Bar Scene - Gangster Squad

Since this role served as a good deal of inspiration for Vivian (and continues to) I had to include a scene from it. If anything, it speaks to the role she portrays at the club---coy, always flitting just out of reach. The music that drags below is what is actually below all that. (Came close to using the “Don’t go.”/”Make me.” scene, but that speaks to a different part of her life with a man I just might write up.)

To be fair, this was placed down half in pacing to provide a break towards the slower, somewhat sadder songs of the next half. At the same time, though, it speaks to all the hopes pinned to her marriage---it’s the phase of Teddy’s life he died representing.

Carmen - Lana Del Rey

It's alarming honestly how charming she can be/Fooling everyone, telling them she's having fun/She says, "You don't want to be like me/Don't wanna see all the things I've seen."/I'm dying, I'm dying

This song always came across to me as a woman warning another away from a life like hers. It harkens back what was brought up in the opening sequence where Vivian plays to her roles while crumbling inside.

You - Keaton Henson

A song full of all the things you would wish you had said when you didn’t know it to be your last chance.

Time For Bed - Anna Karenina

A gentle tune for when the night draws to an end, bringing Vivian back to the little one she lives for.

“You are very welcome. I am glad that I could be of some help.” Evelyn was always trying to help those who had less than she did. It was a lesson she had learned during the Great Depression. Her family hadn’t had very much during that time and yet they were always helping those who needed it. Life was hard but it was easier with some random acts of kindness. “Sometimes they have like a personal assistant or a friend they bring to set to help them. I’ve just learned to never be alone with them. Some of these men in Hollywood just don’t have any class.”

“Somehow the more money a man has to spend, the more crass he seems to get.” Or, maybe, it had more to do with what he thought he could get away with. At the very least, Vivian thought she could count her blessings to have snagged one of the few bosses who was an exception to the rule. If anything, Yuri might have proven far richer if he accepted the bribes passed his way...or stopped being forced to give handouts, but she would save that guilt for another day. “It was an illusion shattered rather quickly once I moved here. The perils of being a country girl, I suppose.”

Evelyn laughed at what the woman said. “Well I’m glad that all this extra money helps with the water bill and whatever else that you need.” Pulling out her wallet from her purse, she pulled out a fifty dollar bill and handed it to the woman. “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I hope this’ll help with whatever those extras may be.” The woman had a point. This place was more intended for drunk men. “I hate to say it but drunkards of the male variety can be found everywhere in this world. You should see some of the men that I work with. A few hit the bottle early in the day.”

"I...” Vivian forced herself to swallow her pride, pressing a shaky smile onto her face. “Thank you. It’s...” Ah, what could be the harm, really? “My daughter will be very grateful, let alone myself.” She realized her eyebrows were lifting too late to school her expression into something more appropriately neutral. Then again, the woman didn’t seem much concerned with doing the expected thing. “Dear Lord, do they at least have... What’s the right term? Handlers? Someone to keep them making too much of an ass of themselves, at least.”

What word were you thinking of?” Evelyn laughed, trying to imagine what the woman had in mind. “Overly familiar or not I am sure that you are just racking in the money which I am sure is nice. Just imagine the Christmas gifts you can get for your family. No. I didn’t think I was. Do I dare even ask who your usual clientele is?”

Vivian pursed her lips, although it was more to hide a smile than anything else. She was caught off guard by how...well...charmed she was. “Well, it does help keep on top of the water bill from all the showers I’ve needed.” She gave way to a smile then. “And a few extras.” As much as she might begrudge her work, that didn’t make having the certainty to ensure her daughter a exciting Christmas was any less fulfilling. “I would imagine ‘drunkards of the male variety’ would be the polite way to describe them. It’s an image that fills the imagination for most women, I find.”

“Is lonely the word used for it now? Or just the polite one?” Vivian sighed, although there was an edge of a laugh towards the end. “Business in and of itself isn’t bad, no, but everyone’s ‘loneliness’ tends to mean a tendency to get overly familiar. It no doubt goes without saying that your not our usual clientele.” Not that she was about to complain about that.
