Okay, normally I’d type this out on my alt blog but I’m feeling a little silly today so-

I think about this constantly. Even if not every ability is canonical, a lot of these abilities match up with their character and lore. Vine staff and Medkit are naturally spawned healers so ofc they’re their abilities center around that. Coil’s abilities would be part of her modifications and that desire to diversify her initial “gravity coil”. Since her healing isn’t naturally obtained, it isn’t as good in comparison to Med and Vine (unless she increases to S rank). Subspace, both lacking in healing abilities, lore-based modification, and even shield- makes up for that in healing himself via kills. Considering Sub’s cruel character, this aspect of the abilities granted in-game works perfectly with Subspace.

Then there’s Boombox. Wasn’t born a healer and can’t heal itself, doesn’t mod to gain them, and isn’t cruel enough to heal itself via eliminations. Knowing it’s compassionate, altruistic self, BB is basically equivalent to some random guy who wanted to help out. I wonder if the fact its close-range primary and it’s high knock-back abilities also play into the idea of “valuing others above himself, even if it’s to his own detriment”. Like the idea of someone charging in to protect you/help you out when you’re in danger, knocking the attacker back and body blocking. The E Speed boost works for that angle too. Also, it isn’t like BB hasn’t gone out of its way to defend someone- literally to its own demise/perceived death *cough* skateboard *cough*.

So in my opinion, I think the lack of healing aids to the self-sacrificial aspect of BB’s character. A support who isn’t naturally born with healing, who values the other over its own well-being to the point of detriment- enough that it would charge into a phight without any guarantee of getting out alive. :DD

Okay. Blocks like these are why I type this stuff out on my alt ;-; oh well. YOLO!

I love this analysis because it also complements the way you have to play Boombox in matches. Since he can't heal himself or his allies, the character has to compensate by staying at the front of the battlefield alongside the melees, a position that puts him at constant risk. This is particularly dangerous since Boombox has the least health points of all the supporters. His short-range main attack forces him into this vulnerable positioning, but his other abilities help mitigate the risk: they provide mobility, enemy control, speed buffs for both movement and phinisher charge acceleration, in my opinion, good tactical support.

This mechanic directly reinforces his theme of self-sacrifice.

I know that Boombox probably wasn't designed to be like this, with the "prioritize others over himself" mentality, but it still feels like the game, in some way, pushes you to play that way. He has to put himself in danger to do his job effectively, and there's no way around it through healing.

Now, drawing from my personal experience as a Boombox main, I've found that adapting to team composition becomes crucial. When I lose one of the melee fighters or especially the tank, I shift into a more defensive role, particularly if my remaining teammates are low on health or consist only of ranged fighters and other supporters. Boombox's powerful 200 shield points can sustain you for surprisingly long if you manage to evade enemies attacks long enough to trigger the shield regeneration, buying enough time for your melee fighters to respawn. Losing your tank, melee or healer severely impacts the team's survivability, but losing Boombox feels different, he's theoretically "disposable" in a way that actually fits his character.

Last point by prev is so so crucial to me. Most of the supports are some way, indisposable—Medkit and Vinestaff are healers. They're the heart of the team and they can't afford to die lest the other teammates die too, they are needed as they are wanted.

Coil is extremely adaptable—able to shift being offensive and defensive. He can either be the carry of the team, racking up kills and putting pressure on the enemy team—or he can play more supportively, pocketing tanks and tethering heals and speeds. He can ultimately change the tide of the match depending on how he's played.

And Subspace, despite for all his vulnerability and squishiness has such a game changing ult. His ult is actually so powerful that even in the pro-scene, he is a MANDATORY character in maps that complement his playstyle. (Ie. Teapot, Doomspire)

But you don't exactly need a Boombox. He can impact the game, yes, but he isn't entirely needed—not in the way healers can, or debuffers can. Hell, I'm actually surprised that there's a Boombox in most lobbies I play nowadays because he was ALWAYS the most underrated pick back then, even before his rework and after too. Most of the time, switching to another character was even more viable than continuing to play Boombox because he's technically a jack of all trades.

Does he have a decent amount of survivability? With 200 shield to recover, yes. Does he have a decent amount of damage? Yes. Can he deny area for the enemy team? Yes, but not without the cost of himself—the fact that he has a closed range playstyle speaks for itself. But that's about it—a jack of all trades, not excelling in anything in particular that's needed and unique to him. Any character can do what he can but better.

(Damage? You can swap out to a Melee, Ranged or hell, even Coil. Area Denial? Subspace and Rocket do a fair job of that. Knockback and Speed? It's nice but the boost that he gives is so... unnoticeable. Like an afterthought [Especially if your timing is inconsistent]. And when it comes to speed, most people I see ingame only think of Coil's speed tether which is a bit baffling since Boombox IS the speed character.)

This isn't to say that BB is a bad and awful character. It's just that you really have to understand his mechanics and EXCEL to be able to play him effectively. He's easy enough to play but to actually make an impact and help your team is the hard part. In my opinion, he's kind of a "Low skill floor, high skill ceiling" character where he can be played by beginners fairly easily enough but hard to actually impact the game/change the flow of the match with.
