she’s her own and she will do her own thing at any sacrifice, headstrong and a clear ‘no bullshit’ attitude. it’s what she’s doing now by following her passion for art and painting even though her father would have preferred her taking over the family legacy one day and continuing their company. vivian loves mike and his unwavering respect for her, and sometimes she thinks he’s too good of a person. naive, almost. they almost never squabble, he’s quick to apologize and see things her way. she doesn’t know why it rubs her the wrong way when most women would be over the moon to have found the romance novel man. but they may just be things she’s telling herself to feel better about the crush she’s developing on one of mike’s friends – clay parrish. he’s got an edge to him, a sarcastic roughness that makes vivian laugh and laugh and laugh. most nights that they’re out all together, she ends up orbiting around clay somehow. and she’d lie if she said she didn’t notice the ways he looks at her too. ––

“Dumbo’s always been my favourite,” Eric said with a charming smile, holding his cup close to his lips but not taking another sip just yet. “Actually the first movie I cried over. When he has to leave his mom?” he stopped, not waiting for a reply, “Worst moment of my childhood,” he laughed, finally taking a sip from his coffee. The conversation was light and playful. When he ran into Vivian earlier, he had literally felt the stress radiating off of his friend. He knew about her youngest son becoming a father any day from now. It doesn’t feel that long ago, when he was running from store to store to prepare for his family additions. However, after time, you simply pass the clothes that don’t fit the older to the younger sibling. Becoming a grandparent is a whole new chapter though, that he was looking forward to exploring himself one day. “That’s your question?” he asked, snorting. “Bagheera,” he answered, leaning forward a little before adding, “Easy,” 

“ Think it’s one of my least favourites for exactly that reason, ” she admitted with a laugh, pursing her lips in thought afterwards. “ Same with Bambi. Pinocchio, even. I’d probably still be devastated watching them now, has been a while. ” She sighed, leaning back in the comfortable chair and tapping her nails against the side of her coffee cup. “ I guess that’s the beauty of them. They’re such timeless classics, I feel like they don’t do them the same way anymore. ” Vivian wasn’t sure if it was the art style of the newer era Disney movies that put her off or simply nostalgia for the films that she watched in her own childhood. At his answer that came quick like a shot, Vivian was visibly impressed, forming a little silent ‘wow’ with her lips and shimmying her shoulder at him. “ You do know your trivia. Get the feeling my grandchild won’t grow up with that same knowledge.. ” She paused, realising what she had just said and simply having to laugh at having it vocalised. “ Grandchild. I sound ancient. How does that happen? ”

“I have like, a stupidly extensive knowledge on Disney movies,” Eric shrugged, bringing his cup to his lips to take a short sip of his beverage. Thanks to his four wonderful children, he had watched about every Disney movie six times. “Go ahead, ask me anything. I bet I can answer it,“ he challenged with a bored expression.

Vivian knew that she was going to be a grandmother – that made her sound ridiculously old – virtually any day now, so she was in the process of compiling a basket of things for the newest addition to the family. She had run into Eric when she was stood in front of the Disney plushies section at Target and he had decided to save her with a coffee because her head had started to hurt from all the colourful things that made a lot of noise. Of course their conversation had turned back to the topic anyway. “ I find that impressive. I remember that Dumbo is an elephant from my own Disney days and that’s about it. ” Despite having four children of her own, their and her interest for Disney movies had always been minimal. “ You’re putting me on the spot even for having to think of a question, ” she chuckled, momentarily in thought. “ Ah, no! The Jungle Book is another one I remember. Okay. What was the.. what was it, a panther? What was the panther’s name? ”

Have you ever cheated or been cheated on in a relationship? If you cheated, what made you cheat? If you've been cheated on, how did you cope?

“ Things are never black and white or completely linear, especially when we’re dealing with people. Sometimes we do stupid things that hurt someone, even though we love them more than anything. I have. And I can’t even tell you for sure what made me do it. A moment of weakness, perhaps. It wasn’t planned, it never would have been. My husband and I had had a nasty fight and it happened. Luckily though I was forgiven. ”

Have you ever thought about leaving your husband at one point? If so, which point; what was it about?

“ There’s honestly been a couple times where I thought to hell with it all. In a marriage you sometimes annoy each other so much that all you can think about is running as far away as possible. But all the other times you’re reminded how much you love each other and all you can think about is wanting to spend the rest of your life not missing this other person. You can’t get one without the other because every feeling you have for this person is heightened to the max; two sides of the same coin. So yes. The thought has crossed my mind a few times. But only once I had been seriously considering it, and that was because I didn’t know how the way he’d been acting at the time could have affected the children. ”
