Down n Out Mac n Cheese Cheeseburger
I was going through this phase where all I wanted to do was eat burgers and specifically buy them from pop up stores. I had a friend who had visited a few trucks and said the burgers are actually really amazing so I did some looking and found a few trucks but they were quite far away… my dreams were crushed. One morning I was scrolling through Facebook and an ad came up of Down n Out Burgers; I checked out their instagram and WEOW the burgers looked fantastic! The burger which sparked my interest was their Mac n Cheese Cheese burger.
It appeared to be quite big with a generous serving of mac n cheese! I had never tried a burger with mac and cheese, and after reading that they have excellent reviews I visited with my partner for lunch after uni! I messaged them on Facebook asking their location and they said they were opposite the Three Monkey’s pub, and at the time they had just extended their stay for a little longer and said they would close shortly afterwards.
Yet to my surprise soon after my visit they ended up releasing those Pokemon burgers and it just exploded all over the world with ‘DOWN N OUT DELICIOUS POKEMON BURGERS’. Meanwhile I was sitting at home reading these articles thinking so why do they not make such a big deal of all the Pokemon burger joints and Pokemon themed restaurants in Japan? Why is this being pushed so heavily?
So my visit was BEFORE this crazy Pokemon burger phase. You walk into the pub that is on the corner opposite of World Square and at first it was a little confusing because initially when you walk in all you see are the many drink bottles surrounding the bar counter, the interesting wall cover and a massive mirror. Then in the back you see a small cooking station with a few ladies hovering around the cash register. We order the Mac and Cheese Cheese burger and after waiting for a while we finally get… these tiny looking burgers… The photo is really just a close up, but the burger was honestly so much smaller than what they looked like on Instagram to me.
So we take one huge bite and straight away your teeth just hits the really hard, chewy patty… thoughts just flooded my head, why is this so hard to eat? But the most important question was… WHERE IS THE CHEESE TASTE? It is NOWHERE! Despite having so much mac and cheese in the middle, it was so bland! The texture of the mac and cheese was off putting… it just wasn’t good mac and cheese for me. I like the type that is very warm and cheesy, where it just melts in your mouth… This was more like little pieces of under cooked pasta just sitting on top of a meat patty. However, I still did eat it all… it was still okay…my partner hated it.. said a McDonald burger is much better and more worth than this, which I totally understand. We payed quite a lot for this tiny, very average burger where at McDonalds you can get a burger with cheese that tastes like cheese, meat that is not typically hard like a rock, sauce that is heavenly with tomatoes, lettuce and pickles for about $5.00… and this just had baby spinach, mac and cheese and a meat patty…for $20.00… We gave it a 2/5.
My advice for those who look to Facebook for burger recommendations is do your research thoroughly, and don’t judge a book by its cover (aka don’t judge Instagram photos so easily like I did)… also don’t blindly follow trends from the media because sometimes they are just way to overly exaggerated.

The Lantern @ Roselands
The Lantern has changed their menu several times, and have increased the pricing for all their food items. It use to be a very family friendly place; affordable, lots of room for bringing families, and now it feels they are catering to a much older audience who can ‘afford’ to pay expensive prices for average food.
