Can you indulge me please, given the recent pandemic why is it that artist or fanfic writers are slowing down their works? I ask because personally I believe this makes it a better opportunity to work faster, as something to distract from the gloomy reality occurring.

I’ll indulge you, but I’m afraid you won’t like my answer very much.

The reason authors and artists aren’t working their asses off MORE is because this is a pandemic, not a vacation.

It’s not ‘extra free time’ for everyone.

For many it’s ‘my grandfather just died of COVID’ time.

For many, it’s 'I got laid off and am desperately trying to look for a way not to get evicted’ time.

For many, it’s 'I’m isolated from my friends, family and other sources of inspiration, I’m at home alone trying to deal with the world at large collapsing’ time.

It’s time to go out and protest for their rights. It’s time to fall into a depression because they can’t pay for medicine, because they’re worried about a loved one with an immunodeficiency, because they have to decide whether to pay full tuition for taking classes online, which isn’t as easy to learn from and feels like a rip-off.

I feel like this needs to be reiterated - fanfiction and fanart USUALLY doesn’t pay. It’s a hobby. Most fanfic authors aren’t armcandy to a wealthy millionaire, and they can’t just ignore other important life necessities in order to keep updating their 50k coffeeshop AU. It’s not a viable career, and it will not keep you afloat. And while yes, many use it as an escape, many also can’t write when they aren’t safe, secure and know where their next paycheck is coming from.

So I’m not very surprised many creators are taking time away. They have lives, loved ones, other responsibilities, and at least one of those three is very likely a clusterfuck right now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Be kind. Always assume everyone is doing their best. You never know what someone else might be going through.

Some days of us are working our asses off because we have to or others can’t. There’s little ‘relief’ to get the creative juices flowing.

On top of fighting the exhaustion, uncertainty, worry, and anxiety is bad enough - I also find myself battling with friends and family who refuse to take this crisis seriously despite my first hand stories and all the data. So, I’m also sad and heartbroken that people I love are turning out to be selfish asshats because they want to get their nails done and have wine night again.

I still try to write, still try to get into the good head space, it’s just far more of an effort now than it’s ever been.

For those who read and are waited on my WIPs, I appreciate your patience and understanding.

Cannot preach this enough. It’s a tough time for EVERYONE. Don’t be selfish and attack ANY creator - whether they make YouTube videos, or fanfic, or art - anything. You’re not the only ones going through a hard time. Please spread love, please be grateful for your fortunate positions and wish that others eventually come into the same good fortune. So many people have the “I don’t have it, so it’s not happening” ideology and it’s WRONG.

How did you get into writing screenplays professionally? Any tips?

I wouldn’t say I’m at the professional level. Not yet. I’m close. Mostly it’s blind pitching movies to anyone that I get close to that will listen to a blind pitch. This means literally walking up to producers, actors, directors, and outright pitching your movie. A lot. So you better already have it written and know what your plan is. I’ve done this many, many times over the past theee years. It’s gotten me to a producer who read the screenplay and offered to back it if I could find additional funding (indie producer high concept script her studio alone can’t fund it) but she said if I find someone else to back it she’d back me. I got the referral to her from an actor who heard my blind pitch. He introduced me to her with his referral (in person) and told me to pitch my movie.

After she gave me that referral I had to hit the bricks again. Look for additional funding. It came back to blind pitching my movie to actors, producers, basically anyone I came across who seemed interested and might be able to help. I hooked up with another indie producer recently who expressed mild interest in possibly reviewing two scripts I pitched to him based on my pitch and concept art I have for my characters and monsters. He’s busy right now (just premiered a movie so he’s doing the promo circuit) and while he’s doing that I’m trying to get my shit together to make sure both scripts are as well done as they can be. The first one was industry approved by the first producer the second one is still in the second draft stage.

Long story short: you need to be extroverted, charismatic, know your movie, story, characters, and ideas. You have to memorize your treatment and boil down your pitch to three minutes cause if you don’t get their attention immediately they don’t give a shit. If you get past the three minute mark you have an audience you continue from there. The only other possible advice I could give is get an agent but getting an agent is pretty much “sell your soul impossible” so I went with this route and have found more success than trying to wait for an agent referral. It does take an insane amount of charisma and networking and finding people willing to help you and all of that so if you don’t have that type of personality already I’m not sure exactly what else to tell you? I’m not professional yet but I am getting close and I’m not going to stop until I get there or die.
