I'm Back(ish)

So, I haven't done this in a long time! Well, that's not clompletely true. You can catch all my musical writing and posts over at The Music Ninja, where I'm the Hip-Hop Editor now!! Hit that link and check out all the posting/writing you previously saw here plus contributions from a bunch of other awesome music bloggers. I've decided I really want to keep doing something with this site, though. Hang tight while I decide exactly what that's going to be. In the meantime, enjoy the meme above and the dope TNGHT mix below. I can't look at that sh*t without cracking up. Never gets old! Although TNGHT, which consists of Hudson Mohawke and Lunice, generally does high energy trap, this mix takes some time to grow on you. Upon multiple listens, I've found that it starts off with a post-chopped&screwed type sound and escalates into straight slaps. Peace and Clom!

A pretty cool track and collaboration. Ab-soul is definitely up there when it comes to up 'n coming artists right now in hip-hop and Fashawn most definitely has the potential. His 2009 album Boy Meets World  remains in heavy rotation, but I don't know that he's matched that level of quality since then. Hope to see some more music from him soon. Anyway, this songs solid definitely worth a peep!

Another dope Drumma Boy produced track this time with Wiz and 2 Chainz. Man, it is crazy how 2 Chainz has become everyone's go to feature guy nowadays. I mean I enjoy his verses, but it seems real random to me. I know a few of my friends reallyyy hate 2 Chainz, but I personally wouldn't go that far. I'll just say it is strange. Anyways, Wiz flows on this one, which is always nice to hear and I actually really like that chorus.

Big Boi, always the master of hard hittin hip-hop funk, comes through with a new southern slapper with some legends (KRIT is already a legend as far as I'm concerned). Big Boi's album, Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumors, is out November 13th.

Mac Miller has been doing soo many collabos and I am not hating one bit! I can't lie, I was definitely a hater of Mac at the start, but as I read up on him in Forbes and around the web I realized that I really respected his grind. With that new found respect, I gave his most recent mixtape, Macadelic, a spin and pleasantly surprised would be an understatement of how I felt about it. Lyrically, he has come lightyears from where he started and his embrace of all types of production and collaborations is admirable. On this one, Mac goes with his raspy flow, Drumma Boy provides some real smooth production and Big Sean, although very up and down for me in general, kills his verse.  He does have the wordplay down and I will always give that to him. Anyhoo, enjoi!

Floats My Boat by AER

Last summer, AER's mixtape The Reach was in super heavy rotation. Since then, they released an EP on iTunes that in my opinion was not quite as good as that tape. However, they're back this summer with some great sunny music and some visuals to go with it. These dudes are super talented the way they seamlessly rap/sing fusing lots of sounds from hip-hop to ska/reggae to alternative. Definitely a poolside/beachfront anthem.

Intermission (prod. by Flosstradamus) by Calez

Flosstradamus and hip-hop were a match made in heaven. His trap style dubstep/electro productions sound like they are meant to have someone on 'em and Calez does a great job over this. The up 'n coming artist out of Chicago is definitely worth checking out. His free album, Kids With Raps, can be downloaded HERE. Shouts to Trippy Adrian on the find.

This is a knockk! Kanye autotunin it up a bit and pulls it off wonderfully as usual and the way the beat drops when Rick Ross comes in is legendary. Hit Boy kills this production. Can someone please inform me what exactly it is that DJ Khaled does on these songs?

"National Anthem" Trailer ft. ASAP Rocky by Lana Del Rey

Updated with the full visuals. Funny idea to release a trailer the night before a video drops. ASAP starring as JFK and Lana as Jackie/Marilyn. First observation: It looks like half the video was shot in Instagram! (which could be seen as both a good and bad thing). Second thought: I hope Rocky will eventually give us some bars as ASAP Kennedy.

I am really interested to hear and read what people think of this around the web. I have a feeling the opinions are going to be pretty polarized although I don't think I am ready to give a full verdict.

One Up-Childish Gambino

I am super excited for this upcoming 4th of July for many reasons--one of which is Childish Gambino's upcoming mixtape, Royalty. I may have said this before, but not sure if I've ever talked about it on VLVR: I think that on Camp , his debut album(which I loved), Gambino was channeling feelings from a younger, more immature self that had to be expressed. Now, he's on his grown up sh*t and he's transitioning really nicely. He's starting to open up with some dope collabs (Nipsey Hu$$le and Beck were my favorites) and completely changing the way he uses his voice. I think his music reflects both his expressive abilities as an actor as well as his talents in storytelling, comedy and writing. Anyways that was way too long of an intro. PS Apparently that first verse is Steve G Lover III (Gambino's brother?!?).

Power Circle ft. Kendrick Lamar by Mayback Music Group

The opening track to MMG's Self Made 2, which you can cop on iTunes, gets some visual treatment. At this point, I skip to Kendrick's verse in any song he's in. For this one, I went back and listened to the whole thing just to confirm Kendrick murdered everyone. Just another day in the studio for Black Hippy's lead man. Dr. Dre makes a cameo in the video, too. Happy to see Kendrick can get him back out in the spotlight a bit.

This is a helluva lineup for a song. I could see some fans lookin down at this like Wiz is too poppy and Fitty is past his prime. F*&#K that sh*t, though because these are two legends of different generations coming together to make something that sounds awesome. Love this. Get Rich or Die Tryin' and Kush & OJ (and Taylor Allderdice) are classics as far as I am concerned. Can't hate on legends gettin together. CloM! Oh, and by the way Harry Fraud is the truth. Watch out world.
