Mental Health Illness: 10 Ways To Talk Mental Health
It is unavoidable that most individuals think of people with mental illness as violent and dangerous. With the way the news outlets and mainstream media portray mental illnesses, it is easy to see how misinformed and misguided the general public is when it comes to actual people with mental health issues. Often enough, the attitude within society that view symptoms of psychopathology as uncomfortable, bizarre and threatening causes stigma and discrimination to people suffering from a mental illness. This is more rampant in cases when an individual is brave enough to admit that they have mental health problems, causing interpersonal conflicts between friends, colleagues and family members.
Mental health stigma can be divided into two. The social stigma is when society reacts untowardly to people with mental health issues due to the psychiatric label placed upon them such as depression. Another is the self-stigma or the perceived stigma of the mental health sufferer that significantly affects their feelings of shame with the way they internalize their perception of discrimination. This is the main reason why people suffering from mental health issues are reluctant to get the help they need.
Stigma and discrimination is rampant among societies even with the rising awareness of the importance of mental health. People will react negatively to something they do not understand. It is human nature. However, the taboo of discussing mental health is gradually declining. That is why it is important now more than ever to openly talk about mental health, about how it affects people with it and society as a whole.
Here are 10 ways to address mental health:
1. Educate yourself and others about mental health
The most obvious and often the most overlooked solution in addressing mental health stigma is education and awareness. It is important to educate yourself about the different types of mental illnesses and how they affect the person and the society they are in. When you hear or see someone perpetrating a negative stereotype or misconceptionā¦ā¦.

He is not everything I was looking for in a man; he is more than that ā his good and bad combined. He seemed ordinary but he made me scared. There is something about him that made me think, or may be even believe. Our time together has been constantly about unraveling versions of ourselves that are foreign to us. He often tells me I am different [from the rest], so is he. Perhaps, this is quite different for us two; this is something new. Our daily routines are different, or even opposite, in nature - he does things I do not usually do and those that keep me occupied do not satisfy him. He is always in motion while Iām content with just bumming out. He lives for the endorphin highs and with the crowd; I live steadily and just with my crowd. Ā But surprisingly, it was working out for us. Maybe our common interests keep us going, the intellectual humor that connects us. Itās like our unconscious minds have already met before. We often end up saying the same things, wearing the same shirt color ā our psychic unity was already strong despite the getting-to-know stage. Ā Eventually, I started to learn that we share more than common interests, we share similar traits and characteristics. We have distinct habits yet we are so much alike. He is like an embodiment of my animus, as Jung would call it. Itās like having a version of yourself groomed and honed in a different way. From being snobbish to being aggressive, no one would understand him better than I do. Nevertheless, we continuously discovered pieces of ourselves bearing a new skin. With our similarities, we have to adjust and compromise, otherwise we would not grow. And we get amazed by how we accommodate, willingly or not, changes in order for things to work, to satisfy one another. It is difficult yet existentially beneficial. Albeit, in Summerās words, life does always happen. Somewhere between our petty fights and insistent desire to be enough, we became unworthy of and for each other. We got confused, or more aptly, scared and unsure. This is foreign to us; hence lines couldnāt be simply drawn. We questioned things, feelings, and what we have. Our once proud and profound bond got burnt in its core. Life almost won; we almost gave up, and maybe we did. Pain and anger became our go-to feelings; words became hurtful and ego-shattering. Our fears got in the way. Yet, as we always do, we compromise ā one should stay brave despite the cloudiness. After all, I firmly believe that there is inherent goodness in people; consequently, there is evil. There is always a yin to a yang. Ergo, there is always room for mistakes. We just have to look back and rethink our choices, our beliefs, to help us get perspective. Sometimes, we just have to be reminded of what truly matters. It kinda makes sense now⦠Maybe we got scared because we knew deep down we had given so much and we have something to lose. What we have became home where I felt safe, secured, and protected. This became a place where I can undress my cloaks of pretensions and still be accepted; a place where Iād always put up with the people involved. Thatās how I knew home and thatās how he made me feel. True enough, we are each otherās exception. We have gotten out of our customary ways for each other, to keep each other. I donāt allow myself to feel strongly for another person, he proved me wrong. I never knew I was capable of feeling so helpless yet so brave and fueled. He made me believe. As Diana said, itās not about deserve. Itās about what you believe. [And I believe in love]. Maybe it did not work out with others before because they were all conventional and convenient for us. And Iād like to think that we met each other just in time. Our previous experiences shaped us to suit and soothe each other; I couldnāt be more thankful for them. The you I know today is the kind of you I have been needing all along. Thank you for making my stars shine brightly again. You are my yellow. I do not have much to offer, but by now we know our stars are enough to completely illuminate each otherās constellations. And the heavens fall witness to this. I donāt know when we hit pause or rewind, but like you always say, we never really stopped⦠you never really stopped. And Iām quite sure I like how this is playing. Apparently, the universe rights itself; itās high time we make things right as well.

I. I miss you, and itās not like I miss your face, arms, or lips. I could do without, but simply your presence always reminded me of home, and I swear I lost that when you left. You donāt know, Iāve never felt so homeless and alone. No amount of money or possessions even compare to you. I wish you knew but *delete* II. You know people always text their lovers in the morning, so I bet its weird that Iām texting you in the middle of the day, drunk at three in the afternoon. Donāt judge me, but I swear this whiskey tastes like you and this empty bottle is like our love. I have practically consumed what was left of it, and there is nothing left to do but throw it at you. But you wonāt catch it. Open your arms, open your heart. Please donāt leave now because *delete* III. I hate you, hate everything about you. I canāt stand you anymore. but I love you, and I canāt breathe, please, please, answer me, I canāt *delete* IV. Itās been two weeks and these 336 hours and 14 minutes have been hell. You used to shimmer like a piece of heaven, but youāve gone and Iām fallen. And Iāve been trying to be poetic but poetry wonāt bring you back to me. Spilling my heart out isnāt helping, so what do I do now, what do I do without *delete* V. Hey, how have you been? *send*

Iām sad most of the time and I cry too much and my chest is probably black by now but if I could crack my bones in half and pour out any bit of happiness I had left, Iād put it into a syringe and inject it straight to your heart. I hope you smile the second it mixes with your blood. You called me in the middle of the night and you were crying and slurring your words and you told me you were broken. I want to fill every crack in your body with all the love I have for you but I think I would drown you in it. The other night you pulled up my sleeve and I swear I saw the sadness radiating from my scars burning your eyes. Iām so sorry. I promise Iāll erase them, even if it means tearing the skin off my bones. I hope you stop crying yourself to sleep. I know you like art. Iāll paint the walls of my apartment so that youāll shake less when you stay over. My landlord will get pissed and he might kick me out, but itās okay, I want to live inside you anyway. When that one song that always makes you happy gets boring, Iāll write you a new one. Iāll let you play it as loud as you want, even if it keeps me up at night. I hope it gets stuck in your head and stops your bones from aching. If you want me, Iām yours, all of me, every part of me. Or just the parts you want, I know you donāt like the way I bite my nails or steal your cigarettes. If you donāt want me, Iāll leave, I hope the next girl who loves you plants flowers inside of you.ā My mother told me that love is messy. I know how you hate messes. I promise Iāll keep your heart clean, even when I want to rip it out of your chest and and dump all the pieces out onto my bedroom floor so i can put them back together the right way.
